LOSC Hurricanes Win GRFC Winter Classic Tournament!

The Lake Oswego Hurricanes, a club soccer girls team comprised of high school sophomores, defeated the Spokane Shadow 3-2 on penalty kicks to claim the U16 Premier Division championship of the GRFC Winter Classic Tournament, held over the Jan. 15th-18th Martin Luther King holiday weekend.

The tournament featured 172 boys and girls teams from Wahington and Oregon and was played on multiple turf fields a the Starfire Sports complex in Tukwila, Wash. and other venues throughout the Renton, Wash. area.

The Hurricanes went 4-1-0 over the weekend, losing only to the Federal Way FC Reign 1-0 in their first game before reeling off consecutive wins against teams from North Seattle (Legacy FC), Vancouver (Washington Soccer Academy, formerly FC Vancouver), and the Tri-Cities (Three Rivers SC) before meeting the very powerful '93 Navy Shadow in the finals.

The Shadow is one of the better teams in the Premier Developmental League (PDL), the highest level of league play for soccer teams in Washington state.

Jessica Rogers led a strong Hurricanes offense with four goals over the weekend, with additional goals being scored by Katie Stoner and Jordan McLaughlin, who also had three assists.

Getting to the finals however , was largely due to the Hurricanes' tough defense, which gave up only one goal all weekend.

Inspired by goalkeeper Brooklyn Muller, who made six saves in the final game and stopped two penalty kicks in the shootout of the championship to seal the win, the defense physically frustrated opponents and continually won the ball back for Hurricanes midfielders and forwards to keep possession or start counter attacks.

The Hurricanes are coached by Nick Schwartz and BreAnne Ellis, and include players from 11 different High Schools, including Oregon Episcopal School, St. Mary's Academy, and Jesuit, Central Catholic, Lakeridge, Lake Oswego, Tigard, Tualatin, Wilson, West Salem, and North Salem High Schools.
