As Segrist prepared to take the circle for every inning this season, however, she was still bothered by nagging shoulder soreness she developed over the winter. She pressed on, and last Wednesday, she looked just fine, throwing a complete game two-hitter in a 1-0 victory over previously undefeated Howard. “She was really anxious to see if she could get a chance to throw a lot this season,” Glenelg Coach Dean Sheridan said, “A game like Howard makes it hurt a lot less.” Sheridan was pretty sure his team — which features five freshmen and four sophomores — would not begin the season like the 2010 team that carried a 19-game winning streak to the 2A semifinal. Sure enough, the Gladiators split their first four games, losing those that Sheridan called “winnable in May, but not in March,” explaining how his team needed to mature. Yet against Howard, Glenelg might have crossed that threshold. In the top of the sixth inning, sophomore shortstop Leah Allen, a player “fast enough to play Division I” softball, hit a triple. Senior Kayleigh Shaul followed with a suicide squeeze bunt. Howard tried to get Allen at home, but she beat the throw for what proved to be the game’s lone run. “Playing a game like that can really change a team,” Sheridan said. “I hope it showed us something.” Sheridan said he is still trying to reschedule the Gladiators’ game with No. 8 Chesapeake. It was rained out for the second time this season last Saturday, and with both teams needing to reschedule games (Glenelg has doubleheaders scheduled later this month with Mount Hebron and Long Reach), it may be difficult to get that game in.
Friday, April 8 Glenelg & Leah Allen Knock off undefeated #4 Howard 1-0 Glenelg 1, Howard 0Leah Allen went 3-for-3, including two triples as Glenelg defeated Howard, 1-0. It is the Lions' first loss of the season Wednesday afternoon. Allen led off the top of the fifth inning with a triple to right center. She later scored on a suicide squeeze for the only run of the game. These were pivotal moments in a well-played competitive game between two rivals. Sophie Giaquinto, Bishop O’Connell (Arlington, Va.)
Giaquinto has been one of the main reasons that Bishop O’Connell has started 4-0 and should move up from the No. 41 position in the next POWERADE FAB 50. In those first four games, the senior catcher had three homers and 17 RBIs. In the team’s very first game, a 28-0 romp past St. John’s (Washington, D.C.), Giaquinto drove in 10 runs and hit two homers. She also is a top scholar-athlete who will be headed to Cornell in the fall. When she was in junior high, Giaquinto was on a Softball Little League World Series championship team and visited the White House.
Oh yeah! she plays for the Lady Orioles Gold too!
