SPRINTERS SHINE AT GAHR!!!
BOYS LEAD THE STATE IN 400 RELAY
Under sunny skies, the Gahr Relays may have dragged on and on, but you can't blame the Grizzlies sprint crew, as they sent a message not only to Baseline League foes, but traditional powers throughout the state of California. Both varsity 400 relays won in convincing fashion with no one close. The girls ran the #2 time in school history winning with a fine mark of 48.59. Not to be outdone, the boys team opened the season with a mark most teams dream of ending the season with...a 42.13!!! It was the fastest mark run in the state on Saturday as invitationals kicked off all over California. It was also a mark that would have given the Grizzlies a seventh place finish in last year's state finals. The team would return to win the 4x200 with a very solid mark as well.
Craig Merkley had a great day in the throws with the top marks for the day in both the shot put and discus. His discus toss of 152-3 was the second best mark in school history. Michelle Anumba had a fine day, but the girls shot put results were not posted. Not needing to see the results, I'm sure her mark led the field by a wide margin!
The team travels to Azuza Pacific University for the Cougar Classic this Saturday, look for info soon on the website.

BOYS WIN COUGAR CLASSIC!!!
BOTH GIRLS LEVELS FINISH SECOND
The Grizzlies made the trip to Azuza Pacific University on Saturday and under overcast skies the team rose to the challenge and performed very well. The team battled OC power Trabuco Hills all day long as each school won the team title in different genders. The boys came up with the championship with a balanced attack while both girls varsity and frosh/soph finished second to Trabuco Hills. It was a good chance to establish quality marks as it is clear that this '09 team is destined to rewrite the school's "Top 5" lists!

THROWERS THRIVE IN SAN DIEGO!!!
BRAVO AND HAWKINS STAR AT MT. SAC
While the sprinters did well at the Mt. Carmel Invitational, it was the throwing tandem of Michelle Anumba and Craig Merkley leading the way for the Grizzlies. It was another all-around stellar performance for Anumba, who was named Female Athlete of the Meet. What earned her that honor? How many 45 foot shot putters can run a top 10 time in the state in the 100 hurdles and anchor the 400 relay for the win? That's exactly what Michelle did, cementing her hold on the #2 mark in the state in the shot put at 45-0. Her 15.37 in the 100 hurdles gives her the school record and, while it won't hold up through the weekend, it was a top 10 mark in the entire state!
As for Merkley, he seems to improve by feet not inches! Adding 9 feet to his personal record in the discus to 159-3, which gave him the win, he is closing in on Nick McGrail's school record of over 164 feet. Maybe more surprising is his progress in the shot put, where he added another 3 feet to grab the number 2 mark in school history at 51-6.5, just 1.5 inches off Ryan Griffith's school record. Last season he never threw over 43 feet.
Karl Palmer led the 400 relay to a tenth second improvement on their state leading mark and then reached a rare milestone, breaking 22 seconds and the school record in the 200 meters. It may have been costly as he strained his hamstring in the process.
If you love distance running, then Mt. SAC was the place for you! How do I know this? Because there were 65 heats of the 1600 meters...that's right, I said 65. Daniel Hawkins improved his FS school record in the 1600, lowering it to 4:34.49, while Lexie Bravo ran only the 4th sub-12:00 3200 meters in school history.
The team hosts Upland on Wednesday at 3:00pm as Baseline League action begins.

GRIZZLIES EARN A SPLIT WITH UPLAND!!!
GIRLS OPEN WITH A WIN, BOYS LOSE
The outcomes were not a huge surprise as things ran to form in the Baseline League opener for the Grizzlies. The boys were outpointed in all events except the relays, the throws and the 400, losing 80-56. On top of that, the Highlanders swept the high jump and used their 3rd place State Meet finishing Cross Country squad to amass a 25-2 advantage in the distance events. While many marks were wiped out by strong tail winds, the only wind legal top 5 mark came from Tommy Cottam in the 800 as he improved over 5 seconds from last season, running a 2:04.16. Pete Adeleke won both hurdle races and Craig Merkley continued throwing well, winning both throw events. Jaylon Mabry won the 400 and ran on both winning relay teams.
The girls ran wild on the track to defeat the Highlanders 86-50. Despite being swept in the pole vault and triple jump, the Lady Grizzlies were easily able to overcome Upland by dominating other events. Michelle Anumba increased her #2 mark in state in the shot put to 45-8.5 and nearly broke the school record in the discus in her first time in the event. She also won the 100 hurdles. Tiara Collins and Destiney Davis recorded personal bests in going 1-2 in the 400. Youngsters Brianna Wilson and Kelly Rhines made up for the injured Ashley Franklin to win the 100 and 200 respectively.
The road for the Grizzlies doesn't get any easier as they host Rancho Cucamonga next Wednesday.

