Liberty Ice Hockey Ready for Year 4!
Liberty High School varsity ice hockey joined the Capital Hockey Conference for the 2007/2008 ice hockey season. Head coach Jack Hoogeveen and assistant coach Nick Kormanyos lead the inaugural team which was comprised of only 1 senior (captain Pat Kouskouris), 7 juniors (including assistant captains Doug Kouskouris and Justin Garland), 2 sophomores and 6 freshmen. The young Patriots skated to a CHC league record of 8 wins and 5 loses which was good enough for a 2nd place finish in the CHC Blue Division and 4th place overall in the 10 team league.
The sophomore season of Liberty ice hockey saw the team skate to a first place CHC Blue Division championship with a 15-1 league record. This was good enough for a 2nd place overall CHC finish. Senior captain Doug Kouskouris and assistant captain Justin Garland were joined by seniors Alex Ottavio, Kevin Reeves, Matt West and Brandon Rivington who all helped with great on ice leadership. The Patriots advanced to the Blue Jackets Cup championship game (league tournament) where they were defeated by a talented Dublin Coffman team in a hard fought 2-0 loss (including an empty net goal to seal the win for the Rocks).
The Patriots went into year 3 with 8 new players including 5 freshmen. Coaches Hoogeveen and Kormanyos added coach Jon Edwards who was brought in to concentrate on the Liberty goaltenders. Senior Nick Zanetos captained the young roster along with assistant captains Logan Singleton and Ben Saylor. Other seniors on the ice for the 2009/2010 season were goaltender Nick Kerr and forward Joel Standley. The team found great chemistry early and showed how pure unselfish team hockey wins championships. The team won the CHC regular season championship with a league record of 15 wins to go along with only 1 loss.
After only 3 seasons of OHSAA sanctioned varsity ice hockey, the Patriots have become one of the top teams from the Columbus District (which includes teams from Dayton and Cincinnati). The Patriots have a 3 year Capital Hockey Conference record of 34 - 6. This is the 2nd best record in the league over the past 3 years.
Expectations are high for the upcoming 2010/2011 ice hockey season. Pending tryouts, the Patriots will be lead by 5 seniors who will each be skating in the 4th varsity ice hockey season – Keaton Allmaras, Anthony Bergamesca, Bryan Finneran, Robert Koehler and Jimmy Ruska look to lead the Patriots to another successful season. A very strong cast of returning underclassmen along with a number of talented new comers at tryouts will make the coaches final decisions the toughest they have had to make in 4 seasons.
The depth of talent is the major reason why Liberty High School has added a junior varsity team to the program for the 2010/2011 campaign. The team will be coached by Jon Edwards and should instantly be among the top junior varsity teams in the conference.
We look forward to seeing you at the rink this season and cheering on your Liberty High School ice hockey Patriots!
