Cowboys vs Granada (May 8, 2009)

Disheartened Livermore Boys' Varsity Lacrosse Team Fall to Granada By a Score of 8 - 6.

The game started with a moment of silence honoring Tommy Parker's dad, Stephen Parker, who had passed away earlier this week.

There was no score after one quarter. In the second quarter Granada scored first. Then Tommy Parker tied the score at one all, assisted by Marc Acosta. Parker's second goal, again assisted by Acosta, put the Cowboys ahead 2 - 1. Granada came back and scored the next two goals to take the lead.

With seconds left in the first half, as Parker was going in to score again, a cheap, illegal cross-check in the face put Parker down. The Granada defender who delivered the blow smart mouthed over him, and received only a two minute penalty. Once again, bad officiating cost Livermore, not only the game, but also put Tommy out of the game.

Granada scored two goals in the third quarter and took a 5 -2 lead. Going into the fourth quarter, Granada scored first, making it a 6 -2 game. Then Livermore tied the score with four unanswered goals in the fourth quarter. Ben Jacobson had two goals; Vince VanBinsbergen and Paul Warnke had the other two. Assists were scored by Acosta (who had two), Kyle Kline, and Jacobson. Eventually Granada scored two to take the lead and the win. Gavin Herr had 30 saves in the loss.

This was the Boys' Varsity Lacrosse team's best year yet, finishing with a 5 - 13 record. Attacking players for the year were Marc Acosta, Jerrod Martinez, Eric Loberg, and Tommy Parker. Middies for the year were Ben Jacobson, Harrison Wood, Paul Warnke, Nathan Loberg, Brian Hicks, Vincent VanBinsbergen, Kyle Kline, Matt Holzschuh, and Andrew Finster, and long-stick-middies Travis Cyronek, Ryan Wilkerson, and Jon Yoon. Defensive players for the year were Ryan Stark, Chris Hill, Rusty Schmidt, Craig Cofer, and Joe Gonzalez . The goalie was Gavin Herr. Head Coach Gordon Cobb, Assistant Coach John Hill, and Assistant Coach Austin Silva are very pleased with how all of the players played this year.

The EBAL league with five teams in the playoffs, is not only the toughest league in the Bay Area, but the toughest in California. All .parents, players, and Livermore Varsity Team supporters should be proud of this team for the skill and spirit they have shown this year -- and for all who stand behind the Team.

Comeback Victory Propels Livermore JV Over Granada 6 - 5

The Livermore J.V Boys' Lacrosse team came back from 3 goals down to defeat Granada 6 - 5.

As they have done all year, the Livermore team would get down by as many as four goals and would fight back. This time it was a stunning victory for the Boys' Lacrosse team. Granada had a 1 - 0 lead after the first quarter. In the second quarter, Livermore was down 3 - 0 when Stan Steeper's goal assisted by Jr. McCammon brought the score to 3 - 1. A Granada goal with 8 seconds left in the half made it 4 - 1. Livermore scored the next two goals to make it 4 - 3. Granada then scored and led 5 -3 after three quarters. Goals were by Steven Niessen and Daniel Rowan assisted by Cody Shubin and Keyon Taravati. Then the comeback began. Steeper scored assisted by Zach Pursch, then Pursch scored assisted by Rowan and the game was tied, 5 all. Finally, with 1:27 left in the game, Steven Niessen's winning goal, assisted by Shubin, brought the victory to the Cowboys.

This was a very successful season for the J.V. team with a 5 - 11 record. Attack players for the year were Stan Steeper, Zachary Pursch, Kyle (Jr.) McCammon, Cameron Locke, Jacob Cuellar, and Arek Medina. Middies were Joey Youngblood, Cody Shubin, Keyon Taravati, Steven Niessen, Daniel Rowan, Gary Chapeta, Michael Filyau, Scott Gragg, William Kaufman, Sam Burnett, Remington Fox, Kamron Abri, and Joe Munns. Defensive players were Aubrey Gott, Spencer Davidson, Tim Byrnes, Ian Ingram, Chris Alderson, and Michael Fischer. The goalie for the year was Steven Martinez. Coaches John, Darren, and Bill are very proud of all of the players who played with a lot of heart and never gave up.

