Thompson Lead Sparks Past Shock 78-58

LOS ANGELES (AP) -Lisa Leslie and the Los Angeles Sparks were as good as advertised.

Tina Thompson had 18 points, Betty Lennox added 17 points and 10 rebounds and the Sparks easily defeated the defending WNBA champion Detroit Shock 78-58 on Saturday in the WNBA season opener.

Los Angeles wore jerseys bearing the logo of the Farmers Insurance Group, which the Sparks entered a multiyear sponsorship deal with. The Sparks and the Phoenix Mercury became the first teams in the league to form jersey sponsorship deals.

Leslie had an off-game scoring just six points, but Los Angeles had plenty of star power to back up the four time-Olympic Gold medalist - even with Candace Parker sidelined.

Parker, last year's WNBA MVP, had a baby in May and will likely return in July. Thompson, the league's second leading scorer behind Leslie, was added during the offseason in an attempt to offset that void.

"It's great," said Leslie. "We have a lot of weapons and I think it's going to be like an orchestra - any given night anybody's going to have a solo and Tina and Betty have played well all training camp and I just hope to join them."

Lennox, the 2004 Finals MVP, and Thompson gave the Sparks (1-0) the surge on offense that they needed. The two were catalysts in two separate 11-plus point runs to give Los Angeles a 22 point lead going into halftime.

"They have more scorers, more shooters. They structured their team very well. They beefed up across the board," said Detroit coach Bill Laimbeer.

Leslie, who was often double teamed, got to sit on the bench in the fourth quarter and enjoy the show as the Sparks continued to rout the Shock, who were missing Cheryl Ford and Kara Broxton.

Ford is recovering from ACL surgery and Broxton is serving a six-game suspension for pleading guilty to drunken driving charges.

Deanna Nolan and Taj McWilliams carried the load for Detroit, which shot a measly 31 percent from the field. Nolan finished with 15 and McWilliams added 12.

"It's alright. We'll make more," said McWilliams. "It's our first game and now we have a basis and we can go from here."

The shooting woes were the least of the Shock's troubles, though.

Detroit's bench got thinner after Plenette Pierson went down with a shoulder injury in the first quarter. Pierson and Thompson got tangled up while going up for a rebound and both fell.

Laimbeer said Pierson, who clutched her shoulder and remained on the floor for some time before being assisted to the bench, will likely be out for the remainder of the season. He thought Thompson's hit was intentional, adding more steam to an ongoing dislikeness of Sparks' coach Michael Cooper and vice versa.

"You can't intentionally pull them over your back and injure them, that's not good," said Laimbeer. "They targeted Plenette today and that's unfortunate. Tina did it on purpose. She had her and she took advantage of her."

At first look, the Pierson and Thompson tangle under the basket brought back memories of last year's scuffle when Pierson and Parker got tangled up.

A fight ensued after both went down, and Pierson, assistant coach Rick Mahorn and nine others were suspended for roles in the altercation.

Besides Laimbeer and Cooper trading barbs, things didn't take a turn for the worse.

"Bill's going to always have a different take on things," said Cooper. "He's a different kind of person. It was a play that happened with two players that just got tangled up. It's unfortunate that any player got hurt. He and I are always going to have our running monologue."

With Ford, Pierson and Broxton out, the team's roster is down to eight players.

Detroit can submit an application to the league office for an exemption to add additional players because of the injuries. Two games into Broxton's suspension, the Shock has the ability to fill a roster spot without penalty providing it fits into the team's salary cap.

1-0, First Place

FOUR FOR FIVE: LISA LESLIE

LISA LESLIE

As the WNBA celebrates the fifth anniversary of the WNBA All-Star Game (Saturday, July 12, 4 ET, ABC), WNBA.com will celebrate the five women who have played in all four WNBA All-Star Games. In our fifth and final installment, we look at Sparks center Lisa Leslie.

Leslie has made the All-Star Game her personal showcase as she has been named the game's MVP three times in 1999, 2001 and 2002. Strangely enough, she's didn't start the 2001 game. Leslie rectified the snub by being named MVP of that game. She has started every other All-Star Game and will do so again in New York.

See what the three-time All-Star Game MVP had to say about her experiences in the WNBA's midsummer classic.

Is it a great honor for you to be voted to the Inaugural All-Star Game?

"It's overwhelming really. There's a lot of women in the WNBA. There's a lot of women who could be here. To be voted by the fans says a lot -- that people are aware of what's going on. I'm really thankful. I think they just really appreciate my talent so I'm definitely grateful."

Can you explain your feelings at being named MVP?

"I feel really honored to have this award. Obviously a few other players probably had the opportunity to get it as well. I guess basically I'll leave here believing that I'm going to be a part of history."

Lisa's stats: 13 points, 5 rebounds in 17 minutes, named game's MVP

Are you going to go for a second All-Star Game MVP?

"I'm on a very good team here and sometimes the situation may come about with a few fast breaks, but I can't predict what's going to happen. I'm going to come out and play hard during the minutes that I do get."

Can compare last year's game and this year's?

"I'd have to say last year's was so much more intense, because we really didn't know what to expect at the All-Star Weekend. We went from one media interview to another. We were shuffled around a lot. We did some appearances. But this being our second year, we knew what to expect. We knew when to get rest and when to have fun."

You're a three-time All-Star. How do you feel?

"To be a three-time All-Star, it's definitely an honor to represent our league at the All-Star Game. It's exciting because it's a big national event and on ESPN and a lot of fans can watch and get involved. The league and the sponsors have done a really great job of making this a really memorable event."

What Leslie said after the game:

"It's a great honor. First, I want to thank God for giving me this opportunity and also my teammates from the West side for giving me the ball. It was a lot of fun to be here. I know the East, the crowd is a little upset that we won again, but it was a great game and I'm just thankful I'm going back to L.A. with the MVP."

Lisa's stats: 20 points*, 9 rebounds in 23 minutes, named game's MVP

What does it mean to be here with your coach and two teammates?

"It's great. We were looking to have four or five. It's a great opportunity, especially for our coaching staff to be here after winning the championship. Coach Cooper will have a lot of fun. I think the West will enjoy getting a taste of what he's like."

What Leslie said after the game:

"That was pretty exciting. Overall, that was an awesome All-Star Game. I don't think we could have asked for a better game to be played here in the Nation's Capital. It was very competitive. Obviously, the East is much improved and they did a great job of really fighting hard and executing and playing the game really physical."

Lisa's stats: 18 points, 14 rebounds in 28 minutes, named game's MVP
