U9 Girls Blue Team Finish Second at West Pines Tournament

The U9 Girls Blue Team were runners up in the Classic Black division of the West Pines Tournament. After strong victories over Wellington and Miami Beach, they fell to Boynton Beach Knights but made it to the Final due to goal differential being the tie breaker. Credit must also go to the U9 Girls White Team who, by beating Wellington in their final game, created a 3-way tie for second place in the group stage which changed the tie-breaker from head-to-head to goal differential, allowing the Blue Team to go to the Final. In the Final, the Blue Team played well and hard, a sure sign of continued success in the future.

U10 Girls Season wrap up
So Fl Cup

As the 2014season comes to a close the Select U10 Girls wrap up their 6v6 2year experience with a total eight finals. Matching last year’s four finals, two as champions, two as finalist.

The girls started the season as finalists in Wellington, going into the finals unbeaten including a semi-final win over West Pines, but lost in the finals to conclude the tournament. The U10 girls fought through some adjustments midway through the season finishing outside the finals in their next two tournaments but rebounded in fine fashion to winning the South Florida cup in 8v8 play as they prepare for next year. Then proceeded to back up that win with a finalist performance in the Miami Cup in a shootout against Weston. The shootout went two rounds including shots by both goalies until Weston edged out in front with their final shooter. The U10Girls went on the road to Port St Lucie to win their final event over Memorial weekend. As in the Wellington event girls played the semi-final opponent again in the finals. The girls showed their maturity as they maintained focused starting the final with a goal off the kickoff. Holding on to the one-nil lead for better part of of the first half the U10 girls remained calm and pulled away to win 7-1.

I can’t say enough of the progress these young ladies have made in their last two years. Starting the U9 season with a 0-8 loss to Boynton the girls worked hard to become the team they are today. As I leave the girls in the competent leadership of Coach Jodie I wish them the best and thank them for all they taught me and also kudos to the parents for tall their unrelenting support. Without a doubt we could have never done as well if it wasn’t for the unlimited efforts of Scott Favreau our team manager. Scott ran logistics for both squads this year during the regular season and the rotations in the tournament season. The paperwork is daunting, the forms needed in triplicate, or more for every player for every tournament. Not to mention organizing the Fitness weekend, then as head cook for the event, Scott’s commitment to the growth of this team was beyond all measure.

Again let me bid you all a fond farewell, stay in touch, and know my heart goes with you.

U10 Girls Fitness weekend
Fitness weekend

INTRODUCING: V-BLAST©

The Ft. Lauderdale Select U10 girls participated in a fitness training weekend. The focus for the weekend was to introduce the girls to fitness training utilizing “optimal windows of trainability” (accelerated adaptation to training). V-BLAST©, is a concept I have been developing based on the LTAD, (long term athlete development), model by sport scientist Dr. Istvan Balyi. My concentration is in the growing void between “old fashion” go outside and play and overall physical coordination. A popular buzz word in sports is “physicality”. It’s that capacity for physical response to the unexpected, (maintaining balance in those awkward movements or producing speed in confined space,). As a coach my interest in this type of training is two fold. One being the introduction of proper basic movement and balance, but more importantly to help our young athletes develop overall coordination. It used to be that as the season changed so did the game we played. Consequently coordination came by way of “natural cross training”. In today’s world the early “specialization” of our children is more common place. Their sense of balance is consistent with those motions of a sport or two. The muscles used, and muscle memory archive, follows suit with the same sport or two, and so forth. V-BLAST© is about mixing up the games played and utilizing training windows to increase overall physicality, encouraging safe continued participation in athletics and promote confidence.

So began the training for The U10 girls. Their training started Friday night setting up camp and receiving an informal review of the weekend’s purpose and activities. We were fortunate to have person trainer and Iron woman participant Michelle Tovar-King to work with the girls. Over the weekend the girls participated in various conditioning sessions concentrating on the particular “training window” open to the girls at this age i.e. stamina, speed and strength. I was very impressed with how the girls completed the tasks being asked of them and their time management. Our day started at sunrise Saturday morning and ended before noon on Sunday. In that time the girl clocked three hours of conditioning training, ran and biked over 12 miles, participated in over three hours of “like-sport” cross training, and never gave up.

