SIXES LEFT OUT IN THE COLD!!!
Just the kind of weather you expect in late May...cold and windy? Not the conditions that are kind to athletes in events where marks mean something, but you must play the cards that are dealt. The Masters meet is strictly a state meet qualifier, an extra round that only the enormous, or enormously talented, Southern Section has to deal with. 9 competitors in lane races, 12 in all others...top 5 advance automatically, along with anyone who meets a predetermined mark. In some events, only the 5 make it, in five other events, either the entire field advanced or all but one.
While there was success for the Grizzlies, three were denied a ticket to Clovis after finishing 6th in their respective events, one off the auto qualifier. Let's start with a first! For the first time in school history, both boys and girls have qualifiers. Victor Bolden will represent the boys team after finishing 9th in the 300 hurdles. In an event that is deep with talent, last place was comfortably under the qualifying mark. Victor didn't run his best time, which is true of every Grizzly that competed, but he knows he has run faster and he was less than .8 from WINNING the race! Kyle Beck was the clear 6th place finisher, but needed to clear the next height of 15-3 to advance. It was an excellent effort and a fantastic junior season.
On the girls side, the relay led things off with a 3rd place finish, easily advancing. There will be a lot of focus in that event this week as everyone's plate became a little emptier. Kelly Rhines did advance in the 200 meters, but finished out of the money with a 6th place finish in the 100. Brianna Wilson has been remarkable, dropping nearly a second off her 400 time each week, but that is not sustainable. She ran well, but only well enough for 6th place and can now focus on the relay.
Congratulations to all who successfully weathered the elements and I'd put money on warmer conditions in the Fresno area next weekend.
Results: G100: 6. Kelly Rhines - 11.96w; G200: 5. Kelly Rhines - 24.19Q; G400: 6. Brianna Wilson - 56.77; G400R: 3. Los Osos (Rhines, Iriafen, Wilson, Onumonu) - 46.78Q; B300H: 9. Victor Bolden - 38.10Q; BPV: 6. Kyle Beck - 14-9

WILSON WILL BE A LUMBERJACK!!!
That headline may not sound glamorous, but congratulations go out to Brianna Wilson, as she commits to compete for Northern Arizona University. NAU has been a track and cross country powerhouse, located at altitude in the beautiful college town of Flagstaff. Nobody has made the kind of progress that Brianna has made and when you are able to improve that much, the college coaches start to drool. This is a well-deserved honor for both a hard-working young woman and a great family that has been so supportive of her and the program.

4 SCHOOL RECORDS...NOT A BAD CIF FINALS!!!
36 athletes competing in 4 heats of 9 to advance to Masters...mark is everything, place doesn't matter. Many CIF champions will not move on. Top 9 marks advance in lane races, top 12 in everything else. It might be the toughest meet in the nation. Certainly more so than next week's Masters Meet, where 5 of 9 or 12 automatically advance and others can advance with a qualifying mark. Some races next Friday will see all athletes move on to the State Meet. Bottom line...it's very tough to get out of CIF Finals!!!
Mixed results on this Saturday from Mt. SAC, but nothing mixed about the 400 Relay. They came to run and qualified for Masters with the 4th fastest time and a new school record. Their time of 46.58 is the number 3 mark in San Bernardino County history and couldn't have come at a better time. It's assumed that Ifeoma Onumonu ran a leg of the relay, but for her, that was the highlight. Not sure if illness or injury was involved, but the results show a 9th place finish in her heat of the 100 hurdles, not finishing the 300 hurdles and the 1600 relay team did not compete.
Kelly Rhines had a fantastic day coming off the relay record, she extended her school records in both the 100 and 200, running wind-legal marks in both. Her 11.69 in the 100 was good for 3rd in Division 1 and 4th overall and is the 6th best mark in California. It also moves her to 4th in County history. Not satisfied, she came back in the 200 meters and took 3rd in that race to advance. Her time of 24.09 is also 6th best in the state and 5th in County history.
Brianna Wilson continued her hot streak, blasting a 55.76 to finish 2nd in the 400 meters and advance. That lowers her school record...again.
The boys only had two qualifiers and if I am counting those pole vault results correctly, they both moved on to Masters. Kyle Beck cleared 14-9, along with many others, and I believe that qualifies him 11th (don't quote me on that). Victor Bolden became just the 5th athlete in County history to break 38 seconds in the 300 hurdles. His 37.88 was good for 2nd place in Division 1 and moves him on to Masters with a much improved school record in that event.
Superb job everyone and good luck on Friday!

