Another memorable season for Lanier County
Bulldogs went 22-10, made it to state quarterfinals
By Christian Malone
The Valdosta Daily Times
LAKELAND — Lanier County’s baseball team was disappointed with Tuesday night’s outcome. But the Bulldogs are pleased with a a season where they won 22 games and made it to the state quarterfinals for the second time in four years.
The Bulldogs’ season ended Tuesday night with losses to Landmark Christian School in the Class A state quarterfinals. The War Eagles, who are 24-6 and ranked No. 4 in Class A, won the first game 16-6, then completed the sweep with an 11-4 win in a rain-delayed game 2.
“We gave them too many outs, and we didn’t get any breaks,” Lanier head coach John White said. “Landmark Christian has a good baseball team. They were the better team that day.”
Lanier ends its season with a 22-10 overall record and ranked #7 in the final state coaches poll.
“I’m proud of this team,” White said. “They had a good year. They exceeded the expectations we set for them.”
This was a special group for White. The Bulldogs were led by their 10 seniors, most of whom played baseball all four years at Lanier. Some had been playing for White even longer.
“This was a good group of kids,” White said. “These kids played hard and just got after it, and we had a good year.”
The Bulldogs were led by their three All-State players, catcher Ethan McRae, pitcher Nathan Bass and shortstop/pitcher Ryan White. White has already signed a baseball scholarship with Carson-Newman, a strong Division II school, while McRae and Bass are expected to sign with schools in the next few weeks.
The Bulldogs rebounded from a rough start earlier in the season, when injuries hurt the team. They lost four of their first six games, and even 16 games into the season, they were just 10-6. But after an 8-5 loss to Appling County on April 10, they were almost unbeatable for the next five weeks, going on a nine-game winning streak that lasted until the second round of the playoffs. They won their first Region 1-A title since 1984.
“I’m ecstatic about how we finished,” Coach White said. “We were (10-6) at one point. Bass was hurt, and we weren’t sure if we’d get him back. But we got him back and started playing well. To win the region and make the elite eight is great.”
In game 1 against Landmark, Bass went 2-for-3 and hit a three-run homer for the Bulldogs, but took the loss on the mound. Josh Fender hit a two-run homer for LCHS. Lanier fell behind 4-0 in the third inning of game 2, then heavy rains delayed the game for almost three hours. The field was not in great shape, but the umpires insisted the field was playable, so the game resumed at ten o' clock that night. But despite Lanier cutting the deficit to 7-4, Landmark scored four late runs to pull away and win.
“The first game, they just pounded us,” Coach White said. “The second game, our kids gave a good effort trying to battle back, but we just couldn’t pull it out.”
Jordan Patten was 3-for-3 for the Bulldogs in game 2. Ryan White, Bass and McRae each went 2-for-4. White pitched a complete game, and struck out nine batters.

Lanier County improves to (14-4 oveall, 10-3 region) with the win.

LAKELAND - Lanier County defeated Clinch County Monday night, 11-3 at Threatte Field. The Bulldogs improved to 19-5 overall with the win, and 14-3 in Region 1-A. Lanier scored three runs in the bottom of the first, and held on for the win. The bottom of the first started with Ryan White singling and stealing second, then Milton Gloster following with an RBI single, making it 1-1. Greg Sealey and Ryan Allen walked, then two outs later, Johnny Hunt and Josh Fender drew bases-loaded walks, and Gloster and Sealey crossed the plate to make it 3-1. In the bottom of the second, Gloster drew a one-out walk, stole second, advanced on an error and scored on a wild pitch, making it 4-1. Clinch came back with a run in the top of the fourth, making it 4-2. Lanier broke the game open in the bottom of the fourth, scoring five times. The inning started with a Ryan White double. Then an error allowed White to score. Singles by Sealey and Allen loaded the bases. Then a bunt single by Nathan Bass scored a run. Sealey scored on a wild pitch, then Ethan McRae’s RBI single made it 8-2. The final run of the inning scored on Hunt’s RBI single. The Bulldogs tacked on one final run in the fifth. With one out, Allen beat out an infield single, then stole second and third. Walks to Bass and McRae loaded the bases, then after a pitching change, a bases-loaded walk scored Allen and made it 10-2. Clinch managed to put a run on the board in the sixth. Davis and Huelsnitz started the inning with singles, then Davis scored on Smith’s fielder’s choice. Clinch had taken an early 1-0 lead with a first-inning run. Williams struck out to start the game, but reached base when the third strike got away. He later scored on Davis’ groundout. For Lanier, White, McRae, Allen and Gloster had two hits apiece. Bass picked up the win, improving to 7-1. “We didn’t play as well as we could have tonight,” White said. “We’re going to have to do some things better in the playoffs." (Christian Malone - Valdosta Daily Times).