We had some real accomplishments at the V-BLAST© fitness weekend. In the weeks following, the girls have upped their level of play on the field. I truly believe being aware of what they can really do physically has played a vital part in our performance going into the last month of our tournament season. The equation for good soccer just got simpler, they play knowing they can make it through that game and more. There is less reserve play, the girls are playing all out, they are MAKING the decision to play to win.

Of course, this is only the tip of the iceberg in terms of training, there are still other windows for other areas of training, at other ages, and repeat “windows” during the developmental ages of 10-16. This was only the first step.

I hope to do this again, anyone interested in participating please contact me at zmolina@ftlselect.com or text me at 954 850-0776. Since these sessions are directly related to like chronological/developmental age, as I get a “group” I can arrange for the training.

U5 Boys Spring 2014
U5 Boys

The U5 Select Future Stars completed the Spring 3v3 schedule with a special World Cup Challenge on the final day of the season. In what would be considered an enormous upset on the real World Cup stage, South Africa claimed the title as Spring 2014 Select 3v3 World Cup Champs!

The first Select group to start from the U5 age level, this collection of players smiled, laughed, learned and developed by leaps and bounds this spring. Like the sun shining in their eyes in the above photo, the future is very bright for FTL Select and this amazing group of kids!

Coach Tommy and Coach Manny would like to say thanks again for a great season!

U12 Boys - Palm Beach Cup
U12 Boys Palm Beach Cup

The U12 boys competed in the Palm Beach Cup in the 11v11-bracket, where all the teams who prefered to play that format were together in one division. After a tough regular season this year in the U12 div 1, things started to get better in 2014. The team lifted the trophy of the Wellington tournament in January, then made it to the semis of the div 1 Regions Cup and had some great performances during the U13 spring league, winning against a few U13 teams on the way. Things really came together in the Palm Beach Cup this past weekend when the hard work of getting used to the big field and doing the right runs finally paid off with a clean victory of 4 wins out of the 4 games, beating Plantation (7-1), Sunrise (6-1), Team Boca (3-1) and finally Davie Sharks (5-0) in some awesome displays of pressing and moving without the ball. Despite the clear results, all games had plenty of excitement and parents and coaches lost a few years of their lives there.

Each game had a tough first half in stock, going behind 0-1 after missing clear chances against Plantation and Team Boca and being 1-1 vs. Sunrise and barely holding on to a 1-0 lead in the final vs. Davie. Each time, the team found another gear in the second half, and also displayed a newly found confidence that grew with each win and so they never doubted that we would find the goal eventually, and ended up being rewarded each game in the second half for their patience and persistence. Clearly the MVP of the tournament, Nino Smith won roughly 99% of all battles in midfield and, after spinning his (hard-hitting) opponents dizzy, kept splitting the opponent's defence with Da Vinciesque artistry by playing one wonderful through ball after the other. The two main strikers Daniel Popa and Cali "The Rocket" Canaval kept reading those balls better and better and also combined on not-seen-before one-touch stuff together with the highly creative Santi Junco in the middle. In addition, the wings provided even more speed and runs as the were heralded to sprint up and down the field and sprinted what felt like several marathons and provided pressure and goals from the flanks from "Lightning" Anthony Ells and U11-loan Lucas Calixto (who both had to wear protective eyewear because of their high velocity, according to some rumours).