Livermore Wine Country Festival Soda/Water Sales

Livermore High School Mens Lacrosse Fund Raiser

May 2nd and 3rd

The Livermore Mens' Lacrosse Teams handled soda/water sales for the festival. Half of the proceeds will go to the Lacrosse Program. Livermore Downtown Inc. handles the upfront costs of the booth, soda, and water. Profits will then be split. Last year, this activity netted $1800 for the team. Cool rainy weather dampened (pun intended) the crowds enthusiam for cold drinks and so we didn't nearly so well this year. The final reconning won't be know for a while.

We had a lot of volunteers and thanks are due to the adults and lacrosse players that came out and served the public. Their participation is greatly appreciated.

Lacrosse Banquet

We need two parents from each team to coordinate the Banquet for the end of the lacrosse season. The date is May 20th, a Wednesday, from 6 - 9 in the Student Union. Let Coach John Hill know if you are willing to volunteer.

Livermore vs California (5/1/2009)

Rain, Wind, Undermanned Cowboys fall at Cal

The Livermore Boys' Lacrosse team lost to Cal by a 17 - 3 score. Livermore played with only one defensive and one long stick middie substitution as many of the team did not show up for the game. The game was played in the wind and the rain as the many Livermore fans who braved the elements saw a one sided score. At half the score was Cal 9 Livermore 2. Goals were scored by Marc Acosta and Ben Jacobson assisted by Jacobson and Harrison Wood. Livermore's final goal was scored unassisted by Jerrod Martinez. Four goals were scored when Livermore was a man down. Gavin Herr had 14 saves in the loss.

Last second goal beat Cowboys

With two seconds to go, a goal beat the Livermore J.V Boys' Lacrosse team 9 - 8 vs. Cal in a rainy, dreary night. At the half, the Cowboys once again were down by a score of 6 - 3. Goals were scored by Joey Youngblood, Scott Gragg (his first) and Stan Steeper. Assists were by Gragg, Steven Niessen, and Jacob Cuellar. Livermore cut the scored to 7 -5 after three quarters.Goals were by Stan Steeper and Zach Pursch, with an assist from Steeper. Cal went ahead 8 - 5 with 9 minutes left in the game. Then Livermore stormed back to tie the score at 8 all with 1:30 left in the game. Goals were scored by Niessen, Pursch, and Dan Rowan with assists by Steeper and Gragg. With two seconds left and Cowboys all over a Cal attackman, he somehow scored the winning goal. As it has been all year for the Cowboys' they get themselves in a hole and will not go away and keep fighting back. Unfortunately this time, time ran out. Steven Martinez had 10 goals in the loss.

Livermore vs Monte Vista (4/28/2009)

Varsity loses to Monte Vista 13 - 1

Livermore lost to the Mustangs from Monte Vista Tuesday night by a score of 13 - 1. After 1 quarter the score was 2 -1 Monte Vista and it was all down hill from there. Led by Chris Hill, Ryan Stark, Rusty Schmidt, Craig Cofer and Joe Gonzalez. Gavin Herr stopped 18 shots in the loss.