FUTURE DECISIONS MADE!!!
Kelly Rhines and Ifeoma Onumonu have been the cornerstone of our girls program over the last few years and they have made quite an impact on our record books. Our program has been blessed to have not only their athletic abilities, but they have been ambassadors for everything that's right about high school student athletes. Ifeoma signed some time ago to play soccer for the University of California at Berkeley and it remains to be seen if she will pursue track and field (nice to have those options!). Kelly has been torn, but has settled on the University of California at Los Angeles. The Bears and Bruins are very lucky to have such quality young women and we look forward to following their careers!

EXPERIENCE COUNTS AT PRELIMS!!!
WILSON BLASTS SCHOOL RECORD IN 400
There is little room for error in the post-season and some of our younger athletes found out the hard way at Trabuco Hills High School on Saturday. For those who have been there before, it simply was a prelim meet...a stepping stone to bigger meets. The goal is just to make it through, especially in dangerous events such as relays and hurdles.
Kelly Rhines and Ifeoma Onumonu certainly have been here before. They each easily advanced in both of their individual events, helped the short relay to their best time of the year in an easy heat win, and rode the closest and fastest heat in the 1600 Relay to advance in four events each. Brianna Wilson evidently didn't get the "just get through" memo as she hammered out a fantastic 400 meters, lowering her own school record to 56.50, just short of a full 2 seconds below her 2011 best. She also contributed to the relay success. Victor Bolden got a taste of CIF last year and wants to make the best of it this season. He claimed the second school record of the day, lowering his 300 hurdle record, as he took his heat in a tough battle. It was the second fastest mark of the day. Kyle Beck's consistency paid off as he punched his ticket to finals in the pole vault. He will be the only field event athlete moving forward.
You want athletes to run their best each meet and when they do, they expect to be rewarded. There were some close calls on Saturday as only the top nine advance, but none closer than the boys 1600 relay. They ran a great race, setting a new school record by almost a full second...but finished 3/100ths of a second behind that coveted ninth spot. Chris Byers qualified for prelims in four events...as a freshman. He will look back on this day as a lesson learned and experience gained as he not only narrowly missed out in both relays, but represented himself well in both individual events, finishing only behind juniors and seniors.
Qualifiers advance to Championship Saturday at Mt. SAC. The link to meet information is above.