Keeping the goals against down to 1 or 0 was delivered by Gio "El Gatto" Bonilla in goal with some amazing saves and brave actions again and in front of him by the 4 musketeers Will "Ronaldo" Teke, Will "Ruben" Vold, Tommy "Workhorse" McCormick and Gabe "Sliding Tackle" Guedez. The outside backs not only battled against strong opponents in the back, but also played the ball nicely and skillfully into midfield and provided much assistance in the attack, while hard-hitting Tommy and "Ruben" left their marks on a few opponents shins and showed a lot of maturity commanding the defence and keeping the defensive shape in order. The "Bench-people" finally played a big part in lifting the trophy, providing the legs and often finishing off tired opponents with piercing runs by Winfield Bondurant and Juan Valderrama (both scoring the final) up front and smart plays by allrounder Pedro Kauffmann (who played every position other than goalkeeper in the course of the tournament), Giulio Potenti, Brett Vogel and Lukey "Jumps" Joannou, who showed signs of brilliance with a few fine passes and one left-footed goal in the bottom corner. Coach Stephan was rewarded with the icy remainder if the Gatorade-cooler over his back by his team and a telling-off at close proximity from an opponent's mum after the final, because one of the Select-players had angered her by openly confessing that he actually was Cristiano Ronaldo.

She was right, maybe they weren't quite that good - yet !!!

U10 Boys Blue Team - Finalist at Nova 5v5
U10 Boys Blue Nova
The U 10 boys Blue have much to be proud of. They went undefeated in their bracket and made it to the final. Their effort and nice passing saw them win their first game 4-2, their second 4-0 and their third 3-1 when they came back from being down 1-0 at halftime to win the game. They lost in the final to Weston but the loss doesn’t take away from the great tournament the team had. Thank you to Coach Chris, Coach Laurie, Coach Scott and the U 10 boys and their families for all of their support.

U10 Boys White SF Cup
The U10 Boys White Team won the Trophy Division of the South Florida Cup held March 29-30 at Tradewinds Park. After winning their group games 3-2 and 3-1, they earned a bye to the Final which they won by a score of 2-1. In every game the players showed courage and determination in addition to, of course, skill and teamwork. The second victory was impressive as they went down 1-0 but then fought back to win 3-1. The Final game was not decided until just 3 minutes from time when they broke the 1-1 deadlock to win the game and the Championship. Coach Chris, Coach Scott and Coach Laurie are especially proud of the players for their high-intensity, pressing playing style and eagerness to pass and work as a team. Congratulations to Cole, Jagger, Kevin, Lucas, Caio, David, Kellen and Jake!!

U12 Boys - Region Cup
U12 Boys Region Cup

U12 Boys make it to final four of the Regions Cup div 1 The tournament started with a tough loss to Cooper City in the group stage 2 weeks earlier, a hard-fought game against our arch-rival (who beat us at last year's Disney Memorial tournament in the semis) that we lost on a goal that our keeper saved, but a tree hanging over the goal brought it back into the game and it ended up in the net via the back of our own goalie. After conceding a late second goal, in a three-team group, we knew it would be hard to end up first after that, especially when we were up against Weston' Premier White team next and 3 starters out for that game on Sunday. With Weston beating Cooper City 2-1, our chances were still alive and so we decided to play Italian-style: score an early goal (a long-range free kick by Gabriel Guedez) and pack the back! A frustrated Weston-team tried to beat our well-positioned "Masters of Shifting", but could not find a hole in our defense, marshalled by Tommy McCormick and the super-sub goalie Tucker Cone, who played his very first game in goal and saved some unbelievable shots and we continued to be dangerous on set pieces and counters. In the second half the boys converted a corner kick like pros with a lay-up and a header from Cali Canaval. Still playing to gain attention for a spot on the 2014 Brazil World Cup on the Colombian squad, Cali decided to score a second goal, top-corner from 30 yards out to seal the game.

Since the results showed Cooper City above us and no other results or schedule posted, it looked like we came short anyway and had our sights set at another tournament, when the FYSA send out an email Tuesday afternoon that we were instead scheduled to determine who would go through to the semi-final of the Regions Cup by playing a penalty-shootout that same Friday night. Without preparation, we faced Cooper City once more and went all the way to the last kick, with one goal up, after a few cat-like saves by Gio Bonilla denied all but one of their penalties. Our last kick-taker puts it over the bar, but another save meant that we were through to the semi-finals of the Regions Cup div 1, to play against one of the top-teams of the region, West Pines!

