Craig, Johnson named to All-State Teams

Graduated seniors Alexa Craig and Kylee Johnson earned All-State recognition from the Indiana High School Tennis Coaches Association as announced on June 10.

Craig was voted to the Academic All-State team.  Criteria for the honor squad is a cumulative grade point average of at least 3.6 on a 4.0 scale, an SAT score of at least 1100 (on the 1600 test) or a 1650 (on the 2400 test), or an ACT score of at least 24.

From the nominees, the top 50 girls are named Academic All-State.  The SAT/ACT score counts for 60% of the ratio, while the GPA counts for 40%.

It marks the second consecutive year that Lawrence North was represented on the Academic All-State Team, with Kelsey Miller earning that recognition in 2007.  LN's Kaitlin Jensen was Academic All-State in 2005.

Johnson was voted to the All-State Singles Second Team after advancing to the Round of 16 in the 2008 IHSAA Tournament.  The three-time all-state performer finished the campaign with a 16-5 overall record, including a 7-1 slate in tournament play.  Johnson was an All-State first-team pick as a junior in 2007, a second-team all-state selection as a sophomore in 2006, and an honorable mention all-state singles pick as a freshman in 2005.

 

Johnson falls in Singles Regional

Kylee Johnson finished her stellar Lawrence North career by competing in the IHSAA Singles Regional on May 31 at Park Tudor.

Johnson defeated Whiteland junior Brittany Counts (17-4 regular season, 3-1 tournament) by scores of 6-3, 6-4 in the morning match.

In the afternoon round, Johnson (9-4, 7-1) fell to Avon junior Christina Riley (20-0, 7-0) by a 6-2, 6-1 count.

Senior standout Kylee Johnson moved past the IHSAA Singles Sectional with her sixth consecutive victory in tournament play.  Johnson beat Lauren Kessing of Bishop Chatard on Tuesday at North Central.

Johnson had recorded a 6-1, 6-0 victory over Noblesville's #1 player on May 21 and a 6-0, 6-0 win over Moriah Ladd of Arlington on May 20.

 

LN falls in Sectional Final

Senior Kylee Johnson advanced in the IHSAA Singles Tournament with a straight-set win against Warren Central in the Lawrence North Sectional finals on May 17.  

Lawrence North had its four-match winning streak snapped by a 4-1 setback to Warren Central in the Sectional final.  The Wildcats finished the 2008 season with a 9-9 record.

 

LN reaches Sectional Final

Lawrence North advanced to the Sectional final with a 4-1 victory over Scecina on Friday at home.  The Wildcats will face Warren Central in the championship match at 10 a.m. Saturday at LN.  The Cats have won four straight matches and seven of its last eight to improve to 9-8 this season.

Senior Kylee Johnson (#1 singles) and Alexa Craig (#3 singles) recorded quick wins to give LN a 2-0 lead in the match.  The #2 doubles team of junior Allie Kipper and freshman Nicole Gentry clinched the team victory with a 6-1, 7-5 decision.  Junior Debra Easton-Bates added a straight-set win at #2 singles to account for the Cats' fourth point.  The #1 doubles duo of sophomore Kameron Geiger and senior Alex Navarre dropped a third-set tie-breaker, 7-5.

 

Cats rally to Sectional win over LC!

Senior Alex Navarre and sophomore Kameron Geiger came back to win a hard-fought three-set match at #1 doubles to provide the deciding point in Lawrence North's 3-2 triumph over Lawrence Central in the first round of the LN Sectional on Thursday.

The host Wildcats advance to the Sectional semi-finals on Friday at 4:30 p.m. vs. Scecina.  LN has won six of its last seven matches to improve to 8-8 on the campaign.

After dropping the first set, Navarre and Geiger came on strong to win the second set.  In the third set, the Cats' duo broke a 5-all tie by winning two straight games to clinch the match.

LN's #2 doubles team of junior Allie Kipper and freshman Nicole Gentry earned the Wildcats' second point with a three-set win, 6-3, 3-6, 6-0.

Senior Kylee Johnson had given LN a 1-0 match lead with a dominant win at #1 singles.  Senior Alexa Craig dropped a marathon two-set match at #3 singles, while freshman Clair Kassebaum fell at #2 singles.

 

Seniors lead LN to win over Ben Davis

Seniors Alexa Craig, Kylee Johnson, and Alex Navarre completed their regular-season home careers with a 4-1 victory over Ben Davis on May 13.

Craig is a three-year letterwinner, Johnson is a four-year monogrammer, and Navarre earned her second varsity letter this season.  Craig and Navarre are co-recipients of the team's Mental Attitude Award, while Johnson is the Most Outstanding Player.

Johnson led the Wildcats to the early lead against Ben Davis with a victory at #1 singles, while Craig was next with a win at #3 singles.  Junior two-time letterwinner Debra Easton-Bates added a straight-set triumph at #2 singles and the Cats' #2 doubles team of junior two-year letterwinner Allie Kipper and Nicole Gentry recorded a 6-0, 6-0.  Navarre and sophomore Kameron Geiger lost a hard-fought match at #1 doubles, 6-3 in the final set.