GRIZZLIES SHINE UNDER THE LIGHTS!!!
RECORD 13 TITLES OUT OF 32
You always hope to have things come together at League Finals, but like anything else, those plans sometimes don't turn out as planned. In years past, we've written about disqualifications and injuries that took out sure qualifiers or champions or athletes that underperformed to the point that they lost out on the post-season. With the exception of a false start in the 100 meters, there was none of that. Competing in one of the most competitive leagues in Southern California, the Grizzlies topped their record for patches set last year, taking home 13 of the 32 available. And maybe beyond that, pretty much everyone that should have advanced did, and many raised their game to do it.
The 2012 League Finals were marked by a couple of changes. First of all, a later start. I think this was a huge success as we had a bigger crowd on hand. The other was the inclusion of Frosh-Soph races. While they did provide varsity athletes the chance to enjoy more rest and of course contributed to a larger crowd, these races were filled with scratches and empty lanes. Also, with so many fine freshmen and sophomores competing in the varsity races, they certainly were not a showcase of the league's best. And how about this...our league reluctantly uses our facility because it's the only stadium in the league with nine lanes. For years we trekked over to a lesser facility at Claremont to avoid the winds at our place and often times we boarded our buses in beautiful conditions only to find it windy at Claremont. Now we know the winds can blow through LOHS, but let's hear it for every race going wind-legal last night! After the cold conditions on Tuesday, we were treated to near-perfect conditions, and no doubt they contributed to the performances.
As far as storylines go, there were plenty. We can start at the top with Kelly Rhines, who has been a rock for this program for years. She went out in style in her last Baseline League appearance! Fending off two outstanding competitors to win the 100 and 200, she also led the relays to wins, taking home 4 patches. Ifeoma Onumonu bettered her school record in the 100 hurdles and lended her considerable abilities to both relays to qualify in 4 events. Brianna Wilson won the 400 as expected, but improved by over a full second to grab a CIF spot in the 200. In the process, she moved up to #2 in that event, passing an impressive list of who's-who in LOHS sprinting history. Kyle Beck added an inch to his school record and grabbed the League Record (post-2003) while he was at it with a vault of 14-10. The Solomon brothers took home 3 patches with William winning the high jump and triple jump and big brother Jonathan stretching out his school record to win the long jump. Victor Bolden moves on in 4 events, including a split in two great individual battles. After losing out to his teammate by .02 in the 100, he rebounded to take the 300 hurdle title over his league rival. He also plays an important role in both relays.
The stars certainly shined brightly in Grizzly Stadium last night, but there were also some new stars born. Aaron Thompson was buried in the 100 meter depth chart last year finishing 4th on our team in league, but not only did he emerge as our top sprinter (although Victor Bolden may dispute that), but he was crowned Baseline League champion last night. Aminat Iriafen put together an outstanding 100 meters to grab 3rd and the #5 mark all-time at LOHS. She also held on in the anchor position for a win in the 4x400 relay. How about young freshman Chris Byers? He qualified in 4 events, moving to #2 in the 400 and #5 in the 200 as well as contributing to both relays. That 1600 meter relay is now within .4 seconds of the school record.
There are also the little things that can go unnoticed...but didn't. The girls 300 hurdles race featured three of the top 20 hurdlers in California. Also in that heat was the 9th qualifier, young Grizzly freshman Catherine Barilla. Advancing to the final would be accomplishment enough, but now she would have to race in this loaded field. Some might jump the gun just so they wouldn't have to go through with it. Catherine has worked very hard all year in the hurdles and rose to the occasion last night. Not only did she finish 8th, but she also ran under 50 seconds for the first time this season and moved to #6 all-time. It's efforts like this that have defined this program over the years, so congratulations to all the athletes that gave their best effort and especially to those that have advanced to CIF Prelims. The post-season can be a long grind for those that make it through to the state meet and we wish those athletes the best.

PRELIMS RESULTS!!!
SOLOMON BREAKS LONG JUMP RECORD
While Tuesday was a frustrating affair with technical difficulties and no results, many Grizzlies persevered and advanced to Friday's finals. Jonathan Solomon broke free from a "Top 5" that featured 4.5 inches separating 1st to 5th and in the process became the first Grizzly to ever long jump over 22 feet! Congratulations also to Aminat Iriafen for moving into the "Top 5" in the 100 meters with a nice wind-legal effort.
Complete results follow and all those with a "Q" next to their mark have advanced to Friday's finals (Top 9 in lane races; Top 12 in distance and field events).