With players being out of town and unavailable because of the late scheduling change, we had to play this game with one sub only, in the grueling 1pm-heat of Cutler Ridge, against a West Pines team that plays U13 in the regular season and only lost 4 games this year there. With our usual strength of shifting well and running hard, we started well and played balls out of the back that gave the opposing team a lot to think about in the first quarter. After a lapse of concentration in defense after 15min, we conceded a counter-attack goal against a physically and technically stronger opponent and fought hard all game to get one back. The heat and the lack of subs, combined with the high-workrate tactic, meant we fought a downhill battle, but we still hung in there and had two good chances after some nice crosses, but Juan Valderrama couldn't convert the first one and Cali came late for the second, and West Pines finally slotted in a second one to finish the game off.

The boys will look to continue to do well and when they switch to 11v11 and play the 7-week Micro Season of the PBSL that starts March 22. Go Select!

U9 Boys White reaches Semi-finals at Weston Cup
U9B Weston Cup
Congratulations to the U9 White team that reached the semi-finals after sweeping their bracket at the Weston Tournament this weekend. Terrific play from twins Juan and Manuel, brothers Domenico and Padraig (from U8), Dean, Xander, Brody and Paul. Only a controversial called back goal kept them from the finals after three tough games where they fought their way to victory. Congratulations to Coach Mike as well who did an outstanding job juggling rosters and coaching the team in the tournament.

U16 Boys SFUYSA Division Champions
U16B SFU

Well done to our senior boys teams for becoming Champions in the Season ending Playoffs!! This past weekend was the playoffs for the regular season and our U15 and U16 boys made playoffs by finishing in the top 4 in their respective Division 2 leagues.

Our U16 boys came in 2nd in the league to make the playoffs. They had a very hard fought semi final against Key Biscayne which ended 2-2 after two overtime periods. The boys managed to pull it out 8-7 in a thrilling penalty shootout.

If that wasn't heart stopping enough for the coaches and parents they decided to do the same in the Final. The team tied 0-0 with Miami Strike Force and went into another shootout and came out on top 4-1.
It was a great ending to a tough regular league season with most of our boys double teaming - playing on our club team and also their high school teams throughout the season.
Special mention needs to go to our goal keeper Jesus who performed brilliantly in both shootouts. Congrats to all the coaches, team managers and boys for a fantastic weekend and for playing with guts and class.

U15 Boys - SFUYSA Division Champions
U15B SFU

The Fort Lauderdale Select U15 boys entered the playoffs as the 2nd seed in their division and faced the Weston Premier Green team in the semi finals. In a very exiting game, which featured a fantastic goal from Andrew Knebel with a volley from outside the box (certainly a candidate for “Goal of the season” for the team) the boys showed heart and ended up winning 3:2 after being down twice.

They followed up with a hard fought final win, beating the first seeded Doral Soccer Blue team 1-0 by a lone goal from Elvis Montes to win the playoff final. The Doral Soccer Blue team had been responsible for the only loss of our boys during the regular season and seemed rather surprised by the tenacity of our team in this rematch. Unfortunately they did not respond well and earned 6 yellow cards and 2 red card due to their frustrations…

Players and parents should not only be congratulated for ending off a great season but also for maintaining their composure during the heated final and showing everyone how to compete with guts and class.

The U15 Boys are off to the Weston Cup next where they will try to extend their streak of 17 undefeated games in a row.

U15 Boys - Wellington Tournament Champions!!
Wellington U15 Boys
After focussing solely on Early and Regular Season play so far in the Season the U15 Boys entered the 7th annual Wellington Shootout as the start for their 2014 campaign. After the team gave up a 2 goal lead in the last 2 minutes against Weston to draw 2:2 in the opening game they responded well 8 hours later in an exciting evening game against Wellington winning 3:2. In order to qualify for the final the team needed a win in the third game against Team Boca and got it with a 2:0 victory. In the final Select faced Coral Springs United. The game, played under the lights again, turned out to be one of the best performances of the team this season. At the end the boys celebrated a 7:1 victory and another trophy!!