GRIZZLIES BATTLE THE COLD AND THE COUGARS!!!
GIRLS WIN WHILE BOYS SALVAGE A TIE
The wind was blowing and the temperatures were cool as two school records fell at Grizzly Stadium. Rival Rancho Cucamonga made the short trip to do battle and both scores were close. An early DQ in the 400 relay proved costly, but the boys rallied to tie the Cougars 68-68. Craig Merkley continued to improve in the Shot Put and in the process shattered Ryan Griffith's three year old school record, moving the mark to 54-7. Karl Palmer returned to action winning both the 100 and 200, while Jaylan Mabry sat this one out. Pete Adeleke continued to improve in the hurdles, moving into the #2 spot in the 300's. While the deep and talented Cougar distance squad dominated, a rare sweep in the discus made the tie a possibility.
The girls managed to get by the Cougars as Ashley Franklin won both the 100 and 200. The Cougars won 9 of the 16 events, but it wasn't enough as they fell 71.5-63.5. Two events that the Cougars could not win were the shot put and discus. Michelle Anumba prevailed in the shot and in only the second time competing in the event, broke the school record in the discus with a throw of 115-6.
Many of the Grizzlies will compete in the #1 invitational in the nation this weekend...the Arcadia Invitational. Then it's back to work at home against Claremont on Wednesday.

ANUMBA DERAILED AT ARCADIA!!!
It was beginning to look like a foregone conclusion that one of the most diverse athletes in California would march through the post-season and end up at the State Meet Finals. How smooth that road will be may depend on how serious her knee injury is. She injured it during hurdle warm-ups and it bothered her enough that she did not compete in the shot put competition. That, along with some "no heights" in other field events left some mixed results at Arcadia.
While it is the most prestigious invitational in the state, it is just an invitational that has no bearing on the rest of the season. The Grizzlies sent their largest contingent ever to the two-day meet and while the time may not have reflected it, the boys 400 relay shined by finishing 4th in the loaded invitational heat that featured the best from California, Nevada and New York.

GRIZZLIES HANDLE THE WOLFPACK!!!
On another cold and windy Wednesday, the Grizzlies hosted the Claremont Wolfpack at Grizzly Stadium. The boys got off to a rough start with a botched handoff in the 400 relay, but midway through the meet they turned it around with a sweep of the 100, a sweep of the Long Jump and a rare point advantage in the 800. They earned a 27 point victory.
The girls were missing several key athletes and needed to overcome an automatic 4 victory performance by Claremont's Kori Carter. With a 31-5 advantage in the mid and long distance events, the ladies picked up a 22 point win.
The win leads to a showdown next Wednesday with Etiwanda for the league title. The boys can earn a tie for second if they can win out.

3RD IN STATE...2ND IN LEAGUE!!!
The boys 400 Relay team made great strides towards the post-season on Saturday at the Mt. SAC Relays. Finally having everyone healthy and managing to get the baton around the track, Oje Imoohi, Jaylan Mabry, Karl Palmer and Lance Brown shattered their own school record with a time of 41.69. Running in the invitational heat, they ran the 3rd fastest mark in the state of California this season. Unfortunately, they finished 2nd in the race...2nd to Rancho Cucamonga! The Baseline League has the speed this year with the #2 and #3 marks in the state. There appears to be many more battles to come.

LEAGUE SHOWDOWN GOES TO THE EAGLES!!!
BOYS WIN AGAIN
The Lady Grizzlies came into this showdown for the league title needing some breaks to go their way for them to have a shot at their championship. They got the early break in the 400 Relay, but Etiwanda made no miscues after and easily defeated the Grizzlies by 22. Michelle Anumba threw with one leg but did not run and the distance crew was dominated 23-4, neither of which helped the cause. A bright spot? Amauche Ihenacho had a superb day, winning both jumps and placing in both hurdle races.
The boys team scored an easy 53 point win as the Eagles struggled to match the depth of the Grizzlies. Depending on the outcome of today's Rancho/Upland meet, the boys could finish in second place in the Baseline League.
The team hits the road for the first time in the season finale next Wednesday at Alta Loma.

GRIZZLIES CLOSE OUT SEASON WITH WINS!!!
The team traveled to Alta Loma High School on Wednesday and got a taste of what most teams in Southern California deal with at most all their meets...a dirt track. It did not affect the Grizzlies as they were able to move some athletes around and still beat the Braves. Dylan Beavers matched his school record of 14-6 in the pole vault, while Craig Merkley won both throws to lead the boys to a second place tie in league. Meanwhile the girls finished alone in second place. Both teams accomplished a great deal this season in a very tough league. Now it's time to prepare for the post-season! Baseline League Prelims for most field events will be on Monday, while some running and field event prelims will be contested on Tuesday, all at Claremont HS. League Finals will also be at Claremont on Friday.