GRIZZLIES END WITH WINS AT RANCHO!!!
BOYS GO BACK-TO-BACK; GIRLS FINISH 2ND
We got it in! The inch of rain never came and the boys and girls track teams did what they needed to do. The boys, in a showdown of undefeated teams, handled the Cougars by a score of 76-60 to win their second consecutive Baseline League title. The girls needed a win against Rancho and then some help from Etiwanda. The Lady Grizzlies did their part with a 75-61 win, but Glendora easily defeated the Eagles.
If you were a spectator on what proved to be the biggest temperature swing during a meet in memory, you may be surprised by what you are reading. This week, the sport is being renamed Field and Track because the boys "field" carried the day. The Grizzlies outscored the Cougars an incredible 47-7 in the field!!! While being beat soundly on the track, the runners scored enough points to make the win possible. Kyle Merkley led a throw sweep with wins in both events while William Solomon won three events...the Long, Triple and High Jumps. Rancho's nationally ranked cross country team dominated as expected, but a sweep of the 100, led by Victor Bolden, who also defeated some tough competition in the 300 hurdles, keyed the win.
Last season was the first league title for the school in track and field and the team came back and went undefeated in 2012. What's impressive is that they did it after graduating so much talent. Three legs of both relays...gone, the top two sprinters in the league...gone, two CIF throwers...gone, versatile CIF finalist and Masters qualifier Ore Adegoke...gone, all distance points in Danny Hawkins and Christian Navarro...gone. Many may have looked at this as a rebuilding year, but they worked hard, persevered and ran the table...congratulations guys!
The girls also outscored the Cougars in the field, winning 5 of the 6 events, led by Amy Okonkwo's sweep of the throws. Tori Bolden jumped her way on to the top 5 list in the long jump while Ifeoma Onumonu continues to improve in the triple jump. Kelly Rhines was her steady self, winning both sprints and leading the relays to wins. The girls wind up second in league, but they will make a lot of noise in the post-season. Nothing captured the highs and lows of sports more than the day Stephanie Nevarez had. After defying the odds and making a move to finish 3rd in the 1600, she let up after the wrong line at the finish, surrendering the point she earned. She was devastated, but channeled her energy towards making amends, which she did and then some. She came back and finished second in the 800 against a tough Rancho distance squad, earning an important 3 points for the team.
Team pictures are tomorrow in the stadium after school. Next week we will host the Baseline League Prelims and Finals in Grizzly Stadium...details to come after the league meeting this week.

BOLDEN STARS AT MT. SAC!!!
MERKLEY SETS F/S RECORD AT INLAND EMPIRE
It was another busy weekend for the Grizzlies as they split up to send athletes to two different meets...in two different directions. Both meets have qualifying standards for entry, but the team was well-represented.
Victor Bolden led the team at Mt. SAC, improving his own school record in the 300 hurdles. He also led two relays up a notch on the top 5 lists. While Kelly Rhines did not set any records at Mt. SAC, she placed well in both the 100 and 200 invitational heats, gaining valuable experience for her post-season run.
Tyler Merkley broke the F/S school record in the discus and almost had the shot put record as well, leading mostly a throwers contingent at the Inland Empire Championships on a hot day at Vista Murrieta High School. Joel Sincock just missed a top 5 spot as he knocked off 6 seconds from his 1600 time.
The Grizzlies travel to Rancho on Wednesday for their final league meet of the season against the Cougars.

TEAM SWEEPS AT UPLAND!!!
Highlander Stadium has at times been a house of horrors for the Grizzlies. Upland has traditionally had some outstanding track and field squads. They are a team in transition and the Grizzlies took full advantage with their most balanced attack to date to notch comfortable wins.
The boys remained undefeated to set up a league title showdown at Rancho Cucamonga next Wednesday. The Grizzlies won 14 of 16 events as William Solomon won two jumps and Joel Sincock took both the 1600 and 3200. Congratulations to Jonathan Solomon who cracked the 21 foot barrier to move to #4 in school history...only 2.5 inches from the school record!
The girls also won 14 of 16 events and, in a rarity, matched the boys score exactly! Kelly Rhines and Ifeoma Onumonu both won 3 individual events and Amy Okonkwo won both throws. Coach Merkley has the throwers peaking at the right time as both Okonkwo and Julie Schaumkel bettered their "top 5" marks in the shot put and Amy moved up a spot in the discus with a PR that took her over 100 feet for the first time. With the win, the Grizzlies will go into their meet with Rancho with one loss to Glendora. The Tartans win the league title with a win over Etiwanda next week. If we defeat Rancho and Etiwanda beats Glendora, then it will be a three-team co-championship with Glendora and Etiwanda.
Not sure of the wind conditions as their was no gauge, but some of the times seemed unusually fast. Note that some events had no marks in the results.