U12 Boys - Winner at the Wellington Tournament
Wellington Tournament
The U12 boys had a great weekend in Wellington, winning the group against teams from Orlando City, West Pines and Palm Beach Nomads with three straight wins and then beating Team Boca 5-0 in a final that was very close for the first half, when we hit the post what felt like 20 times (apparently it was "only" 6 times I was being told) until we finally scored. The magician in the middle was Nino Smith, who won every ball in the center and played the perfect passes, many of those into the path of Barnabas, who then fired some long-range missiles, earning him a few hattricks over the course of the tournament. The entire team played really well and was able to show what they are made of, passing the ball around nicely and defending with intelligence and power, and with Gio, the panther from Uruguay, in goal we only conceded 5 goals in 4 games and he even scored a goal when he played for the last 10min as a winger! Great weekend, now lets do it even better in the league, go Select!

U11 Boys - Disney Memorial Day Tournament
U11 Boys Disney

Our U11 boys reached the Final Four at the Disney Memorial Shootout, after winning all three group games, coming from behind on two of them. The comeback-kings fought back from 0-1 in their opener vs. Brandon FC to win 5-2, then went down 1-3 vs. Cutler Ridge to win 5-3 (with a goal from a punt from superkeeper Gio Bonilla!) and finally sealed the deal with a 2-0-win vs. Davie United. In the semis vs. a strong Cooper City Cobras, they once again managed to get behind quickly and repeated the pattern of coming back strong, when they turned a 0-2 around in the second half to 2-2, with a screamer of second-half substitution Winn Bondurant. Failing to score on numerous occasions (once hitting the post), luck was on the opponents side when they scored two late goals to make it 2-4.
Results:
5-2 vs. Brandon FC (goals by Cali, Ariel, Barnabas, Santi)
5-3 vs. Cutler Ridge (Barnabas, Gio, Cali, Tommy)
2-0 vs. Davie United (Santi, Tucker)
2-4 vs. Cooper City Cobras (Barnabas, Winn)

U9 Girls Palm Beach Cup

WOW! Pure poetic justice is the only way to explain the U9 girls journey this year. The Ft. Lauderdale Select U9 girls completed their last tournament of the year playing in the U10 Silver Division in the Palm Beach Cup. But nine long months ago they started the season with a friendly against Boynton Beach, we lost 0-6. Unbeknownst to all, a rivalry was born. In subsequent meetings the winners banner wavered to and from. We beat the Boynton U9 squad in bracket play in the Coral Springs Cup, then lost to them in the final.

The Palm Beach Cup brought another meeting against Boynton, this time the U10 squad. In a come from behind effort our U9 girls overcame a two-nil deficit to finish with a 4-3 win in bracket play. The two teams would meet yet again in the final. Again down 2-nil at halftime the U9 girls, comprised of 7 1/2 (very important to mention the half),8, and 9 year olds, reached deep and charged out to take the lead 3-2. A lead they held until Boynton tied late in the second half. Shoot out final- again! Our squad secured victory as all our attempts claimed GOAL! Mallory denied Boynton's second shooter and Hanna sealed the victory as our last shooter. Congrats to all the girls. Scoring was spread amongst six players, defense was rotated between four players. And then there's our goalie!!! No words, no words,

The weather proved to be a major challenge in this weekend’s South Florida Shootout. A rained out meeting between Select and Pinecrest in the quarterfinals was to be the match up for the finals. Select Girls U10 scored in the first half and held the one-nil differential until just before half. With a few minutes to go Pinecrest tied the score. Fullbacks Erin and Madison gave Select a few good looks, having scored two goals apiece via defensive overlaps the previous game. While the coaches were preparing for the probability of title defining penalty kicks, the Select girls adjusted to a full field press. Three minutes left in the game, Sophia pressured the opposition to recoup the ball deep in our offensive third, crossing the ball to the top of the goalie box. Allyssa got a foot on the ball securing the go ahead goal.

