Cowboys vs Granada (May 8, 2009)Disheartened Livermore Boys' Varsity Lacrosse Team Fall to Granada By a Score of 8 - 6.The game started with a moment of silence honoring Tommy Parker's dad, Stephen Parker, who had passed away earlier this week. There was no score after one quarter. In the second quarter Granada scored first. Then Tommy Parker tied the score at one all, assisted by Marc Acosta. Parker's second goal, again assisted by Acosta, put the Cowboys ahead 2 - 1. Granada came back and scored the next two goals to take the lead. With seconds left in the first half, as Parker was going in to score again, a cheap, illegal cross-check in the face put Parker down. The Granada defender who delivered the blow smart mouthed over him, and received only a two minute penalty. Once again, bad officiating cost Livermore, not only the game, but also put Tommy out of the game. Granada scored two goals in the third quarter and took a 5 -2 lead. Going into the fourth quarter, Granada scored first, making it a 6 -2 game. Then Livermore tied the score with four unanswered goals in the fourth quarter. Ben Jacobson had two goals; Vince VanBinsbergen and Paul Warnke had the other two. Assists were scored by Acosta (who had two), Kyle Kline, and Jacobson. Eventually Granada scored two to take the lead and the win. Gavin Herr had 30 saves in the loss. This was the Boys' Varsity Lacrosse team's best year yet, finishing with a 5 - 13 record. Attacking players for the year were Marc Acosta, Jerrod Martinez, Eric Loberg, and Tommy Parker. Middies for the year were Ben Jacobson, Harrison Wood, Paul Warnke, Nathan Loberg, Brian Hicks, Vincent VanBinsbergen, Kyle Kline, Matt Holzschuh, and Andrew Finster, and long-stick-middies Travis Cyronek, Ryan Wilkerson, and Jon Yoon. Defensive players for the year were Ryan Stark, Chris Hill, Rusty Schmidt, Craig Cofer, and Joe Gonzalez . The goalie was Gavin Herr. Head Coach Gordon Cobb, Assistant Coach John Hill, and Assistant Coach Austin Silva are very pleased with how all of the players played this year. The EBAL league with five teams in the playoffs, is not only the toughest league in the Bay Area, but the toughest in California. All .parents, players, and Livermore Varsity Team supporters should be proud of this team for the skill and spirit they have shown this year -- and for all who stand behind the Team. Comeback Victory Propels Livermore JV Over Granada 6 - 5The Livermore J.V Boys' Lacrosse team came back from 3 goals down to defeat Granada 6 - 5. As they have done all year, the Livermore team would get down by as many as four goals and would fight back. This time it was a stunning victory for the Boys' Lacrosse team. Granada had a 1 - 0 lead after the first quarter. In the second quarter, Livermore was down 3 - 0 when Stan Steeper's goal assisted by Jr. McCammon brought the score to 3 - 1. A Granada goal with 8 seconds left in the half made it 4 - 1. Livermore scored the next two goals to make it 4 - 3. Granada then scored and led 5 -3 after three quarters. Goals were by Steven Niessen and Daniel Rowan assisted by Cody Shubin and Keyon Taravati. Then the comeback began. Steeper scored assisted by Zach Pursch, then Pursch scored assisted by Rowan and the game was tied, 5 all. Finally, with 1:27 left in the game, Steven Niessen's winning goal, assisted by Shubin, brought the victory to the Cowboys. This was a very successful season for the J.V. team with a 5 - 11 record. Attack players for the year were Stan Steeper, Zachary Pursch, Kyle (Jr.) McCammon, Cameron Locke, Jacob Cuellar, and Arek Medina. Middies were Joey Youngblood, Cody Shubin, Keyon Taravati, Steven Niessen, Daniel Rowan, Gary Chapeta, Michael Filyau, Scott Gragg, William Kaufman, Sam Burnett, Remington Fox, Kamron Abri, and Joe Munns. Defensive players were Aubrey Gott, Spencer Davidson, Tim Byrnes, Ian Ingram, Chris Alderson, and Michael Fischer. The goalie for the year was Steven Martinez. Coaches John, Darren, and Bill are very proud of all of the players who played with a lot of heart and never gave up. Livermore Wine Country Festival Soda/Water SalesLivermore High School Mens Lacrosse Fund RaiserMay 2nd and 3rdThe Livermore Mens' Lacrosse Teams handled soda/water sales for the festival. Half of the proceeds will go to the Lacrosse Program. Livermore Downtown Inc. handles the upfront costs of the booth, soda, and water. Profits will then be split. Last year, this activity netted $1800 for the team. Cool rainy weather dampened (pun intended) the crowds enthusiam for cold drinks and so we didn't nearly so well this year. The final reconning won't be know for a while. We had a lot of volunteers and thanks are due to the adults and lacrosse players that came out and