Freshman Dominate Suburban League!!!!
It's been awhile so here is one BIG recap for Freshman Matadores. In Tommy Zurn's final season as head coach for the Freshman squad, the young Mats took to league with one mission....win Suburban League Title. Along the way the Mats started to gel as a unit and they got on a roll, to say the least. Behind solid pitching from Tyler Charlton, Joe Montoya, Ernie Guzman, Brian Sholty and excellent bullpen work from Zach Albers, Jake Fox and Ryan Edwards; the Mats consistently held down Bellflower, Norwalk and Mayfair. And when I say held down, I'm talking about 124 runs scored to 37 runs given up over 14 games. With power surges from Sholty (2 homeruns) and Kyle Hotarek (1 HR) and timely hitting from Nicko Carrasco, Nicholas Salazar, Jordan Gutierrez, JT Bale, Ryan Ponce De Leon, Kristian Puga, Sebastian Avalos and Luis Fajardo mounted to such an offensive display against league rivals. Let us not forget our excellent defense which all year help/bailed out our pitching; Jacob Sawyer, Johnny Rivera, Steven Castro and Jorge Menendez and the whole team which lead the young Mats to a PERFECT 14--0 record in league play and are champions of the Suburban league. After it is all said and done, these young men played the game they way they were coached/taught to by Tommy Zurn. The season was a success in so many ways and this next generation of ballplayers owe alot to Coach Zurn, so farewell and THANK YOU.
Thanks Coach Tommy.....

LM vs. Mayfair... Enough Said
All the preseason hype that favored Mayfair as the Suburban League's most title-ready baseball squad to dethrone perennial league champion La Mirada has been accurate. The Monsoons are 18-4 overall and 8-0 in league play, including a sweep over Bellflower last week. But as the saying goes, "to be the man, you've got to beat the man," and the Monsoons face "the man" in a two-game series this week. They are at La Mirada Wednesday and then host the Matadores on Friday with a title possibly at stake. La Mirada (12-12, 6-2) dropped its series with Norwalk last month and put itself in an unfamiliar role of playing catch-up with Mayfair. In addition to all the drama in a championship week, the bitter rivals are meeting for the first time since last year's ugly scene at La Mirada that saw campus security escorting Mayfair to its bus. Longtime La Mirada skipper Kim Brooks and then first-year Mayfair coach Joe Magno accused the other of disrespectful behavior directed at each other's teams. But both men said they hope that is history and it's back to just baseball. "We're really hoping adults on both sides will act like adults and allow the kids to decide the outcome in a hard-played, but respectful way towards both programs," Magno said. "We have a lot of respect for the success La Mirada has had in this league and we know that to win a championship, you have to go through La Mirada to get it." The Matadores' Ali Anthony (5-3, 0.45 ERA) and either Cody Kruip (2-5, 3.08) or Austin Rojo (4-1, 1.66) will oppose Mayfair's Jordan Aboites (3-2, 0.80) and Greg Humbert (6-0, 1.29) in a battle of the league's two best pitching staffs. Humbert also leads the Suburban League with a .455 average and 30 hits. "The key to beating La Mirada is to jump on top early and not give them any chance to rally," Humbert said. "We are focused on being undefeated. On the mound, I have to get ahead early in the count and take control of the game, and give my defense chances to make plays. "We need to stay focused on winning and nothing else. If we stay within ourselves, we will come out with two victories and a league championship."