The Girls U10 parents and players are anxiously awaiting the return of Coach Cate, to resume their season and the work at hand.

Thank you for allowing us to be a part of your weekend

Coach Zureida and Coach Marc

U15 Girls
Congratulations to the U15 girls on an incredible season. The team won the very competitive Tampa tournament, came in first place in the FLUGSA Premier League, went to the finals in the Kelme Cup, and then advanced into the second round of State Cup missing the top 16 by just 1 goal! Very likely the team will finish the season with a top 20 ranking in the state. Great work Girls, Coach Marc and all the parents!

U9 Girls Miami Lakes Soccer Shootout

There was fair weather after the storm as the Girls U9 Select made their forth final this season. Playing through long rain delays, the Girls U9 held their ground in a hard fought final but fell short of victory in a 0-2 loss to Coral Gables. Congratulations to the girls. Our next outing will be Weston Jamboree later this month. As you know we have several U8 girls on the squad. They will be making their tournament debut as a U8 team in the Weston Jamboree. Good Luck to the U8 squad, your commitment to Select U9 is much appreciated. Lets finish the season strong!

U9 Girls

The third time was the charm for Select U9 Girls. After making the finals in the Wellington and Coral Springs Tournaments the U9 Girls won their first final in the World Cup Championship and in thrilling fashion.

The final went into a shootout. The score remained tied until the last try went all side netting for Select! The U9 goalie for SelectU9 Girls stopped two tries in the shootout. This after a sensational performance that included one of those “I still don’t know how it happened” swinging twisty backhanded rejection of a sure goal.

Everyone on the team had something to do with this first win. Whether at practice or in games each of you strives to improve and that has allowed all of us to improve. Thank you for all your efforts. Our goal towards developing a full sided 11v11 team is well underway.

Next in our schedule is a bit off-sided play as we participate in a combination of 5v5 and 3v3 competitions. In preparation we will be concentrating on quick transitions, and our first and second defender skills. Once again congratulations to the players and their parents.

Coach Zureida Molina Julio

U13 Girls Final 16 in State Cup
u13 state cup

Congratulations to our U-13 girls team which became the first Fort Lauderdale Select team to advance to the round of 16 in the State Championship Tournament.  The girls had a great game against Space Coast #3 in state) in the semi final round before falling 2-1.

There are over 200 teams that play competitive soccer in each age group and advancing to the final 16 in the state is a great achievement. The U-13 girls went undefeated in six games in the first two rounds of the tournament and only gave up 3 goals during their impressive run to the round of 16.  This is only the second year we had teams that were old enough to play in the State Cup and to have a team make it to the final 16 while competing against the biggest programs in the state is something all of the coaches, and players in the club should be very proud of.

Tuesday, March 1
u12 girls make Regions Cup Semifinals

Congrats to the the U-12 girls and Coach Gruber on this past weekend’s Regions Cup wins and advancing to the Regions Cup semi-finals.

It’s an amazing accomplishment on a couple of levels. One, it’s the first Fort Lauderdale Select team to make it to a Regions Cup Semi-finals in the Premier Division.   Secondly, it means the girls are one of the top 16 teams in the state out of over 150  U-12 teams in the state.

And lastly, our team is completely home grown. Every girl on this team came up through Fort Lauderdale Select, in fact the majority of the kids attend local schools, and almost all of them played in the holiday park rec league.  Other programs have kids from many area (Coral Springs, Cooper City, Pembroke Pines, and Plantation) playing for them.  Many of their best players switched clubs to play for a better team. They are getting better by adding top players from other clubs while Fort Lauderdale Select is getting better by challenging the same players to take it to the next level each year. It’s an unusual dynamic, and makes it all the more enjoyable when we continue to compete well with them.
