Grizzlies Set Sail At the Patriot Games
The 2007 season began with unseasonably warm weather and strong gusty winds at Rubidoux High School.  With many making the trip to Oakland, most of our athletes ran in a relay format in the Patriot Games.  Conditions were tough, but the team conducted themselves and competed well.
The Varsity Girls finished tied for 9th with only distance runners competing at that level.  The Frosh-Soph girls finished 3rd overall as we entered most events at that level.  The Varsity Boys finished 16th.

GRIZZLY INVITATIONAL WITH GREAT WEATHER!!!
The meet wasn't perfect, but the weather was for a change!  As with any event of this magnitude, there are going to be glitches, but most were resolved in a timely manner that got the meet started on time and ended about 45 minutes behind schedule (pretty good for track invitational standards!).  Thanks to Coach Robinson for his tireless work in getting the most schools (14) that we have had at the meet.  Thank you to all the parent and athlete volunteers, whose help allowed disaster to be averted on several occasions.  There were also some great marks posted throughout the day.  You can link the overall results in our handout section or on www.dyestatcal.com

STRONG TEAMS CLASH!
Once again the Grizzlies hosted a large three-way meet that included Chino Hills and Martin Luther King.  Each team unloaded three busses to do battle and a strong battle it would be.  The boys were outmatched by Chino Hills, but defeated King for the first time, while the girls were in a close meet, narrowly defeating King but falling to the Huskies.  Many Top 5 marks were achieved along with three school records on the girls side.  Freshman Ashley Franklin broke the 100 meter record, Michelle Anumba broke the 300 hurdle record and the 400 relay team of Brittney Manuel, Ashley Franklin, Ashley Davis and Michelle Anumba ran only the second sub-50 second mark in establishing a new school record.
The team has made great strides as last season we were outmatched by both schools.  Congratulations on a job well done.

CLOSE...BUT THE WOLFPACK PREVAIL
Again in 2007 the Grizzlies put up the good fight but fall short to Claremont.  Hats off to the Claremont coaching staff for utilizing their athletes in ways that maximized their points.  Hats off also to the Claremont athletes, especially in the girls field events, where they far exceeded their best efforts this season.
The boys team lost by 12 as Claremont swept the 100, 200 and 110 Hurdles and the Grizzlies didn't get all the points they needed to in the distances.  Emmanuel Jackson had a fantastic day setting a new school record in the Long Jump and bettering his school record in the Triple Jump.  Davarion Kinard set the new Frosh/Soph 400 Meter record and closed the gap on the 300 Hurdle school record.
The girls lost by just 10 points as the Grizzlies handled the Wolfpack in the sprints, but fell short in the 800/1600 and the throws.  Claremont's freshman phenom, Kori Carter, was a one girl wrecking crew, winning four individual events on the day.  Los Osos only won 6 of the 16 events, which usually leads to a much more lopsided score.  The Grizzlies racked up many 2nd and 3rd places to keep it close.  Congratulations to Michelle Anumba for bettering her school record in the 300 Hurdles.

PLENTY OF DISTANCE PR'S AT APU!
A new school record and 5 Top 5 marks highlight day
Circled on every distance runner's calendar, the Meet of Champions came and went as everyone went home with smiles on their faces.  Azusa Pacific University and Arroyo HS hosted the "distance carnival" which provides a unique experience for runners as there are little restrictions on where spectators can be.  Coaches on the track, parents on the infield and heats that are broken up by ability provide an atmosphere for some fine marks.
The day began with Melissa Edwards putting together a gutty effort to break Brianna Bentley's 3200 meter record by 2 seconds, running 11:51.4.  Her record lasted roughly 12 minutes as Lexie Bravo followed her in the next heat.  After shaving 9 seconds off her personal record on Thursday against Claremont, she knocked off another 31 seconds to lower the school record to 11:43.45 and win her heat.
Anna Edwards bettered her #3 mark in the 800 meters with a 2:24.33.  Brett Valencia became only the third Grizzly to break the 4:30 barrier for the 1600 meters, running a huge 5 second PR of 4:28.39.  The night closed with sophomore Ethan Krizman competing in the invitational heat of the F/S 3200 meters and posting the #2 mark in school history, knocking off 21 seconds to run a 9:55.54.

