What equipment does my child need to play soccer?
The only REQUIRED equipment for soccer is a pair of shin guards. Also, all shin guards must be COVERED by the child's socks. Additional recommended equipment includes soccer cleats to avoid slips and falls, and a mouth guard.
What equipment or clothing is NOT PERMITTED?
Baseball cleats, including baseball cleats that have been modified by cutting off the toe cleat, are PROHIBITED by the United States Soccer Federation and FIFA. As an affiliated organization, we must abide by their rules or risk the loss of insurance coverage. Also, no jewelry or loose articles of clothing are permitted. All of these items are considered to be dangerous, or increase the risk of injury. Medic Alert bracelets and religious jewelry may be worn IF taped securely to the body so it does not dangle.
At what age can my child start playing organized soccer?
LYSA provides programs for children starting at age FIVE (5). For most age levels, a child will be placed in one of our various age divisions based on their age as of August 1. If a child has not attained age five (5) by August 1, then they may not participate in any fall activities. If a child attains five years of age by March 1, then they may be able to participate in our spring program.
Can my child "play up" in a higher age division?
Yes, a child may play in the NEXT HIGHER age division one of two ways. FIRST, a child may play up for another team they are not rostered to through the use of a "guest pass." Through the use of a guest pass, a child may play up to three games for EACH team in the next higher age division. SECOND, a child may REGISTER to play in one age division higher than the one normally based on their birth date, provided they do so in the fall. As an exception, children under the age of six (6) may not register for a higher age division when a U-6 program is offered.
Can my child change age divisions after the fall season?
NO. Teams are rostered based on ability, with an ATTEMPT to maintain parity within each age division. These teams are generally rostered for an entire year (two seasons). The initial registration also places your child for age group purposes on the records of our State Association, OYSAN. Therefore, a child registered in one age division in the fall, can re-register in a higher aged division in the spring. They can, however, play with the higher age division teams through the use of a guest pass (provided they continue to play with their rostered team).
When will I find out which team my child is playing with?
Due to the intensive paperwork associated with registration, including a requirement that we forward our registrations and team assignements to our State Organization for insurance purposes, it is TYPICAL that three (3) to four (4) weeks will pass FOLLOWING registration before the team rosters are completed and distributed to coaches. Also, if we lack a sufficient number of coaches for our teams, notification may be further delayed until a coach can be secured for your child's team. Typically, coaches meet and receive their rosters approximately three weeks after the close of registration. The coaches are then expected to contact their team members and advise their players when and where the first practices will be held.
As a general rule, you should find out what team your child is playing on no later than the third week of August and/or the third week of March each year.

Where can I find materials on soccer?
The Loudonville Public Library has, for several years now, had a fairly good book on coaching available for circulation.
In the spring of 2003, two copies of the US Youth Soccer official coaching manual, a copy of a youth coaching video, and a USSF rules video entitled "Myths of the Game" were all donated to the Public Library for circulation. Please ask the library staff to assist you in locating these materials. If you are new to soccer, a new coach, or parent-fan, the "Myths of the Game" video is a very good overview of some often confused rules.
Another good source for materials for new coaches is the internet - just do a word search using "soccer drills." Also, Ohio Youth Soccer Association-North has a coaches link with many articles and information. Finally, more information can be obtained on this website at our "Coaching Tips" link at the left, or through our Web Links, which will give you a link to OYSAN.