GRIZZLIES CRUISE BY ALTA LOMA!!!
After a rare April rainout on our all-weather track, the team snuck one in between storms against the Braves of Alta Loma. It was good to get it in so that we didn't end up with multiple meets in an upcoming week. The improved Braves didn't threaten either team, but the cold and windy conditions made for modest performances. Only Julie Schaumkel provided a Top 5 mark, moving up to #4 in the shot put.
The boys remained undefeated as William Solomon won three field events and Chris Byers and Victor Bolden each notched two wins on the track. The girls were led by their superstars, with Kelly Rhines and Ifeoma Onumonu each winning two races. Amy Okonkwo continued her success with wins in both throws.
The teams will hit the road and travel to Upland next Wednesday. Realize that only two busses will make the trip, so not all athletes will attend.

THREE SCHOOL RECORDS FALL AT ARCADIA!!!
Some of our Grizzlies spent most of their weekend at Arcadia High School. After Friday's relay session, it was back to work on Saturday and things got off to a great start. The boys 400 relay won their heat and not to be outdone, the girls not only won their heat, but by virtue of the fastest open time, they put themselves into the night portion of the meet. There were two other major highlights in the day portion; Victor Bolden broke the school record in the 300 hurdles and then led the 1600 relay to the #4 mark in school history.
The night portion really belonged to Kelly Rhines. After leading her teammates to the #2 mark all-time in winning the seeded heat of the 400 relay (4th best mark of the entire meet), she bettered both her sprint school records, finally getting legal winds to be the first Grizzly to break the 12 second barrier in the 100 meters. She faced a national who's-who in the 100 as the only Southern Section rep and one of two Californian's in the race. In the 200, she held her own with two of the best from Long Beach Poly and St. Mary's.
Results (will include relay legs when we get confirmation):
Saturday Day Meet: Boys 400 Relay: 1. 42.93 (#5 mark all-time); Boys 100: 7. Aaron Thompson - 11.24; Boys 300H: 3. Victor Bolden - 38.94 (NEW SCHOOL RECORD); Boys 1600 Relay: 5. 3:26.00 (#4 mark all-time); Girls 400 Relay: 1. 47.37 (#3 mark all-time)

GRIZZLY BATONS ARE ON FIRE!!!
The marathon that is the Arcadia Invitational got under way last night with the "Burnin' Batons" session. Mostly relays and some field events all kicked off the biggest weekend of the season before the post-season. The meet draws athletes from across the nation and you would expect that they would hold the meet in a large college stadium. But much of the charm of the meet is the venue...a decent but fairly average high school stadium that brings the packed stands into the races.
It was the boys 4x200 that kicked things off with a win in the open race. It marked the third time that a Grizzly squad dipped under 1:30 for that distance. Not to be outdone, the "A" squad, actually labeled and announced as the "B" squad at the meet, beat an impressive field in the seeded heat to run at race time, the 10th fastest mark in the nation! The invitational heat followed and, while that #10 may not have held up, our girls would have more than held their own in that race. Their time would have placed them 5th, but possibly with the competition, they may have run faster.
Our lone individual competitor of the night was Kyle Beck in the pole vault, who maintained great consistency, clearing the 14 foot mark again to finish 5th overall.
Results (will include relay legs when we receive confirmation):
Boys Pole Vault: 5. Kyle Beck - 14-3.25; Boys 4x200 Open: 1. Los Osos - 1:29.90 (#3 mark all-time); Boys 1600 Sprint Medley Seeded: 8. Los Osos - 3:46.78 (#2 mark all-time); Girls 4x200 Seeded: 1. Los Osos - 1:40.06 (#3 mark all-time); Girls 4x200 Rated: 8. Los Osos - 1:46.49

THREE LEADING MARKS AT CHINO!!!
A small group of field event athletes competed in the Chino Relays on Saturday. Brandon Diebold, Kyle Beck and William Solomon each came away with the top mark in their respective event. Diebold reached a PR in the shot put and Beck was over 14 feet again in the pole vault. However, being a relay, it was the combination of three athletes' marks in each event that determines the outcome. The emphasis was on depth and six teams placed in the top three.

