London teams to kick it up a level

SOCCER: Later this month, four local sides will compete in the semifinals of their age and gender divisions of the Ontario Cup

 August 10, 2011

It is one of the most difficult competitions to win.

Heading into the Ontario Cup semifinals, four local teams have managed to survive travel, kicks from the penalty spot and tough competition to get that far.

The semifinals of this tournament are the last weekend in August on neutral sites. Taking part will be FC London 98 Elite U13 boys, North London Galaxy U17 girls, North London Galaxy women’s team and AEK London men’s team that plays out of the Western Ontario Soccer League.

FC London team is part of the boys’ FC Academy team that is the boys’ section of North London soccer club.

It was quite a weekend for James Welsh, who is the coach of the U13 team and plays for AEK London. He went from coaching a 1-0 win over Woodbridge on Saturday, advancing to the semifinal, to be part of the AEK team that went to a shootout Sunday to defeat Vaughan Azzurri 4-3 on penalty kicks after they drew 2-2.

“I pretty much spent all weekend in Toronto,” Welsh said.

This is Welsh’s first year with this group of kids. His team earned its way into the semifinal.

“When the season started, I didn’t think we’d get this far,” Welsh said. “Our tournament group to move on in the Ontario Cup has the defending champions for last year and the No. 1-rated Toronto area team in it.

“But we played well and got out of the group and now that we are here. I know we deserve to be here.”

Welsh said even though his team doesn’t have the same kind of size as some other teams, his club plays a very “positive, disciplined style.”

Welsh went from that game to the AEK semifinal and had to survive one of the most nerve-shattering episodes in soccer, kicks from the penalty spot.

AEK is the defending Ontario Cup champion but they’ve had to survive a tough road to get this far. AEK did not get one home draw in Cup play this year.

“We have this beautiful new field and haven’t had a chance to play a Cup game on it,” Welsh said. “Vaughan was a really good team.”

The win on kicks against Vaughan was accomplished without the presence of AEK coach Martin Painter.

Painter considers himself a jinx when it comes to kicks so this time around when the game got to that point, he got in his car and returned to his A-Level coaching certificate course.

“Someone had to call him in his car to tell him we won,” Welsh said. “He just can’t stand watching the kicks. I coach with him at Fanshawe College and he does this to me all the time. When the game goes to kicks he leaves and tells me ‘you pick the shooters.’ ”

The U17 girls’ team is coached by another Painter. Geoff Painter has led a number of women’s and girl’s teams to Ontario Cups and national championships.

His U17 team has made the most of a favourable draw but has also overcome a number of obstacles in its attempt to make it back to the Ontario Cup final for the second year in succession.

“Considering we lost six players from the team that made the final last year, all of them starters, we took advantage of a good draw, Painter said.

Painter and Gus Bazos, the coach of the women’s team, moved five of the players to the senior women while another suffered a long-term injury.

“When you look at that, we’ve done well,” Painter said.
