SPRINTERS SHINE AT SKYLINE!!!

The Grizzlies split their squad on the first weekend of competition as primarily sprinters and throwers headed north to Oakland to compete in the Skyline Invitational.  The Lady Grizzlies took the team title while the boys were a half of a point from the championship.  It was a great way to kick off the 2008 season as many Grizzlies posted "Top 5" marks in school history, with one school record falling as well.  Congratulations to Jaylan Mabry for his 400 time of 51.17, which not only won the event, but the sophomore broke the school record by over a second in the process.  Sophomore Ashley Franklin had a big day winning both the 100 and 200, while contributing to a pair of second place relays.

TEAM SPLITS AT CARTER!

Anumba Shatters Shot Put Record

The team travelled to Carter HS in Rialto for it's only non-league dual meet of the season.  With typical first meet management issues, the team performed well against the Lions.  Michelle Anumba provided the highlight of the day as she broke the 40 foot barrier in the Shot Put with a toss of 41 feet, 1 inch!  That mark would have given her a 2nd place at CIF Finals last year and an 8th place finish at the State Finals.  Freshman Margaret Wilmot-Francis made a fine debut winning three events, as did veteran Brett Valencia on the boys side.

The girls won their meet easily by a score of 90-41, while the boys couldn't hold off the Lions in the field, losing 69-65.

VALENCIA LEADS PARADE OF P.R.'S!!!

Boys 1600 School Record Falls

On an unseasonably warm day in Covina, the distance squad visited Azuza Pacific University for the Meet of Champions Distance Carnival.  A great venue and a well-organized meet of seeded heats that usually yields some fine performances didn't disappoint again in 2008.  Brett Valencia, one of the most improved distance runners in California, proved he belonged in the Invitational heat of 16 in the 1600, finishing 6th with a 4:19.47.  Not only did it break Scott Harris' school record, but that was the 8th fastest time in the state of California up to this point!  The boys outshined the ladies as 10 of the 11 marks were personal records.  Congratulations to Thomas Cottam as he broke into the LOHS Top 5 in the 1600 and welcome back to '07 CIF Qualifier Ethan Krizman as he ran a strong but understandably cautious first race of the year.

GRIZZLIES NEARLY PULL OFF THE SWEEP AS BASELINE LEAGUE ACTION BEGINS!!!

Boys Sweep While the Girls Split

It was a long afternoon (and early evening), but a rare league tri-meet allowed the team to conserve races down the stretch.  Alta Loma and Etiwanda visited Grizzly Stadium on Wednesday and the boys were never threatened as they defeated both teams by comfortable margins.  Multi-event winners included sophomore Dylan Gruett in both hurdles, Jaylan Mabry in the 200 and 400 and Brett Valencia in the 800 and 1600.  One school record fell as the improved pole vault duo of Dylan Beavers and Mike Stratford both soared to 13-0.

The girls handled Alta Loma without a problem, but it was tight the entire day with Etiwanda.  In the end the Eagles prevailed by two points.  The 400 Relay school record fell as the Grizzlies picked up some key points early with the upset.  Multiple event winners included Ashley Franklin in the 100 and 200, the latter breaking her own school record, and Michelle Anumba in the Shot Put and 300 Hurdles.

LONG WEEKEND AT TRABUCO HILLS!!!

The Trabuco Hills Invitational attracts quality competition and it has been the site of CIF Prelims the last few years, but patience was tested this year as the meet introduced Friday night competition and then ran long on Saturday.  Some good performances were turned in as the sprinters and field event crews sent their best to compete.  Jaylon Mabry highlighted the action as he lowered his school record in the 400 Meters.  Jaylon also led the boys 1600 Relay to an improvement on their school record (with Karl Palmer, Roman Scott and Osamoje Imoohi).  Michelle Anumba took 2nd overall in a loaded Shot Put field.

SPRINT RELAY SIZZLES AT ARCADIA!!!

Lady Grizzlies Blow Away School Record...Twice!

A large crowd, blistering heat and an extremely long day didn't deter the girls 400 relay team from achieving something incredible on Saturday.  With the new "qualifying" format in place this year, teams in the open portion of some events had the opportunity to "run" their way into the night meet.  Running a huge personal and school record of 48.60 in the early morning, Ashley Franklin, Jackie Jackson, Destiny Davis and Michelle Anumba qualified into the "seeded" heat of the night meet grabbing the 8th out of 9 spots.  Then came the long day!  Unseasonably hot temps baked the venue until, with half the team running an hour earlier in the 1600 Meter Relay, they returned to the track.  Mixing up the order, Coach Robinson was pleased they made it, but didn't expect what he would see in the race!  Seeded 8th, the girls finished 4th in another school record and league-leading time of 48.20, edging league rival Rancho Cucamonga in the process.  Great job girls!!!