Twelve Wildcats received varsity letters following the match:  Craig, junior Ashlyn Douthitt, Easton-Bates, sophomore Lindsey Evans, Geiger, Gentry, junior Claire Harton, junior Mary Harton, Johnson, freshman Clair Kassebaum, Kipper, and Navarre.

Sophomore Elizabeth Cangany received the Mental Attitude Award for the junior varsity team, while Katie Cessna was the freshman recipient of the Mental Attitude Award.  Joining Cangany as junior varsity award winners are sophomore Julie Byers, Cessna, sophomore Mackenzie Conner, freshman Katie Joseph, sophomore Ajia Sanders, freshman Misa Takeda, sophomore Karolina Vega, sophomore Misha Wee, and sophomore Jamie Youngman.

Lawrence North opens Sectional play on Thursday at 4:30 p.m. at home against Lawrence Central.  LN earned a 3-2 win over the Bears in the regular-season opener on April 9.

 

Cats beat Perry

Lawrence North won its fourth match in five outings with a 4-1 triumph at Perry Meridian on Monday.

Senior Kylee Johnson gave LN a 1-0 lead with a dominant win at #1 singles.  Senior Alexa Craig made it 2-0 with an impressive victory at #3 singles.  The Cats' #2 doubles team of junior Allie Kipper and freshman Nicole Gentry clinched the match with a 6-2, 6-3 decision.  Junior Debra Easton-Bates added the fourth LN point with a 7-5, 6-2 win at #2 singles.

 

Wildcats beat Southport to reach County Semi's

Lawrence North advanced to the semi-finals of the Marion County Tournament with a 4-1 victory over Southport on May 10 at Park Tudor.

Senior Kylee Johnson gave the Wildcats a 1-0 lead with a win at #1 singles.  Senior Alexa Craig increased the margin to 2-0 with a 6-0, 6-0 victory at #3 singles.  The LN #2 doubles team of junior Allie Kipper and Nicole Gentry clinched the match with a straight-set win at #2 doubles.  Junior Debra Easton-Bates added a three-set victory at #2 singles to make it 4-1.

Top-ranked and defending state champion Park Tudor stopped LN's run in the semi-finals with a 4-1 decision on Saturday afternoon.  Kylee Johnson recorded a 6-2, 6-4 win over PT's Lindsay Thygesen at #1 singles for the Cats' point.

 

LN advances to County Quarters

Lawrence North opened play in the Marion County Tournament with an impressive 5-0 win at Lutheran on May 6.

The Wildcats got singles wins from senior Kylee Johnson, junior Debra Easton-Bates, and senior Alexa Craig and doubles victories from the #1 tandem of sophomore Kameron Geiger and senior Alex Navarre and the #2 combo of freshman Nicole Gentry and junior Allie Kipper.

 

LN upsets #18 Hamilton Southeastern

Lawrence North used a singles sweep to upset 18th-ranked Hamilton Southeastern, 3-2, on May 1 at the LN courts.

Senior Kylee Johnson gave the Wildcats a 1-0 lead in the match with a dominating performance at #1 singles.

After HSE swept the doubles to take a 2-1 edge, Cats junior Debra Easton-Bates prevailed in a hard-fought 9-7 tie-breaker in the second set to record a straight-set triumph at #2 singles to even the match.

Senior Alexa Craig then recorded the deciding point with a three-set victory at #3 singles, winning 6-3 in the third set.

 

LN Sweeps Chatard

Lawrence North used five straight-set victories to record a 5-0 victory over Bishop Chatard on Monday at LN.

Sophomore Kameron Geiger was victorious at #3 singles to give the Wildcats a 1-0 lead in the match.

Senior Alexa Craig made it 2-0 with a triumph at #2 singles.

The LN #1 doubles team of junior Allie Kipper and senior Alex Navarre clinched the team victory, pulling out a 6-4 win in the second set.

The Cats' #2 doubles team of sophomore Lindsey Evans and freshman Nicole Gentry extended the team's advantage to 4-0 by winning 6-1, 7-5.

Junior Debra Easton-Bates finished off the match with a 6-4, 6-3 victory over Lauren Paris at #1 singles.

Cats open with win over LC!

Lawrence North began its 2008 season with a dramatic 3-2 victory over rival Lawrence Central on the road on April 9.

Senior Kylee Johnson recorded a 6-1, 6-1 win over Hilary Nelson at #1 singles to give the Wildcats a 1-0 lead in the match.

The LN #1 doubles team of seniors Alexa Craig and Alex Navarre increased the Cats' advantage in the match to 2-0 with a straight-set victory.

LC countered with wins at #2 and #3 singles to tie the match at two.

The LN number two doubles team of junior Allie Kipper and freshman Nicole Gentry then provided the deciding point in the match by rallying from a 4-1 deficit in the third set to record a 6-1, 1-6, 6-4 triumph.