BECK BREAKS POLE VAULT RECORD AS TEAMS WORK PAST ETIWANDA!!!
Few work harder at their craft than Kyle Beck. He's been one of the best at his grade level in Southern California the past two years and he continues to strive for greater heights. On Wednesday, our four year old school record fell in a dual meet with Etiwanda. Kyle jumped 14-9 to win the event and knock Dylan Beavers from the top of the record list.
There were many fine performances in our second league meet, and both teams would need all of them to finish off the Eagles. The boys won by 13 points with Brandon Diebold keying the win with a sweep of the throws. William Solomon was a double winner in the triple jump and high jump.
The girls got the momentum early with the #3 mark in the 400 relay and a gutty effort from Alex Burkhart to pick up a surprise 3 points in the 1600. The team welcomed back Ifeoma Onumonu, who followed with a win in the 100 hurdles and Brianna Wilson won a fast 400 duel. Onumonu would go on to win the 300 hurdles and the triple jump as well. The team got a big boost from Amy Okonkwo, who not only won both throws, but moved into the #2 spot in the shot put and #4 spot in the discus.

RECORD FALLS AT MT. CARMEL!!!
A small number of sprinters, hurdlers and field event athletes traveled back to San Diego to compete in the prestigious Mt. Carmel Invitational. With Spring Break in full swing and still trying to get the soccer girls acclimated back to track, the Grizzlies were not at full strength. That did not mean there was a void of strong performances.
It's easy to be overshadowed on a girls squad that features some of the best in the nation. Brianna Wilson may not get the ink, but she continues to work hard and consistently scores for the team...sometimes those all-important second and thirds that are key for victory. That hard work paid off over the weekend as she took down an "old" school record from 2006 in the 400 meters, improving over a full second to 57.24.
Freshman Chris Byers is quickly making a name for himself as he landed on our Top 5 list in the 400 meters and ran a strong 200 as well. Kyle Beck continues to soar to new heights, improving his #2 mark all-time to a lofty 14-2.
Congratulations to Kelly Rhines for being named Female Athlete of the Meet. Although the winds didn't cooperate for record purposes, she ran two "elite" marks on the day and is ranked nationally in the 100 and 200 meters.
Baseline League action resumes on Wednesday with a home meet vs. Etiwanda.

MAKING STRIDES AT APU!!!
Danny Hawkins, Christian Navarro, Janelle Myers, Alex Gonzalez, Elle Farrar and Jessica Alvarez...all consistent scorers for our varsity last season and all no longer available, due to graduation or other circumstances. In what is sometimes an assault on our Top 5 lists, the Distance Meet of Champions at Azuza Pacific in 2012 was a chance for a young group to take a step forward, earn medals and achieve personal records. Despite falling in the middle of Spring Break, many Grizzlies did just that, including two that broke important barriers...Joel Sincock moving under 4:40 in the 1600 meters and Alex Burkhart breaking 5:50 in the same event.
The meet itself can feel like a marathon and is not for the distance-phobic as this year's edition featured 9 consecutive hours of 1600 meter races. That's right, that's no typo...9 (nine) straight hours of 1600 meter races!!!