De La Salle at Livermore (4/21/2009)

De La Salle defeats Livermore 14 - 1

The Livermore Boys' Lacrosse team faced the #2 ranked team in the state, the De La Salle Spartans, and came away with a 14 - 1 defeat. The Cowboys played a very inspired first half, keeping the Spartans to only 1 goal in the first quarter and a 5 - 0 deficit at the half. In the second quarter the lead grew to 4 - 1 on goals by Jacobson and Warnke assisted by Parker and Marc Acosta, but Granada scored to make the score 4 - 2 at the half. Granada came back with a goal but Acosta scored a goal assisted by Kyle Kline, making the score 5 - 3 going to the fourth quarter. Granada scored two goals, one on a man-up penalty with one minute left, to force the game into sudden-death overtime. In OT it didn't take Livermore long--exactly 29 seconds--for Jerrod Martinez's shot that hit the net for the thrilling OT win. The Livermore defense stepped up for most of the game led by Chris Hill, Ryan Stark, Rusty Schmidt, and Craig Cofer to stymie Granada. Gavin Herr had 8 saves in the game.

J.V. lose a heartbreaker

Livermore's J.V. team lost a tough one to Granada by the score of 6 - 5. At the half the score was 3 - 2 Granada. Livermore's goals were by Joey Youngblood and Zach Pursch assisted by Stan Steeper. Livermore was down by 5 - 2 when they started to come back. Goals by Stan Steeper and two goals by Zach Pursch tied the score at 5-5 going into the fourth quarter. Livermore's defense and Goalie Steven Martinez held Granada until three minutes were left in the game, at which time Granada scored the winning goal. Livermore had many chances, but 12 minutes in penalties had Livermore playing man down for basically a quarter of the game. Good defense was played by Aubrey Gott and Joe Gonzalez throughout the game. Steven Martinez had 12 saves in the loss.

Livermore vs Foothill (4/3/09)

Lackluster loss by Cowboys

The Varsity Lacrosse team had an uninspired loss against Foothill. Mustering only 10 shots, Livermore fell to Foothill 16 - 2. Livermore goals were by Tommy Parker and Marc Acosta. The lone assist was by Harrison Wood. Gavin Herr had 11 saves.

As was the case by the Varsity, the J.V. team lost to Foothill by a score of 12 - 1. The lone goal for Livermore was scored by Joey Yongblood. Steven Martinez had 12.

Livermore vs. California (March 31)

Varsity comes up short

Livermore Varsity Lacrosse lost to California by a score of 13 - 5. California took a 4 - 0 led after one quarter. Each team scored 1 in the second quarter; Livermore's goal was scored by Marc Acosta assisted by Tommy Parker. After 3 quarters Cal led 9 -2. Long, Long, Long Week for the Cowboys

The Varsity Lacrosse team had a long week against three EBAL powerhouse teams, Amador (3/24, currently ranked third), San Ramon (3/25, ranked second), and Monte Vista (3/27, ranked fourth), losing 13 - 4, 17 - 1, and 15 - 1. The Cowboys played a very good game against the Dons from Amador. Scoring for Livermore was Ben Jacobson with 2 goals and single goals by Tommy Parker and Marc Acosta. Acosta also had 2 assists and Jacobson had 1. Against SRV Ben Jacobson had the lone goal and Harrison Wood had the assist. Against Monte Vista, Marc Acosta had the lone goal. The defense played very well in this 3 game week, the goals against does not reflect how hard Chris Hill, Ryan Stark, Rusty Schmidt, Craig Cofer, and John Yoon played. Highlighted by stopping Monte Vista on a 3 minute penalty that was not releasable, that means that they could score as many as they wanted, yet the defense and goalie Gavin Herr stopped them. While many EBAL teams enjoy running up the score, Amador played with a lot of style by playing all of their players. Herr had 11, 6, and 22 saves respectably in the three games.

As with the Varsity, the J.V. team also had a long tough week. The Cowboys played Amador, SRV, and Monte Vista. Losing 12 - 0, 11 - 0 and 13 - 1. The one shining star for the 3 games was goalie Steven Martinez. He had 9, 18, and 14 saves in those three games. Again, as seen in the Varsity games, most EBAL teams enjoy running up the score. Amador came out and showed good sportsmanship and played their entire team.

Up next for the Cowboys are California and Foothill.