Other highlights included a pair of 10's for Michelle Anumba and Brett Valencia in the Shot Put and Mile respectively.  Neither matching their best efforts this season in the heat, they each finished in 10th place, Michelle with a mark of 39-2.5 and Brett with a time of 4:25.20.  The girls 1600 relay survived a knockdown to finish at 4:08.87.  Ashley Franklin ran well into a headwind in the 100;  her time was 12.83, while the boys 400 relay's handoffs didn't click, resulting in a time of 45.37.

The regular season is quickly closing!  The team travels to Upland on Wednesday for a Baseline League contest.

A long day in many ways for the Grizzlies on Wednesday.  The starter was late, the meet ran very long and the Highlanders unleashed their depth to defeat the Grizzlies on both sides.  While neither the boys or the girls were able to come up with a win, there were some fine performances throughout the day, including four school records broken.  On the girls side, one of the most versatile athletes in the Baseline League, Michelle Anumba, won the Shot Put.  That's not news, but she also set a new school record in the 200 meters, running 25.38. On the boys side, Mike Stratford broke free in the pole vault with a school record of 13-1, good only for 3rd place in the meet!  Jaylan Mabry continued to shine this season lowering his 400 record again and setting a new 200 meter record at 22.04.  While he didn't collect any school records, Brett Valencia swept all three distance events against a very strong Upland squad.

2 SCHOOL RECORDS FALL AT RANCHO VERDE!!!

Mabry shines at Frosh-Soph level

The 2008 Grizzlies T&F team continued to rewrite the "Top 5" lists at the Inland Empire Championships on Saturday at Rancho Verde HS.  As the Inland Empire continues to add populations and additional high schools, the quality of track programs also improves.  With the powerful Southwestern League (Great Oak, Vista Murrieta and Murrieta Valley) unleashing their full force, this meet has continued to improve in quality.

Jaylon Mabry ran at the Frosh-Soph level and excelled with two firsts and a second in his three individual events.  Michelle Anumba threw her way into the "top 5" in the state of California by improving her shot put mark to 42-6.5, obviously improving her school record in the process. The boys 400 record also fell...twice!  A battle has developed for bragging rights as Jaylon Mabry, who has been consistently lowering the record all season, now has competition from fellow sprinter Karl Palmer.  On Saturday, Mabry broke his own school record, but moments later, Palmer ran 50.36 to take it away by 3 one-hundredths of a second.  Stay tuned as they continue to battle in the coming weeks.

GRIZZLIES FALL TO THE COUGARS!!!

Rancho Cucamonga has been consistently good for some time and yesterday's results show that there is more work to be done for the Grizzlies to challenge.  The boys team is on their way to a league title and were not about to let up as they defeated the Grizzlies 93-43, while their girls had already suffered a defeat at the hands of Claremont and are out of the league title hunt.  Neither girls team "loaded up" as much as they could have, as another meet looms ahead on Thursday, but the Cougars had enough to secure a 76-60 victory.  Highlights included Brett Valencia winning two distance events against strong Rancho runners, Craig Merckly winning both throwing events, Dylan Beavers getting the upper hand on the school record in the pole vault (13-6)...and defeating the Baseline League's resident big dog in that event, Nico Phillips.  Race of the day belonged to freshman Margaret Wilmot-Francis, who outkicked the league's cross country champion to win the 1600 in the #3 time in school history.

YEAR 6 = 6 LEAGUE TITLES!!!

Best showing at the Baseline League Finals ever!

As a young school, Los Osos doesn't have much in the way of history, but they made history Friday night as they secured six league titles, more than in all previous years COMBINED!!!  Leading the way was senior Brett Valencia, who breezed to victory in the 1600 meters, but needed every meter in the 800 to hold off the Rancho duo.  Sophomore Dylan Beavers shocked the established veterans to win the pole vault as he has progressed nicely this season, improving 3 1/2 feet to better his school record to 14-6.  Freshman Margaret Wilmot-Francis put the hammer down by blazing a 65 first lap and dared the competition to catch her...they didn't as she lowered her #2 mark all-time, just missing the school record by .11 seconds.  Michelle Anumba remained undefeated throughout the dual meets and easily won the shot put competition.  In an exciting finale, the boys 1600 meter relay of OJ Imoohi, Karl Palmer, Roman Scott and Jaylon Mabry upended the Baseline League to win in record time, lowering the school mark by 6 seconds.

GRIZZLIES SEND 5 TO FINALS!!!

