Spring 1999 Kicks Off Lake Forest Cobras
The Lake Forest Cobras team was formed in early 1999 from players within Lake Forest Little League. It was a way to give the players additional experience, and learn a higher level of baseball. It was also a convenient excuse to plan a Spring vacation to the desert for a baseball tournament.
The Lake Forest Cobras held three practices to get ready for the Spring Tournament in Palm Springs. The practices were a learning experience for most of the players since most had not played with the new rules. New areas of learning included leading off before the pitch, playing on 70 foot bases, pitchers learning to hold runners on, batters and catchers learning to deal with the dropped third strike, and seeming base hits to right field turning into plays at first base. Coaches Bill and Todd did most of the teaching of these new skills, and the players picked them up pretty well.
When the Cobras traveled to the desert for the tournament, the families stayed together at two hotels, which the players thoroughly enjoyed. It was pool time in between games, with a lot of running around the hotel added in there.
The families enjoyed a "dinner for about 40" at a local restaurant one night. Some of the families took the tram to the top of the local mountain on another night, and ate at the restaurant at the top.
We played four baseball games and won two of them. It was an exceptionally fun time, a great time was had by all, and many memories were made.
