LadyHawks: Ladyhawk History
LadyHawks

In the Beginning
Lizards 2000

The Ladyhawks began their history as the U-10 LaPlata Lizards of the LPYSA (LaPlata Youth Soccer Association).  The Lizards were the first all female club assembled by the LPYSA.  At the time, all teams in the LPYSA were coed.  However, when the LPYSA and the WSC (Waldorf Soccer Club) entered into agreement to begin inter-league play, provisions were made to conform to the WSC policy of all male or female teams.  The Head Coach then, as now is Dennis Stansbury.

Sporting their new lime green jerseys, inter-league play began in the spring of 2000.  All games were played on the WSC Bryantown fields.  In spite of playing all road games, the Lizards played outstanding and unselfish team ball.  Built with defense in mind, the Lizards also possessed excellent team speed and a quick striking offense.  The Lizards tore through the league and entered the championship game undefeated.

The Championship game matched the Lizards against the undefeated WSC Jaguars.  In the game itself, the Lizards scored a goal in the first half and the Jaguars tied the score mid-way through the second half.  On a brutally hot June afternoon, with both teams totally spent, the Lizards scored the go-ahead goal with under two minutes remaining in the contest to claim their first championship.

Season 2 - Back to the LPYSA
Pumpkins 2000

Following their Championship Spring campaign, inter league play was suspended for the fall 2000 season.  This left the Lizards with the choice of disbanding or going coed.  The choice was a simple one, they decided to pick up three boys in order to qualify for league play.  Additionally, since it is the league policy to rotate jersey colors each season, we lost our lime green  jerseys.  As a result, a vote was taken by the girls and the decision was made to drop the Lizard name until such time that they became an all girls team again.  Unfortunately for the girls, they were assigned bright orange jerseys for the fall season.  Since it was the fall and they were stuck with orange, they opted for the name The Killer Pumpkins.

Obviously, it appeared that the deck was stacked against the Pumpkins since they were competing against predominantly male teams.  However, the key to winning, as usual, is hard work and teamwork.  As a result, in what might have been a more satisfying season than the spring, they compiled a record of 6-1-1 and won the league championship for the fall season.

Season 3 - Ladyhawk Name Adopted
Ladyhawks Spring 2001

In the spring of 2001, once again we underwent a uniform and name change.  That season, the league issued us white jerseys with red numbers.  We as a team purchased blue shorts and thus our signature RED, WHITE & BLUE colors were established.  The ladies also voted to adopt the name Ladyhawks, the name which we still proudly carry today.

In the spring 2001 season, the LPYSA reverted back to male and female teams and established inter league play with the SMYO (Southern Maryland Youth Organization).  In what was to be our final season as a rec team, the Ladyhawks battled to a second place finish when we lost our final game on a penalty kick in the final minutes.

Although Coach Stansbury did his best to maintain his core of girls through the first three seasons, it was becoming increasingly difficult since the league was mandating a complete draft of all players prior to the next season.  In order to avoid being disbanded, the team voted to go select and enter the MPSL (Maryland Premiere Soccer League) for the Fall 2001 season.

While the Ladyhawks and their coaching staff did everything they could to prepare for their MPSL debut, it quickly became evident that much work remained to be done.  The Ladyhawks added to their roster, obtained sponsors, purchased new uniforms and even acquired rights to our logo, graciously provided to us by the Cincinnati Ladyhawks.  However, we were not prepared for the consistently high level of competition.  As a result, the Ladyhawks endured their first winless season.

Despite failing to win a game, there were many positive developments to build upon.  The Ladyhawks did manage 3 ties and did not lose any game by more than one goal.  Built with defense in mind, their tenacious defense and physical style of play kept them in every game.

"A person is not finished when they are defeated.  They are finished when they quit."  The Ladyhawks may have been defeated but they NEVER quit and were far from finished.  With so much to build upon, the Ladyhawks immediately set out to correct their deficiencies and eagerly awaited their next campaign.

Spring 2002 through Fall 2004 Ladyhawks continue to improve but still search for scoring.
Ladyhawks Spring 2004
2004 Ladyhawks

Over the next several seasons, the Ladyhawks continued to steadily improve.  Early in the spring 2002 campaign the Ladyhawks recorded their first victory as a select team.  However throughout this period of time, their lack of consistent scoring resulted in an inordinate number of ties. While the Ladyhawks did not lose often, they didn't win as often as they should have either, considering their defensive efforts.

While remaining a close knit family, the Ladyhawks also developed a reputation as a tough and physical team.  Opposing teams could count on a physically demanding game when playing the Ladyhawks, usually feeling the effects well into the next week.  Always an outstanding defensive club, the Ladyhawks were perennially ranked as one of the league leaders in fewest goals allowed.  Still the Ladyhawks were missing a key ingredient and continually searched for that elusive scoring combination that would propel then back to the top.

2005 - Bringing the Ladyhawks Full Circle
Ladyhawks Team Fall 05
Ladyhawks Fall 05

As the calendar year turned to 2005, the Ladyhawks hopes spring eternal.  When the Ladyhawks awoke from their long winters nap, they discovered the missing ingredients on offense.  Those key ingredients were maturity, patience and teamwork.

During the spring campaign, the Ladyhawks finally found the scoring touch.  Their newly discovered offense, coupled with their always stingy defense allowed them to either win or tie all but one their games.  Unfortunately, the 2-1 loss occurred during a rare rescheduled Saturday contest in which the Ladyhawks were unable to muster a complete team due to prior commitments.

That single loss doomed the Ladyhawks to a second place finish in the MPSL.  Disappointed but not dejected, the Ladyhawks once again set their sights on the rapidly approaching Fall season.

Fall 2005

Determined to finally complete the circle, the Ladyhawks hit the ground running and never looked back.  Enjoying a perfect fall season, the Ladyhawks averaged over 3 goals per game, while only allowing one goal scored against their defense in the entire season.

At last, the Ladyhawks had finally claimed the title that had barely eluded them the previous two seasons.  Perched alone atop the MPSL,  the Ladyhawks began setting their sights on new challenges.  Those challenges would be found in the Washington Area Girls Soccer League.  WAGS.

Excellence is the Gradual Result of Always Striving to do Better!
6 Ladyhawks team
Ready to GO!

Throughout the first six years of their existence, the Ladyhawks have remained a close knit family.  Clearly, the Ladyhawks have been one of the most successful and enduring girls teams in Southern Maryland.  Many of the girls from our 2006 squad have been with us for several years.  From the original LaPlata Lizards team that claimed the WSC Championship in the spring of 2000; three of those girls remain with our squad today.

It has been said that: "We are what we repeatedly do. Excellence, then, is not an act, but a habit."  Excellence is the gradual result of always striving to do better.

Throughout the years, the Ladyhawk coaches have always been EXTREMELY PROUD of all our girls for their tenacity and willingness to step up to a challenge and never back down.
Through the good times, tough times, three championship seasons and all 6 years of existence, the Ladyhawks have always displayed an attitude of never accepting anything less than giving their ALL.  Proving that success is a journey, not a destination.
