U14 Girls Fall Season

The Select Girls 98/99 (14U) ended the 2011-2012 club season with a heartbreaking 2-1 loss in the round of 16 of the State Cup. The Select 98/99 Girls have accomplished quite a bit since Fort Lauderdale Select was established, being the first Select team to make it to a tournament final, the first Select team to win a major tournament, and now the first Select team to advance to the round of 16 in the State Cup. Coming off that Sweet Sixteen appearance in the last year’s State Cup, the start of the 2012-13 season has the Select 98/99 Girls competing against and defeating some of the best teams in the state of Florida.

As a result of their round of 16 performance in Premier Division of the State Cup tournament, the Select 98/99 Girls were invited to participate in the FYSA State Premier League (FSPL). The Select 98/99 Girls accepted that invitation along with eight of the other top teams in the state, including local rivals, Pinecrest Premier, Sunrise Sting, and the Tropical Wildcats. In addition to playing the top teams locally, the Select 98/99 Girls spent three weekends in Melbourne, Auburndale, and Lakeland, playing an FSPL game on Saturday and an FSPL game on Sunday of each weekend trip. After losing their first game in FSPL (and their first game of the year), the Select 98/99 Girls ran off an unbeaten streak of 7 games against the top-ranked teams in the state, finishing the FSPL mini-season with a record of 5-1-2, good for 17 points and a FIRST PLACE finish.

In October, 2012, the Select 98/99 Girls followed up their strong FSPL performance, making it to the semifinals of the 16th Annual West Pines Kickoff Classic, where they lost to the eventual champion by a goal in a game that could have gone either way. The Select 98/99 Girls were then ready to go to the Disney Thanksgiving Showcase to show the rest of the country how far they have come as a team, but the Disney tournament directors did not accept the team’s application and extend an invitation. Hotel rooms were canceled and Thanksgiving, travel, and family plans changed. While Disney eventually realized its error in judgment and eventually did extend an invitation to the Select 98/99 Girls to participate, it was too late for the girls and their families to again alter Thanksgiving plans. A national tournament, however, is on the horizon for this Club.

The Select 98/99 Girls ended up spending their Thanksgiving break in Plantation, participating in the 2012 Plantation Thanksgiving Classic, going 5-0 with 4 shutouts and outscoring their opponents 15-1. Abby Pangallo protected the goal with 4 straight shutouts and an outstanding effort in the Championship game. During this tournament, Mary McCormick, Madeline Turner, Brooke Bauer, and Amy Barra had three goals each, Kylie Dicarolis scored twice, and Ally Johnson scored the game winner in the final minutes of the Championship game against Plantation Copa on a beautiful through-ball from Bauer. The defense was anchored by Mackenzie Fee and Gabi Meli and supported by the superb midfield play, anchored by Kaitlyn Pawelczyk and Nora Tight. Pawelczyk racked up three assists in one game alone and provided numerous opportunities for the goal scorers throughout the tournament.

The Select 98/99 Girls have truly come together as a TEAM of well-conditioned young athletes. Coach Flynn Turner has built upon the TEAM concept initiated last year under Coach Jaime Gruber who led the girls into the round of 16 at State Cup. In addition to the individuals mentioned above, the team’s success has benefited from speedy forwards Charlotte Doyle, Michelle Barra, and Mariana Girardo, the ball skills of midfielder Lainey Davis, and the strength and tenacity of defenders Stephanie Aberdeen, Sydney Juda, Alyse Testa, and Patricia Haney.