GRIZZLIES SOAR PAST THE EAGLES
Girls Cruise, Boys Meet Comes Down To the 1600 Relay
In the second of five Baseline League meets, the Lady Grizzlies were able to move people around and rest those in need and still defeat Etiwanda.  The Grizzlies lost just three of the sixteen events to win by 41 and even their league record.  Ashley Franklin came up big in the 200 meters, breaking the school record with a 25.74c.  Michelle Anumba continued to improve in just her first year of shot put competition, setting a new school record at 38 feet even.  She doesn't often run them, but Sandra Adarkwa proved she is more than capable, capturing her own school record in the 300 hurdles with a fine time of 49.14c.
The boys found themselves down by 18 points with three events remaining (although the Long Jump had not been scored in the book yet, despite being long over).  The 3200 meters was easily swept and the pole vault came in with a Grizzly sweep as well, tying the meet.  As all good dual meets should, it came down to the 1600 relay...with the Grizzlies winning by less than two seconds!

Distance Relay Kicks Off Arcadia Weekend In Style
The best invitational in the country is held this weekend at Arcadia HS with a number of Grizzlies competing.  The two day event kicks off with relays on Friday night and the 4xMile team ran under the lights to a new school record in the event.  The girls finished 18th out of 30 schools.  Each girl ran a mile (not the 1600 that we are accustomed to today) and they finished in 22:27.68.  Great job ladies!  Here are their approximate splits (subtract 1.6 seconds for your 1600 time):
Melissa Edwards - 5:38, Brianna Bentley - 5:31, Anna Edwards - 5:38, Lexie Bravo - 5:36

TEAMS SPLIT WITH THE BRAVES
The team travelled to Alta Loma on Thursday and the results were not unexpected.  The boys ran into a solid squad and lost by a large margin while the girls handled the Braves while resting some folks scheduled to compete at Mt. SAC.  Details to follow.

Strong Saturday at Arcadia
Brittany Manuel took her 400 meter time back into the 57's for only the second time as she ran well on an overcast day at Arcadia HS.  She also led the 1600 meter relay team to their best time of the year and #2 mark in school history.

UPLAND BRINGS THE HAMMER!
Facing Upland on Thursday, the boys team was overwhelmed by the Highlanders while the girls could not repeat their upset of a year ago.  Good performances in windy conditions, but not enough of them for a victory.  Two school records fell as Michelle Anumba is now approaching elite status in the shot put as she stretched her school record to 39-2.5 feet.  For perspective, that mark is 28th in the entire state of California!  Nick McGrail, looking for a PR since the Grizzly Invitational, launched a very fine 164-3.25 in the discus to improve his school record by 7 feet!  That mark would put Nick in the top 50 in California.

TOUGH DIVISION 1 GETS THE BEST OF THE GRIZZLIES
Anumba advances in the Shot Put
In what is considered the toughest division in all of high school track and field, Division 1 Prelims proved to be a tough meet to get out of.  Only Michelle Anumba accomplished this feat in the shot put.  While some competed well, others didn't have their best day and you can't afford that and still advance to CIF Finals.  Many will be back to give it another go next season.  The team made improvements this season and will look to continue that next year.  Michelle will compete on Saturday at Cerritos College...best of luck to her.

Anumba Medals at CIF Finals
While it wasn't her best effort of the year, Michelle's 37-10.5 throw was good enough for 5th in Division 1.  A great accomplishment and a cap to a great season for the sophomore thrower/sprinter/hurdler.  Such flexibility is rare in track and field and with her still learning the shot put, Michelle has a great future and will lead the Grizzlies in the coming years.