Cowboys beaten by De La Salle

On March 20th, the Livermore Varsity Cowboys were beaten by De La Salle, ranked #31 in the nation. The Cowboys were completed dominated by the Spartans on offense and defense. The Cowboys held their own after De La Salle scored six goals in the firstquarter by holding them to two goals in the second quarter with a swarming man-to-man defense. The Spartans eventually ran the defense into the ground in the third quarter with six goals and finished with a 15 - 0 victory. Gavin Herr stopped 16 shots in the loss.

The Cowboys next play the #19 ranked team in the nation, the Amador Valley Dons.

The Livermore J.V team was defeated by the De La Salle Spartans 6 - 4. Livermore played an uninspired first half by turning the ball over many times and had many penalties which led to a deficit of 5 - 1 at half time. Livermore fought back by scoring three goals in the fourth quarter but it was too little too late in the furious comeback. Goals were scored by Zach Pursch, Daniel Rowan, and Joey Youngblood, who scored two. Steven Martinez stopped 17 shots in the loss.

Reality Sets In For Cowboys

After the finest Non-League Lacrosse schedule 4 - 0, reality set in for the Varsity Cowboys who started the season (3/17) against San Ramon Valley who were the NCS champions last year. The Cowboys were totally manhandled by the Wolves in being beat 17 - 1. San Ramon scored 6 in the first quarter and never looked back. The Cowboys could only muster 4 shots on goals. The lone score came for Ben Jacobson assisted by Paul Warnke. Most of the game was played in the Cowboys defensive zone. The Wolves relentless onslaught wore down the Cowboys defense and goalie Gavin Herr who stopped 12 shots.

Next up for the Cowboys De La Salle this Friday at De La Salle.

The J.V. team played there best ever game against San Ramon and lost by only a 7 - 3 margin. In 3 years at the J.V. level the average score against the Cowboys were by an 18 - 0 score. The Cowboys goals were scored by Jacob Cuellar, Zach Pursch and Daniel Rowan, Cameron Locke had the lone assist. Steven Martinez stopped an unbelievable 25 shots. The defense did play a swarming defense which helped stifle the Wolves offense. Leading the way for the defense was Joe Gonzalez, Aubrey Gott, Spencer Davidson, Michael Fischer, Ian Ingram and Mac Hunter. Again it needs to be noted that although we lost it was by far the best game the J.V. team has ever played against San Ramon.

Score Keepers Needed

Volunteers are needed to help with scorekeeping during the Varsity Games. Our coaches would like us to keep score at both home and away games, so we need someone to help share those duties with Laura Stark. Also, during Varsity home games, a spotter is needed to sit with the score keeper on the field, and help spot shots, goals, assists, and to help with the timers during penalties. It's really fun being at the scorekeepers table. You get to know all the boys and the coaches, plus you see the action up close. Laura will train you on everything you need to know.

Give Laura a call (cell phone: 980-6983) or send her an email (laura.stark@sun.com) and you can work out a schedule.

Boy's Varsity Defeats Northgate, 11-3

On March 13th, Livermore scored five goals in the first quarter led by Tommy Parker's four goals; Marc Acosta added one for the 5 - 0 lead. Livermore never trailed. In the second quarter, once again, goals by Parker and Acosta would produce a 7 - 2 lead at the half. Ben Jacobson scored two goals in the 3rd and 4th quarters to give the Cowboys the 11 - 3 victory. Assists were scored by Acosta (three), Parker (two), Harrison Wood (two), and Paul Warnke (one). The Cowboys had many penalties (15) in what amounted to a rather sloppy game. The defense was lead by Chris Hill, Ryan Stark, Rusty Schmidt, and Craig Cofer. Long stick middies were lead by Travis Cyronek, John Yoon, and Ryan Wilkerson. Gavin Herr stopped 12 goals to get his 4th victory in non-league games. On attack were Tommy Parker, Ben Jacobson, Jerrod Martinez, Marc Acosta, Eric Loberg, Jake Heston, and Morgan Linn. Middies were Harrison Wood, Paul Warnke, Kyle Kline, Brian Hicks, Vince VanBinsbergen, Nate Loberg, Matt Holzschuh, and Andrew Finster.