Lanier knocks off Turner County, 4-3
LAKELAND - #10 Lanier County came from behind to defeat Turner County, 4-3. The Rebels came into the game with a (14-1) region record, a ten game win streak, and region championship on the line, but it all came to an end as the Bulldogs came away with a hard fought win Thursday nite in Lakeland. Bulldog starter, Ryan Allen (6-3) was almost perfect through seven innings as he only allowed 3 hits, struckout 9 and gave up 1 earned run. That one run came off a controversial homerun as the home plate umpire ruled an obvious ground rule double, a homerun in the top of the 2nd inning, to put Turner up 1-0. Lanier had a couple of chances to score in the first two innings as well, but left the bases loaded each inning. In the 3rd, Lanier struck for 3 runs on big hits from Codey Fricke and Milton Gloster. Ryan White also drove in a run on a fielder's choice. Lanier missed another opportunity in the 4th to score as Lanier's Josh Fender was thrown out at the plate on a very close play. In the 5th, Lanier made several base running mistakes to end another Bulldog rally. Turner tied the game at 3-3 on back to back errors with two outs. Lanier County started of bottom of the bottom of the 7th inning with three consecutive singles from Josh Fender, Codey Fricke and Milton Gloster, to load up the bases. Ryan White manufactured the game winning RBI walk to give Lanier the win. Offensively, Codey Fricke and Johnny Hunt led the Bulldogs at the plate, each having 2 hits apiece in the game. Lanier County improves to (18-5 overall, 13-3 region) and tied for second place in the region with the win.
Bulldogs stumble at Turner County, 5-4
ASHBURN - #8 Lanier County's nine game win streak was snapped with a 5-4 loss at Turner County. Turner jumped out to a 1-0 lead in the 2nd when Greg Sealey committed two costly errors. Lanier came roaring back in the next inning to go up 3-1 after Johnny Hunt singled and drove in an RBI. With two outs, Milton Gloster drove in Hunt with another RBI single to right center field. Ryan White walked and scored after a balk was called on Turner's pitcher. Ethan Mcrae ended the inning with a liner to secondbase. In the 3rd, starter Nathan Bass drew some bad luck as the Rebels hit three back to back bloop singles to give Turner County on top 5-3. Relievers Ryan White and Ryan Allen combined to hold the Rebels scoreless to keep Lanier's hopes alive. The Bulldogs struck back in the 6th, as Ryan Allen singled in a run to cut the lead to 5-4. Nathan Bass reached on a walk, moving Allen to third base. Wayne Palmer hit a sharp ground ball to third base, but Allen was thrown out at the plate on a very close play. Lanier failed to score again, leaving the bases loaded to end the inning. Offensively, Ryan Allen and Johnny Hunt both collected two hits apiece for the Bulldogs. Coach White states, "We made a couple of costly mistakes on the bases. We didn't get a few bunts down and we made more errors than usual tonight, and it was the difference in the game. If we get a bunt down in the 6th, we tie and possibly win the game. We just didn't play very well all around." Lanier County falls to (12-3 overall, 9-2 region).
Lanier County tops Pirates, 2-1
LAKELAND - #8 ranked Lanier County improved their record to (12-2 overall, 9-1 region) with a 2-1 win over Miller County. The Bulldogs rode the three hit pitching performance from starter Ryan Allen (4-2) and reliever Ryan White, as Lanier came away with a region win. Things started off rocky for Allen in the 1st inning when a Miller batter check swung and blooped a double down the right field line. After a pass ball and a sacrafice fly ball to center field, the Pirates took a 1-0 lead. Allen allowed 2 hits in his 4 innings of work, and struck out 4 batters. Reliever, Ryan White came on in the 5th and held the Pirates scoreless through the last 3 innings, as he struck out 6 batters, and give up 1 hit in the save. Offensively, the Bulldogs left way to many runners in scoring position. We went ahead 2-1 in the 2nd inning on an RBI by Jordan Patten. Lanier only had a total of 6 hits on the afternoon. Ryan White picked up two of them, going 2-for-3 with a double.

