Frequently Asked Questions (and Answers)

Here are some answers to frequently asked questions (FAQs) regarding the Loudoun South Little League program. If you have questions you would like to see included here, please email us at info@loudounsouthlittleleague.org.

1. Who is eligible to participate in Loudoun South Little League?

Loudoun South Little League offers baseball programs from T-ball through Majors for boys and girls. The following criteria must be met to be eligible to play in Loudoun South Little League:

Age:  LSLL is open to players with a Playing Age of 5 to 12 inclusive. To determine a player's Playing Age, calculate his or her age on April 30, 2010.  Please note that Little League rules state that players of playing age 12 are NOT allowed to pitch in the Minor League Divisions (Triple A and below).  There are no exceptions to this rule.

The chart below

shows which birthdates are eligible for the 2010 playing year.

Residency:  LSLL is open to players living within our boundaries.  Little League sets the criteria for how a player is considered a resident of our boundaries; in general, if either of the player's parents OR a player's court-appointed legal guardian resides within the boundaries.  Little League does allow some exceptions to the residency requirements which are handled on a case-by-case basis.

For eligibility questions, contact the league president at

3. How do I register for Loudoun South Little League?

Loudoun South Little League currently only accepts online registration.  You may register during open registration by visiting our website at www.loudounsouthlittleleague.org and clicking on the registration link.

4. What equipment does the league provide?

The league will provide each team with team hats, team shirts, batting helmets, bats, and catcher's protective gear.  A player is required to provide an athletic cup, baseball glove, baseball cleats, and white baseball pants.  In addition, a player will need to provide their own water bottle and a strap for glasses (glasses must also have non-breakable lenses).

5. Where will practices and games be held?

All of our games and practices will be scheduled at Loudoun South fields (in the boundary areas of South Riding, Stone Ridge, Brambleton, Lenah Run, and Aldie). Currently those fields include Hutchison Farm, Little River, and Pinebrook Elementary Schools, Mercer Middle School, and Stone Ridge Community Fields. The availability of these fields is subject to the discretion of Loudoun Parks and Recreation.

6. When will practices be held?

Practices will begin the first week of April or as soon as the fields are released by the county.

7. How often will practices be held?

Practices will be held twice a week (one weeknight and one Saturday) before games begin, then once a week after the season starts with two games during the week (one weeknight and one Saturday).  T-ball practices will be held twice a week (one weeknight and one Saturday) before the games begin and then there will be two games a week (one weeknight and one Saturday).

8. Will we be able to pick our practice night?

Practices will be limited to the number of fields accessible by the league. The league scheduler will determine the practice night(s) for each team. The League Scheduler will attempt to accommodate the requests of the coaches for a specific day for practices if possible.

9. Can we request a specific coach or teammate during registration?

The league will do its best to accommodate requests in the lower divisions (T-ball – A), although we cannot make any guarantees that requests will be granted. In the upper divisions (AA – Majors), player evaluations and drafts will determine team placement, so requests will not be able to be accommodated.

10. Do we need to provde a copy of the player's birth certificate?

Loudoun South Little League does require all players to provide copies of birth certificates to verify eligibility to play in the league. A copy of the birth certificate will be requested to be provided to the player's manager at the first practice or parent's meeting. The league will keep all copies of birth certificates on hand until the player reaches age 12, at which time the documents will be destroyed.

11. How are players assigned to teams and divisions?

All players are assigned to an appropriate division by the LSLL Player Agents based on:

  1. Participant's Playing Age (age as of April 30, of the current playing year)

  2. Previous Little League experience (number of seasons played and previous divisions)

  3. Coach/Manager evaluations from any previous season

  4. Number of players/teams at each level that can be accommodated by available fields

  5. Overall benefit to league (e.g., competitive balance, scheduling, etc)

  6. Tryout results

  7. Draft results (for the AA, AAA and Majors divisions; players wishing to play at the next highest division based on their Playing Age who are not drafted will play at the division for their age group)

12. Who needs to tryout for the spring season?

All players that are playing age 7 and above  (as of April 30, of the current playing year) will have the opportunity to attend the tryouts during the month of February. The league will contact the eligible players via email with information on tryouts as that time approaches.

13. What is LSLL's waitlist policy?

Players who sign up late (i.e., after registration closes) will be placed on the waitlist. You will not be charged for registration unless an opening becomes available to the player. Players on the waitlist will be placed on teams on a first come first served basis upon availability.

14. What qualifications do I need to become a manager?

Applicants should list any past playing and coaching experience in youth sports, not limited to baseball. LSLL will be holding coaching clinics prior to the spring season for those that do not have any coaching experience or to those that want to continue learning better coaching techniques. Applicants will be selected based on the above qualifications by player agents. Please note that all applicants will go through a background check per Little League Baseball rules.