This victory gave the Livermore Cowboys a 4 - 0 record in non-league games. The fun ends next week as Livermore starts their league games against the two of the best teams in the toughest division in the Bay Area, the East Bay Athletic League.

The defense (which put a clamp on Campolindo was was averaging 16 goals per game) was lead by Chris Hill, Ryan Stark, Rusty Schmidt, and Craig Cofer. Outstanding goal tending by Gavin Herr (stopped 12 shots) shut down the high powered Campolindo offense. This was a great game by all in keeping Livermore undefeated and ranked # 3 in the CIF.

Snack Shack

Becky Schmidt has volunteered to coordinate the Snack Shack this year. The dates for home games are March 24, 25, 31, April 3, 21, 28 and May 8. I, Monty Herr, promised to organize the necessary volunteers. The plan is to have Varsity parents man the shack during JV games and have JV parents do the shack during Varsity games.

This is a good fund raiser. But it also is an important service. Having a hot baked potato during a cold game is a real treat.

It is important to get people to commit to volunteer. If we get volunteers lined up early on, that takes a lot of the pressure off the planning task. We also need people to volunteer to bake potatoes before games.

Pick a date or two or three and commit. Let me know [at herr2@comcast.net] when you will be willing to help, providing your telephone number as well as email. (It will help to copy Becky as well (email: malibubecky@comcast.net.)) I will be chief rabble rouser as the season goes on.

Livermore Lacrosse Teams Beat Alhambra

Livermore J.V. Beat Alhambra by the score of 12 - 1

On February 24th, Livermore was led by Zachary Purch who recorded 4 goals, Stan Steeper had 3 goals, and Kyle (Jr.) McCammon had 2 goals. Steven Martinez stopped 7 shots in allowing 1 goal for the second game in a row. Again strong defense and timely offense were the key to the victory.

The defense was led by Ryan Stark, Chris Hill, Rusty Schmidt, and Craig Cofer. All in all it was a good Victory.

Livermore JV Beats Northgate

The Livermore Junior Varsity team beat Northgate 8 - 1 vs. Northgate at LHS February 21st.

The boys played a very good game. Stan Steeper had a hat trick, Steven Martinez turned away 9 shots on goal. The defense played a hard hitting game, while the attack and middies had numerous scoring opportunities and passed very well. Coaches John, Bill, and Darren were very proud of the how well the boys played, with a lot of heart and fair play; a job well done!

Junior Varsity Tournament

The Junior Varsity Tournament was held at Foothill High School on February 28. Results were:

  1. Livermore 0 -- Amador 4
  2. Livermore 2 -- Foothill 1
  3. Livermore 0 -- San Ramon Valley 4

The boys' impressed a lot of coaches and people who were there with their fine defense and great goal tending; all of the boy's played very well against the EBAL elite. While this was a have-fun tournament and the games were only 25 minutes long, Livermore played very well against teams they will face later this season. Coaches Bill, Darren and John were all pleased with their effort.

James Acosta has been taking pictures at most of the games and they are found at http://grom.smugmug.com/Sports.

A large percentage of the Livermore Cowboys Lacrosse Team played indoor box lacrosse at the Santa Clara OffTheWall indoor soccer facility. The team, playing as the Lumberjax, won six out of ten games and won the last five they played. In the process, they beat every other team in the league at least once. The boys practiced Mondays through Thursdays at Big TreesPark. A collection of pictures have been posted at http://www.wellchosenwords.biz/Box_Lacrosse_2008.htm. There is a team picture in the Albums tab of this web site (not all of the team was present on the day of the picture).