Best Prelims in School History

Not everyone went home happy on Saturday, but more than ever have before.  CIF Division 1 Prelims can be a eye-opening experience as it is probably the most competitive meet of it's kind in the state.  It can also be a humbling experience, a meet where you find out if you really are good and only those who have great days advance to CIF Finals.  The day began well as the girls 400 Relay chased the Jackrabbits of Long Beach Poly around the track to finish 2nd in their heat and advance to finals.  Their time was a full half-second faster than their previous best...running well when you need to!  About the same time, Dylan Beavers was facing a 13 foot opening height...designed to weed out half the field, and it did just that...but Dylan managed and cleared 14-0 to advance.  These were followed by an early dropped baton in the boys 400 Relay and a disappointing race for Brett Valencia in the 1600.  That is the story of Division 1 Prelims, a mix of triumphs and disappointments.  There were other triumphs as Karl Palmer, not projected to advance in the 100, had the 5th fastest time of the day;  Jaylan Mabry lowered enough time off his 400 meters to make it through;  Michelle Anumba, as much as a sure thing as we have, needed her final throw to advance.  Some, like Ashley Franklin in the 200 and Margaret Wilmot-Francis, ran their best times of the year only to be swallowed up by the beast that is D1, while others like Lexie Bravo in the 3200 and the boys 1600 Relay, couldn't quite capture the magic they orchestrated at League Finals.  All in all, a solid day for the Grizzlies as they qualified the most athletes in school history, and a great learning experience as they did battle with only one senior in the bunch.

CIF Finals will be held at Mt. SAC on Saturday, May 17th with pole vault at 10:00, other field events at 11:00 and running events at 1:00.

Complete Results (top nine per event advance):

ANUMBA AND RELAY MOVE ON TO MASTERS!!!

The big stage can be very intimidating.  Some of the finest athletes in Southern California were unable to handle it on Saturday, while others found out that they careered just to get there, and still others dig down and find a little more.  CIF Finals brings together the best to crown champions, yet it's just another qualifier for the State Championships.  The Grizzlies experienced a mixed bag of success at Mt. SAC on Saturday with blazing heat challenging the athletes as much as the competition.  Michelle Anumba missed a CIF title by just four inches, finishing not only 2nd in Division 1, but 2nd overall on the day.  The girls 400 relay continued to improve, dropping more time to qualify 6th overall.

The Masters Meet is held at Cerritos College on Friday night, with the girls 400 relay running at 6:00pm and Michelle throwing after the boys are finished...they begin at 4:30pm.  Cost is $8 for adults and $5 for everyone else.  The Masters Meet is also known as the state qualifying meet...top 5 advance as does anyone who meets the at-large standards (in this case 47.57 for the relay and 40-11.25 in the shot put...must post the mark at this meet, no previous meets).

ANUMBA THROWS HER WAY TO STATE!!!

Relay just misses the trip!

Michelle Anumba became just the second Grizzly to punch their ticket to the State Championships as she qualified 2nd in the Shot Put at Friday night's Masters Meet.  With a great series of throws, all over 40 feet, her best mark of 42-8 was more than enough to put her into next weekend's state meet.  That mark betters her school record.

The news was not so good for the girls 400 relay, as they ran a very strong race, but came up short in both ways to qualify.  The top 5 finishers are guaranteed entry in the state meet, but anyone who doesn't make the top 5 can still gain entry by beating the qualifying standard (at the Masters Meet only).  The girls finished 6th overall in a time of 47.63, missing Rio Mesa by just 8 one-hundredths of a second.  Unfortunately the qualifying mark in that event is 47.57.  It was a great run for the girls in the post-season and they have a lot to be proud of.

The State Meet is a two day affair with qualifying on Friday and finals on Saturday.  Michelle will compete at 5:30 on Friday with the top 9 advancing to finals, which would be at 5:00 on Saturday.  The meet will be held at Cerritos College and cost on Friday is $10 for adults and $7 for everyone else, and on Saturday $12 and $8 respectively.  Best of luck to her!

ANUMBA...STATE MEDALIST!!!

What a great weekend for a great young lady!!!  One of the most versatile athletes in the sport, Michelle Anumba finally got the chance to focus on just one event, and she made the most of it.  Looking at best marks in the state, Michelle was seeded #8 coming into the weekend.  On the verge of not making it to finals, she lofted a personal record 42-9.25 on her final throw on Friday to make it to Saturday.  She then maintained that consistency and threw again in the 42's (42-6.25) to finish 2nd in the STATE OF CALIFORNIA.  She becomes the first Los Osos athlete in any sport to medal in a state competition and even grabbed a little TV time on Fox Sports' coverage of the finals on Saturday...although you had to make it to the very end of the coverage...actually past the scheduled end time if you Tivo'd it!  Congratulations on a fantastic season Michelle!