served the public. Their participation is greatly appreciated. Lacrosse BanquetWe need two parents from each team to coordinate the Banquet for the end of the lacrosse season. The date is May 20th, a Wednesday, from 6 - 9 in the Student Union. Let Coach John Hill know if you are willing to volunteer. Livermore at Foothill (5/5/2009)Foothill beats LivermoreIn a game that meant little to the Cowboys, Foothill defeated Livermore 17 - 3. Varsity Cowboys goals were scored by Marc Acosta, Eric Loberg, and Ben Jacobson. Assists were by Harrison Wood, Travis Cyronek, and high flying defenseman Rusty Schmidt. Gavin Herr had 14 saves in the loss. Livermore now turns its attention to crosstown rival Granada this Friday. Livermore loses to FoothillThe J. V. Lacrosse Cowboys once again fell behind at the half, by a score of 6 - 2. Goals were scored by Joey Youngblood and Zach Pursch. The lone assist was by Steven Niessen. Livermore had a better second half and eventually lost by a score of 9 - 4. The other two goals were by Scott Gragg and Niessen with the only assist by Daniel Rowan. Steven Martinez had 17 saves in the loss. Livermore vs California (5/1/2009)Rain, Wind, Undermanned Cowboys fall at CalThe Livermore Boys' Lacrosse team lost to Cal by a 17 - 3 score. Livermore played with only one defensive and one long stick middie substitution as many of the team did not show up for the game. The game was played in the wind and the rain as the many Livermore fans who braved the elements saw a one sided score. At half the score was Cal 9 Livermore 2. Goals were scored by Marc Acosta and Ben Jacobson assisted by Jacobson and Harrison Wood. Livermore's final goal was scored unassisted by Jerrod Martinez. Four goals were scored when Livermore was a man down. Gavin Herr had 14 saves in the loss. Last second goal beat CowboysWith two seconds to go, a goal beat the Livermore J.V Boys' Lacrosse team 9 - 8 vs. Cal in a rainy, dreary night. At the half, the Cowboys once again were down by a score of 6 - 3. Goals were scored by Joey Youngblood, Scott Gragg (his first) and Stan Steeper. Assists were by Gragg, Steven Niessen, and Jacob Cuellar. Livermore cut the scored to 7 -5 after three quarters.Goals were by Stan Steeper and Zach Pursch, with an assist from Steeper. Cal went ahead 8 - 5 with 9 minutes left in the game. Then Livermore stormed back to tie the score at 8 all with 1:30 left in the game. Goals were scored by Niessen, Pursch, and Dan Rowan with assists by Steeper and Gragg. With two seconds left and Cowboys all over a Cal attackman, he somehow scored the winning goal. As it has been all year for the Cowboys' they get themselves in a hole and will not go away and keep fighting back. Unfortunately this time, time ran out. Steven Martinez had 10 goals in the loss. Volunteers are needed to help with scorekeeping during the Varsity Games. Our coaches would like us to keep score at both home and away games, so we need someone to help share those duties with Laura Stark. Also, during Varsity home games, a spotter is needed to sit with the score keeper on the field, and help spot shots, goals, assists, and to help with the timers during penalties. It's really fun being at the scorekeepers table. You get to know all the boys and the coaches, plus you see the action up close. Laura will train you on everything you need to know.
Give Laura a call (cell phone: 980-6983) or send her an email (laura.stark@sun.com) and you can work out a schedule.
On March 13th, Livermore scored five goals in the first quarter led by Tommy Parker's four goals; Marc Acosta added one for the 5 - 0 lead. Livermore never trailed. In the second quarter, once again, goals by Parker and Acosta would produce a 7 - 2 lead at the half. Ben Jacobson scored two goals in the 3rd and 4th quarters to give the Cowboys the 11 - 3 victory. Assists were scored by Acosta (three), Parker (two), Harrison Wood (two), and Paul Warnke (one). The Cowboys had many penalties (15) in what amounted to a rather sloppy game. The defense was lead by Chris Hill, Ryan Stark, Rusty Schmidt, and Craig Cofer. Long stick middies were lead by Travis Cyronek, John Yoon, and Ryan Wilkerson. Gavin Herr stopped 12 goals to get his 4th victory in non-league games. On attack were Tommy Parker, Ben Jacobson, Jerrod Martinez, Marc Acosta, Eric Loberg, Jake Heston, and Morgan Linn. Middies were Harrison Wood, Paul Warnke, Kyle Kline, Brian Hicks, Vince VanBinsbergen, Nate Loberg, Matt Holzschuh, and Andrew Finster.
This victory gave the Livermore Cowboys a 4 - 0 record in non-league games. The fun ends next week as Livermore starts their league games against the two of the best teams in the toughest division in the Bay Area, the East Bay Athletic League.