1ST DAY OF PRELIMS GOES WELL FOR THE GRIZZLIES!!!
Baseline League Prelims kicked off on Monday with many of the field events narrowing the competitors to a managable 9 for Friday's League Finals. The Grizzlies are well-represented as many are peaking at the right time of the year.
Prelims continue on Tuesday at 3:00 at Claremont HS. All running events will be contested except relays and the 3200, they are finals on Friday. In the field events, both high jumps will narrow the field to 9, while the first final of 2009 will be contested in the boys pole vault. An impressive event for the Baseline League as 12 vaulters have cleared 13, including 3 Grizzlies.

The Baseline League Prelims continued on Tuesday with many Grizzlies working their way into Friday's finals. The first final also took place as Dylan Beavers defended his league title with a 14-0 vault. The much improved Anthony Cheeks also qualified for CIF as he cleared 13-0 to grab the 3rd and final spot. Congratulations also to freshman Tamia Hasan for shattering the school record in the 300 Hurdles by over a full second, running 46.33.
Baseline League Finals will be held at Claremont High School on Friday at 3:00.

YEAR 7 = 7 LEAGUE TITLES!!!
THROWERS SWEEP TO LEAD THE WAY
The Grizzlies made their best showing in our short school history in the always challenging Baseline League Finals, despite ending the evening on a sour note. The spotlight belonged to the throwers who grabbed half of the CIF spots and hoarded all of the league championships. Michelle Anumba, banned from the track with a torn ACL, managed to best the field in both the shot put and the discus with standing throws only. It remains to see how much improvement she can make in the coming weeks. Craig Merkley won the shot put and broke the school record in the discus to earn two league titles while newcomer Nick Martin finished second in both. Jaylan Mabry ran to a school record in winning the 400 meters and also ran on the winning 400 meter relay team with Oje Imoohi, Karl Palmer, and Lance Brown.
The sour note came after the boys won the 1600 meter relay only to be disqualified after one team member removed his jersey on the infield as the race was being run. This rule violation cost the team their 8th league title of the day.
CIF Prelims will be held next Saturday at Trabuco Hills HS in Orange County.

SUCCESS IN THE SUN AT CIF PRELIMS!!!
Holding the meet in Orange County is designed to spare the athletes from what can be a hot time of year in the Inland Empire. It did not work this time. Hot temps followed everyone there as summer arrived early. The Grizzlies qualified nearly half of all their entries through to CIF Finals next Saturday, easily the largest contingent in school history. Athletes in 8 events advanced out of the most competitive division in CIF, if not the nation. While there were disappointments for the Grizzlies, there were no surprises in who didn't make it or who did. Everyone who was seeded in the top nine advanced and no one who was seeded lower advanced. Rarely do things follow the script so well.
The meet began well with Michelle Anumba unleashing a standing throw over 41 feet in the shot put and Craig Merkley throwing over 165 in the discus with both athletes advancing. Craig would hang on by a narrow margin to advance in the shot put as the ninth and final qualifier. On the track, the girls 400 relay of one junior and three freshmen equaled the school record of 48.59, but finished 11th to barely miss out. The boys 400 relay advanced as expected. Karl Palmer assisted that relay team, then helped himself to run a personal wind-legal best of 10.83 to advance in the 100 meters. Dylan Beavers was a top qualifier in the pole vault as he equaled his best of 14-6, where competition was stopped as they had their nine qualifiers. The girls 1600 relay came close to matching last week's school record effort as they posted another 3:56 to win their heat and advance. The performance of the day? Hands down that belonged to Jaylan Mabry and the 400 meters. Solid improvement in that event is measured in tenths of a second, but Jaylan skipped the 48's and lowered his school record from 49.22 to 47.95...an incredible jump! That mark earned him the second best mark of the day and a great lane next week.
CIF Finals will be held on Saturday, May 23rd at Cerritos College. The facility opens at 9:15am with girls pole vault beginning at 10:30am, other field events at 11:00am and running events at 1:00pm. Boys discus and girls shot put will start at 11:00 (with boys pole vault and boys shot put following the girls) and the running event schedule is as follows, but is only estimated...if the meet is running early, it will continue to run early. Boys 400 relay at 1:15, boys 400 at 3:10, boys 100 at 3:35 and girls 1600 relay at 6:05.

