La Mirada Girls Softball Association: FAQ's
| I have two daughters; can they be on the same team? | |
| Yes, providing they are the same age. If one is younger it is possible for her to move up to the older sister’s division, if requested and deemed safe by the coaches during evaluations.. | |
| I have a friend who wants to be on my daughter’s team for the purpose of carpooling. Is this possible? | |
| There is no guarantee that this can happen. Each girl is assessed and then drafted by the Managers. After the draft is complete, the Managers are informed of requests for ride sharing purposes. | |
| What do my registration fees go for? | |
| They are used for the uniforms (shirts, shorts & socks), umpire fees, picture package, insurance, trophies, etc. | |
| When does the season start and end? | |
| The season starts with practices during the month of February. Practices vary from one to three times per week during this period, depending on each individual manager. The season typically starts the last week of February or the first week of March and usually ends around the first of May. | |
| When are the practices and games? | |
| Once the season starts, a team typically plays two games a week, usually one game on Tuesday, Wednesday or Thursday night and another game on Saturday. If a team plays on Tuesday, then they usually will have practice on Thursday night. The times during the week will be during the hours of about 5 p.m. to 9p.m. and on Saturday from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. | |
| Where are the games and practices? | |
| Spring Ball games will be played at Behringer Park, located on Alicante and Hilsborough. Practices may be held at a City Park or a local school selected by the Managers. | |
| Do you need volunteers? | |
| Yes, we are always in need of volunteers. Only volunteers run the league and the burden gets heavy on some that are doing more than their share. We can always use volunteers to work the snack bar, help with fundraisers, help the team managers and assist during the League’s Annual Tournament. There are usually Board of Directors positions opened. For more info, call or e-mail us. | |
| Do I need to stay at practices? | |
| You should stay and support the manager and coaches and be there for your child. If you can’t, then please be prompt in picking up your child after practice. Remember the managers and coaches are volunteers that are giving up a lot of time during the week at practices and games and are not here to be baby sitters. Parents of those in the 6 & Under and 8 & Under divisions should try extra hard to stay during the practice. | |
| How can I find out the rules for softball? | |
| A copy of the ASA Rules is given to each manager at the beginning of the season. Ask to borrow his book. The league is only given a limited number so there are no extras. The league rules can be found elsewhere on this web site. | |
| When is the General Membership Meeting? | |
| They are normally held around June and January. All parents should attend. | |
| How are problems resolved? | |
| All problems are resolved through the chain of command process. The first in line to discuss any problem is the manager, followed by the division commissioner and then with the player agent. If all these avenues are exhausted, then it is appropriate to contact the Vice President or the President. | |
| Who do I call in regards to umpires? | |
| If there is a problem that you think needs attention regarding the umpiring, then you should contact the League’s Umpire-in-Chief. | |
| Why do the teams need sponsors and what is the money used for? | |
| The registration fees, charged at the beginning of the year, barely cover the basic needs of a player. Money is needed for visors, end of the season parties, etc. | |
| Are there any other ways the league receives money? | |
| Yes, you will be asked to participate in a fundraiser during the season. This might consist of selling candy or other items. Please help us help your child by cooperating with the fundraising program. | |
QUESTIONS CONCERNING SNACK BAR DUTY:
| Who works in the snack bar? | |
| Every family is required to provide a worker for at least 1 snack bar shift per player. Your child's team will be assigned a snack bar date(s) prior to the start of the season. Your team parent or snack bar coordinator will assign times and shifts, to fill your team's league assigned obligations. | |
| But do coaches, team moms, scorekeepers & board members have to work, too? | |
|
Yes, unless they arrange to buy out for their shift. |
|
| How long is a typical snack bar shift? | |
| Approximately 2 to 4 hours, depending on the day and schedule for that day. | |
| I don't have a sitter. Can I bring my kids with me during my snack bar shift? | |
| Not if they will be under your supervision. Only workers will be allowed in the snack bar area. Please make appropriate arrangements before your snack bar shift. | |
| What if it rains on the day of or during my shift? | |
| The same rainout procedures apply for snack bar duty as for games. If your snack bar shift is cancelled or cut short due to rain, you probably will be rescheduled for a future date. The Snack Bar Director will contact your team coordinator if your team is rescheduled. |