We are collecting the money for the Spirit Packs. The cost is $25.00 for the three item package (sweatshirt, T-shirt and/or mesh pants/sweat pants) or all four items for $37.00. Some people have requested only one item and so they pay the one item price (T-shirt: $7.00; sweat shirt: $18.00; sweat pants or mesh shorts: $12.00).
Please make out the checks to Eagle Embroidery or provide cash.
On March 6th, Livermore stayed undefeated by beating Dougherty Valley by the final score of 15 - 2
The Livermore offense was lead by Ben Jacobson who tallied 5 goals, followed by Marc Acosta's 3 goals; Tommy Paker had 2 goals and Jerrod Martinez, Eric Loberg, Nate Loberg, Paul Warnke and Vince VanBinsbergen each had 1 goal. Martinez, Parker, Warnke, and Kyle Kline had 2 assists each. Jacobson, Harrison Wood, and Brian Hick each had 1 assist. The defense again was lead by Ryan Stark, Chris Hill, Rusty Schmidt and Craig Cofer. Travis Cyronek, Ryan Wilkerson, and John Yoon provided fine middie play. Gavin Herr stopped 10 shots and maintained his 2.6 goals per game. The Cowboys remain undefeated in 3 wins outside of EBAL.
On March 4th, the Livermore Cowboys defeated the previously undefeated (3-0) Campolindo Cougars 7 - 6 to remain undefeated.
Livermore goals were scored by Marc Acosta (2), Tommy Parker (2), Ben Jacobson (2), and Kyle Kline (1). Assists were scored by Kyle Kline (3), Jake Heston, Marc Acosta, and Paul Warnke (1) each. We had great middie play from Harrison Wood, Vince Vanbinsbergen, Paul Warnke, Ryan Wilkerson, Travis Cyronek, and John Yoon. The defense (which put a clamp on Campolindo was was averaging 16 goals per game) was lead by Chris Hill, Ryan Stark, Rusty Schmidt, and Craig Cofer. Outstanding goal tending by Gavin Herr (stopped 12 shots) shut down the high powered Campolindo offense. This was a great game by all in keeping Livermore undefeated and ranked # 3 in the CIF.
Becky Schmidt has volunteered to coordinate the Snack Shack this year. The dates for home games are March 24, 25, 31, April 3, 21, 28 and May 8. I, Monty Herr, promised to organize the necessary volunteers. The plan is to have Varsity parents man the shack during JV games and have JV parents do the shack during Varsity games.
This is a good fund raiser. But it also is an important service. Having a hot baked potato during a cold game is a real treat.
It is important to get people to commit to volunteer. If we get volunteers lined up early on, that takes a lot of the pressure off the planning task. We also need people to volunteer to bake potatoes before games.
Pick a date or two or three and commit. Let me know [at herr2@comcast.net] when you will be willing to help, providing your telephone number as well as email. (It will help to copy Becky as well (email: malibubecky@comcast.net.)) I will be chief rabble rouser as the season goes on.
On February 24th, Livermore was led by Zachary Purch who recorded 4 goals, Stan Steeper had 3 goals, and Kyle (Jr.) McCammon had 2 goals. Steven Martinez stopped 7 shots in allowing 1 goal for the second game in a row. Again strong defense and timely offense were the key to the victory.
Livermore dominated Alhambra in scoring 8 goals in the first quarter. Livermore was led by Ben Jacobson, Marc Acosta, and Jerrod Martinez who all had hat tricks. Tommy Parker added 2 goals and single goals were scored by Nate Loberg, Eric Loberg, Brian Hicks, Paul Warnke, Matt Holzschuh, and Travis Cyronek. Gavin Herr stopped 5 shots. The defense was led by Ryan Stark, Chris Hill, Rusty Schmidt, and Craig Cofer. All in all it was a good Victory.
The Livermore Junior Varsity team beat Northgate 8 - 1 vs. Northgate at LHS February 21st.
The boys played a very good game. Stan Steeper had a hat trick, Steven Martinez turned away 9 shots on goal. The defense played a hard hitting game, while the attack and middies had numerous scoring opportunities and passed very well. Coaches John, Bill, and Darren were very proud of the how well the boys played, with a lot of heart and fair play; a job well done!
The Junior Varsity Tournament was held at Foothill High School on February 28. Results were:
The boys' impressed a lot of coaches and people who were there with their fine defense and great goal tending; all of the boy's played very well against the EBAL elite. While this was a have-fun tournament and the games were only 25 minutes long, Livermore played very well against teams they will face later this season. Coaches Bill, Darren and John were all pleased with their effort.

The team, playing as the Lumberjax, won six out of ten games and won the last five they played. In the process, they beat every other team in the league at least once. The boys practiced Mondays through Thursdays at Big TreesPark. A collection of pictures have been posted at http://www.wellchosenwords.biz/Box_Lacrosse_2008.htm.