The Grizzlies opened up Baseline League action hosting the Tartans of Glendora High School. Opening home meets are often chaotic and this was no exception. On the girls side, we knew we could be in for some problems, as all four girls from the CIF champion soccer team were either injured or getting some well-deserved rest. They played a lot of games in a short period of time advancing to the State Championships. Combine that with Glendora's league championship cross country team earning a clean sweep in the distances and we were unable to make up the points. Kelly Rhines and Kira Moreland did their best to rack up as many points as they could, but it wasn't enough. Kelly won the 100, 200, and 400 while Kira took both horizontal jumps.
The boys won 11 of 16 events to pick up the win. Victor Bolden won three events (100, 300 hurdles and tied in a dead heat 110 hurdle race) and Kyle Merkley swept the throws to lead the boys.
Our next Baseline League meet will be at home against Etiwanda on the Wednesday after Spring Break, March 28th.

PICTURE PERFECT WEATHER FOR THE GRIZZLY MEET!!!
We have seen it all in the years we have held the Grizzly Invitational...from snow to rain to wind to heat, but temps in the high 70's were ideal for track and field. The wind did pick up, but it was a great day. Events like this often start off a little rough and this was no exception, but after falling behind an hour, things picked up and we ended an hour ahead. Thanks to all the families that pitched in to make it happen...it was a long day and your efforts were very much appreciated.
With the technical glitches, it was difficult to gauge our performances, but looking at the results, we did have some fine marks, including two new school records and a few other top 5 marks. With a all-star field and no winds early, Kelly Rhines defeated Jordie Munford of Rancho Cucamonga and Ashlie Curenton of Silverado to set a new school record in the glamour event, the 100 meters. With only 5/100ths of a second separating our top 4 marks, Kelly has separated herself by shattering the school record and nearly breaking 12 seconds! It may have only been a matter of time for this one, needing the right conditions and competition, which was going to come at some point. Watch for that wind-legal, sub-12 second effort coming soon!
Speaking of a matter of time...last year as a sophomore, Victor Bolden became only the second Grizzly to break 40 seconds in the 300 hurdles. When he opened the season under 40 in San Diego, it was apparent that this school record would not last long. A week is all it took. He got the competition he needed, finishing in the middle of a tight three man race, to take down Demi Adegoke's 2010 record.
It was a great day of racing with many more to come this season. Next up is our league opener against Glendora on Wednesday.

GRIZZLIES STRONG IN SEASON OPENER!!!
TEAM WINS BOTH BOYS & GIRLS 1ST PLACE TROPHIES
After a long winter, the season got under way with real competition and a long trip to San Diego to compete in the Tiger Relays. The girls were missing their soccer stars, but managed to shine anyway and the boys showed balance throughout the day. Three meet records fell as Kira Moreland opened the season with a strong winning long jump over 18 feet. Victor Bolden started the season where he ended it...which is a great place to be...breaking the 300 hurdle mark, taking it under 40 seconds. The girls frosh/soph 400 relay team also set a meet record.

ANUMBA AN ALL-AMERICAN!!!
QUALIFIES FOR OLYMPIC TRIALS
NAMPA, Idaho -In her first NCAA Indoor Track and Field Championship appearance, sophomore Michelle Anumba earned second team All-America honors with a mark of 53-0.75 (16.17). Her performance was good enough for 11th place overall with Tia Brooks from Oklahoma University winning the event with a mark of 62-04.00 (19.00).
"Making it to the national championship is a great accomplishment." assistant coach B.J. Linnenbrink commented. "This meet was a great learning experience for Michelle and we have five more opportunities between indoor and outdoor to get back here."
Anumba was the lone Blue Devil to represent the Duke women's track and field team in the championship event. To qualify, she earned a personal record mark of 55-09.75 on her sixth and final attempt at the Virginia Tech Final Qualifier last weekend.
The Rancho Cucamonga, Calif., native has also qualified for the 2012 US Olympic Trials to be held this summer.
Earlier in the day, Curtis Beach completed a record breaking performance and took first in the men's heptathlon to earn first team all-america status and ten points for the Blue Devils.
The Blue Devils will begin the outdoor season next weekend at the Wake Forest Invitational in Winston-Salem, N.C.