The Rebels took an early 1-0 lead in the 1st inning as Ryan Allen walked the leadoff batter and gave up shallow hit to right field. Atkinson scored again in the 2nd, as a Harper reached on a fielder's choice and scored on a two out single by Clement. In the 3rd inning, Allen gave up a double to start the inning. Ryan White came on to pitch in relief and threw Harper third base on a bunt down the line. A pinch runner for Atkinson stole second, went to third on a pass ball and scored on a wild pitch, putting the Rebels up 3-0. In the 5th inning, Greg Sealey lead off with a gapper to left center field for a single. Ryan Allen followed with hit a hard line drive to shortstop, which double up Greg Sealey at second base. Pinch hitter, Josh Fender hit a towering fly ball to left field that was caught at the fence. The Bulldogs finally put some runs on the board in the 6th inning as Ryan White singled in two runs. Jordan Patten drew a leadoff walk and Milton Gloster was hit by a pitch, setting up White's basehit to cut the lead to 3-2. Greg Sealey hit another hard line drive and Ethan Mcrae grounded to a double play to end the inning. Lanier had another shot in the 7th inning to pull out the win. Ryan Allen lead off the inning with a single. He stole second and third base. Johnny Hunt walked a batter later. The game ended as Lanier's final two batters struckout. | view full size |
FOR THE GAME , NEWMANS HAD 2 HITS FOR ATCO AND DEREK WHITE HAD A DOUBLE WITH A WALK FOR LANIER. BOTH TEAMS PLAYED SOME UGLY BASEBALL AT TIMES.
ATCO JUST DID A BETTER JOB OF PUTTING TOGETHER THE BIG INNING. I WAS HAPPY WITH OUR PLAY FROM THE 2ND THROUGH THE 6TH, BUT WE HAVE SOME GUYS WHO LAID DOWN WHEN THE GAME WAS ON THE LINE. WE DID SOME GOOD THINGS THAT WE CAN BUILD ON . I DONT KNOW HOW TO ANSWER THE HUSTLE PART AND MENTAL STUFF WE DO SOMETIMES. WE HAD TO DISCIPLINE OUR 2 SENIORS DURING THE GAME BECAUSE OF THEIR LACK OF HUSTLE AND IT CAME BACK TO BEAT US WHEN LUCKIE TIRED LATE IN THE GAME.HATS OFF TO ATCO AND KEEP WORKING HARD.

PELHAM SLIPS BY DAWGS 4-2
PELHAM'S D.J.JACKSON PITCHED A COMPLETE GAME 3 HITTER STRIKING OUT 14 AS LANIER LOST ITS REGION OPENER TO THE MUCH IMPROVED HORNETS(6-0). SENIOR ANDREW JOHNSON PITCHED WELL ALLOWING JUST 5 HITS, 3 BLOOP SINGLES IN THE FIRST ALONG WITH 2 WALKS ALLOWED PELHAM TO GO UP 2-0. LANIER CUT THE LEAD TO 2-1 IN THE 2ND WHEN DEREK WHITE SINGLED , STOLE 2ND AND SCORED ON A DOUBLE STEAL.LANIER
HAD A CHANCE TO TIE IN THE 3RD, BUT A KEY BASERUNNING ERROR BY DEREK EUBANKS DENIED THE DAWGS. PELHAM BROKE THE GAME OPEN IN THE 5TH WHEN LANIER'S RF MISPLAYED A BALL AND D.J.JACKSON LATER DOUBLED WITH 2 0UTS. LANIER RALLIED LATE AS DEREK EUBANKS SINGLE AND SCORED ON SYLVESTOR WEST'S TRIPLE OFF THE RIGHTFIELD FENCE.
OVERALL WE PLAYED WELL.BUT WE LEFT 3 RUNNERS STRANDED AT THIRD THAT COULD HAVE MADE DIFFERENCE. OUR THREE SENIORS ARE STRUGGLING AT THE PLATE WITH 4 HITS AMONG THEM IN 5 GAMES. THE ATTITUDE SEEMS TO BE BETTER SINCE WE DISMISSED 2 OF OUR BETTER PLAYERS FOR DISCIPLINE REASONS. IF WE CAN EVER GET THESE GUYS TO PLAY TOGETHER, WE COULD BE PRETTY DECENT.
PELHAM HAS DEFEATED REGION1-A LEADER SCHLEY 2 TIMES,BEAT MITCHELL BAKER, CALHOUN CO.,ECHOLS AND US. THEY WON 4 GAMES LAST YEAR SO THEY ARE A LOT BETTER THAN LAST YEAR.