THREE MOVE ON TO MASTERS!!!
Women from girls, men from boys...that's what CIF Finals separates. The best nine from all four divisions gather together to battle for a total of 9 spots in lane races and 12 in other running events and field events. Win your heat and you are in? Not at CIF Finals! You are guaranteed nothing...you must perform on this day to move on...times/marks are all that matters. The meet that determines CIF champions for teams and individuals, with an individual CIF title no guarantee to move on.
With a lot at stake, the Grizzlies were represented in eight events, with three of those successfully navigating their way into next Friday night's Masters Meet back at Cerritos College. That meet will determine who makes the trip to Clovis for the state meet. Team results? The Grizzlies had both teams finish in the top 20 in Division 1. Individually, things got off to a rough start as the boys 400 relay could not get the baton around the track safely and thus their season comes to an end. Jaylan Mabry, with a monster effort PR last week, could not duplicate it this week. Karl Palmer's wind-aided 10.72 was not enough to move on in the 100 meters. Dylan Beavers cleared the height needed to advance (14-3), but so did too many others and he was eliminated on misses. Craig Merkley, competing in both the shot put and the discus, figured the discus to be his best opportunity, so of course he made it in the shot put. His throw of 54-7.5 bettered his school record and earns him a trip to Masters. Michelle Anumba, no stranger to the post-season, also advanced with the fifth best mark of the day. The girls 1600 relay stole the show with a nearly 5 second improvement to do just enough to advance, shattering the school record in the process. Congratulations to all those who advanced and to those that didn't on a fine season.
Complete Results: B400: 8. Jaylan Mabry - 50.51; B100: 5. Karl Palmer - 10.72w; G1600Relay: 5. 3:51.26 (Collins, Hasan, Rhines, Franklin) (NEW SCHOOL RECORD & Masters Qualifier); BPV: 6. UNDERCLASSMEN OFF TO CLOVIS!!!
1600 RELAY QUALIFIES FOR STATE
The heat was turned up in the post-season as the Grizzlies brought competitors in three events to the Southern Section's Masters Meet, held Friday night at Cerritos College. Recognizing the strength of the Southern Section a few years back, the state came up with qualifying standards as a way to get into the State Meet...but they had to be posted at Masters, which means you had to get there first. This made CIF Finals often the tougher order of business. The old qualifying method is still there...top 5 at Masters advance regardless of time, but so do other finishers that meet the standard. This means that in rare instances, if the section is particularly deep in an event, all 9 or 12 competitors could advance. The girls 1600 relay is one such deep event, and that is exactly what happened...all nine relay teams advanced as they were all below the 3:54 standard. This is great news for the Grizzlies! The team of Kelly Rhines, Tamia Hasan, Tiara Collins and Ashley Franklin became the first "track" athletes in school history to make the state meet (only field event competitors prior), Rhines and Hasan are the first freshmen to advance to the state meet and they lowered their school record in the process...by 4 100ths of a second! The girls finished 7th in 3:51.22.
Craig Merkley, a surprise qualifier in the shot put, increased his school record as well, throwing 55-2.25, finishing 10th, just 2.25 inches out of 6th. Congratulations to Craig on a great season, one in which he dedicated himself and worked tremendously hard. To put his efforts in perspective, Craig's best last season was 41-5 and he didn't even qualify for League Finals. To improve nearly 14 feet in the shot put, to win the league title and to advance to Masters is nothing short of remarkable. Best of luck to him at UC Santa Barbara next year.
It was not a great evening for Michelle Anumba, but what a great high school career! With a torn ACL, she still managed to make it to the Masters Meet, but had surgery and scratched from the shot put. In my 24 years of coaching track, I have not seen a more complete athlete, and certainly not one as pleasant as Michelle. Good things happen to good people who work hard and Duke University will be getting one of the best. She leaves us holding 5 school records, and I'd be willing to bet no other school has someone holding the same 5 records...200, 100 hurdles, 400 relay, shot put and discus! While she was limited this season to mostly the throws, it gave our talented youngsters the chance to gain valuable experience for the seasons to come. We wish Michelle the best at Duke.
The girls 1600 relay advances to the State Meet, which will be held at Buchanon HS in Clovis, a suburb of Fresno. The qualifying rounds will be held on Friday, with the finals on Saturday.

RELAY RUN ENDS AT STATE PRELIMS!!!
Congratulations to our girls 1600 meter relay team of Ashley Franklin, Tiara Collins, Tamia Hasan and Kelly Rhines. They made the trip to Clovis for the state track and field championships, finishing 3rd in their heat, but it wasn't enough to advance. The four underclassmen made an incredible run, lowering the school record each week, but their 3:57, 6 seconds off their Masters time, did not make it into the top 9 for Saturday's finals. Great season for these young ladies, LOHS is very proud of you!
