Tyler Runs PR at State!
Sophomore Tyler Kesner took advantage of the opportunity of running at Detweiler Park in Peoria to come up with a new PR performance of 16:52, and finished 124th out of 208 runners in the Class A State meet.  Tyler got out pretty fast (5:16 mile) and struggled a bit on the 2nd mile, but had his typical strong finish enroute to his PR time.  This caps a fine season for Tyler, who also earned NAC all-conference status through his 3rd place finish at the NAC meet.

Please Check Wildcat Athletic Department Website for Season Highlites

I am moving towards converting all of our CC/Track web highlites to our Luther North Wildcat Athletic Department website to streamline my time and productivity.  This site will probably continue to be used as an archive/history site, where complete season results will be posted after the season is complete.  For weekly reports and information, visit our Athletic Website, where you will find CC/Track info on the front page, as well as on the individual team pages.

Girls Team Takes 4th in Wildcat Classic

Our girls finished 4th in our last home meet of the year agaist some pretty good competition.   Kayla and Stephanie lead the way as they teamed for 3 firsts and a 2nd place, along with helping our 4x4 relay team to a 3rd place.  This is was a good prep for our NAC conference meet next week.

Our boys team was decimated with injury and illness, and only scored 7 points.  Kyle Luna had our best day, placing in each hurdle race, including a PR in the highs.

See links below for complete results.

Steph Finishes in 4th Place at State

Stephanie - 4th Place - 1600m Run

Stephanie earned her 3rd All-State Track medal, this time taking 4th place in the 1600m run.  After finishing 5th in her heat in the prelims on Thursday, and running a new PR time of 5:10.98, Stephanie was psyched for a good race in the finals on Saturday.   She decided to scratch out of the 3200m run, to save her best for the 1600.   The race developed at a resonable pace, with the whole pack of 12 together.  Stephanie got a bit boxed in, but relaxed, and let the pack slide by so she could get outside.  She then made a move up towards the front on lap two, putting herself into a good position.  On the 3rd lap, she moved into 2nd place, right behind the leader.   At the bell lap, she was in a great position.  The leader started to pull away a bit from the pack, but Stephanie hung tough.  With 200m to go, she was still in 2nd place.   As they came off the last turn, Stephanie kicked it in, but her lack of conditioning from her injury time this season, started to show, as she was passed by two runners in the last 20m.   She ran nearly the same time as in the prelims (5:10.99), which is less than 1 second from our school record.  Congrats, Steph, for overcoming a lot of adversity this season, dealing with the injury, and staying positive and confident to the end.

Luther North girls had an excellent performance in the field events, as they were leading the team score after the 5 field events.  Michelle Rodriguez won the shot put, with Kate VanTilburg in 4th, while in the discus, Kate took 2nd and Natalie Lundsberg took 3rd.  Kayla Bushey won both the long and triple jumps, as the Cats scored 48 points.  The team could muster only 2 points in the running events, however.

For the boys, the team scored 12 points, as Kente Mixon went down with an injury after running one of the top times in the 100m and 200m prelims.

Michelle Rodriquez - 30'+ throw in shot put

We had our first outdoor meets this week - pretty good weather on Tuesday at home and a great day Saturday at Benedictine Univ.   Tuesday, we lost to Walther (what else is new) but beat Northtown, Marine Academy, and Hancock (3 public schools).    Senior sprinter Kente Mixon is undefeated in the sprints, beating everyone Tuesday (including Walther's sprinters - always love doing that!) and then winning the 100m and 200m at the Lisle Mega Meet (11.31 and 23.22 - two excellent times).  Senior thrower Michelle Rodriguez won the shot put on Tuesday, but then lost Saturday to take 2nd, getting beat by the Walther thrower she beat on Tuesday.   Kayla Bushey had 2 PR's Tuesday in the Long and Triple jumps taking 1st.  Sean Flosi has cleared 5'8 twice now, taking first Tues and 2nd Sat.

We have another home meet Tuesday and then host the 31st Luther North Invite on Saturday - our biggest home meet of the year.

NIKE Northside/Southside Challenge

October 6, 2010

The Luther North Cross Country team has been selected to be participants in the NIKE Northside/Southside Challenge as part of the Chicago Marathon.   Our team was presented with official NIKE apparel today, including uniforms, sweats, and shoes – all compliments of NIKE.   Our team will compete in a 2.6 mile race Sunday while the Chicago Marathon is going on against other Chicago high school runners.   Senior Stephanie Simpson won last year’s inaugural race, and is looking to successfully defend her crown this year.   This is a great opportunity for our athletes to see and experience world class running right here in Chicago.

In addition to this, we have a large number of LHN alumni running in the Chicago Marathon, headed by our own assistant CC coach, John Franklin (’98), who is doing his 2nd marathon.  Other alums running include: Sheila Fleischhacker (’96), Darlene Duncan (’97), Ryan Luat (’98), Beth Bremner (’98), Jenny Lorenz (’98), John Schramm (’99), Andrea Collias Bock (’00), Tom Sheehy (‘00), Lynn Jacobs Sheehy (’00), Kelly Davies Herda (’04), Britta Helwig (’06), Jacquelynn Muench (’06), Jacob Grim (’09), Ryan Muench (’10), and Trevor Schaeffer (’10).    There may even be more than these listed.  Send additional names to coach Dave Grim (dgrim@luthernorth.org)

Wildcat Team at the NIKE Challenge

On a beautiful morning along Chicago's lakefront, the Wildcats participated in the NIKE Northside/Southside Challenge.  Stephanie won the race again, successfully defending her championship from last year.  Our team members were all presented with medals for their efforts and had a great experience running in the event before the Marathon finished.  Our girls team finished 5th out of the 18 teams.  We then got a chance to see the marathon finish as our hero Sammie Wanjuri pulled away from his competitor in the 1/4 mile to win the race.   We also got a chance to see nearly 20 alums run the race.  Congrats to all on a great day!
