2008 LALL CALENDAR OF EVENTS
Letter from the Incoming President, LALL
Dear LALL Families: Welcome Back to Another Baseball Season with Livermore American Little League! It seems that last season just ended “yesterday” but the LALL Board has already started planning for the 2008 season. We hope to see many of our LALL families returning and are looking forward to seeing how your children have grown since last season. We have a lot of great plans in store for the league and we hope you will join us as we strive to make Livermore American the flagship of Little League—not only the best league in Livermore but the best league within the entire District 57. Field of Dreams and Snack Shack Attack. This year we are planning to tackle a number of improvements to the fields, our equipment, and the snack shack. How much we will be able to accomplish this year will depend on how much money we can raise through sponsorships, volunteerism, and donations. As you know, our league operates as a nonprofit organization and while registration fees helps pay for normal league operating expenses, from time to time we need to raise additional funds for special projects. WE NEED YOUR HELP! Have we set our sights high? You bet! But I am convinced that if any league can accomplish these goals, Livermore American families can make it happen.7th Inning Stretch. New this year – a fun-filled family day to celebrate baseball. Be sure to reserve Saturday April 19th from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. It will be a chance for all of us to hang out at the fields and enjoy our players and our families. We’ll have games, contests, food, music and fun! The basket auction will be back and we’re even having a dunk tank for those of you who can’t resist! Please Read. You will find a schedule with tryout dates, contact information for Board members, and descriptions of the Little League divisions in this newsletter. You will also be hearing a lot more about our efforts to raise money through our Field of Dreams and Snack Shack Attack fundraising campaigns throughout the season. We will need your help to make these dreams a reality.Your 2007/08 LALL Board. I’m very excited to be serving as your President this year and am thrilled to be working with a group of individuals who have already shown a “can do” and “will do” attitude. I know that our time will be well spent as we work toward making our children’s baseball experience a great one. On behalf of the LALL Board, thank you for the support you have given the league in the past, and as the saying goes, “LET’S PLAY BALL!” Sincerely, Phil Robbins Phil RobbinsPresident, 2007/08 LALL Board LITTLE LEAGUE CHILD PROTECTION PROGRAM All local Little Leagues are now required to conduct background checks on Managers, Coaches, Board of Directors members and any other persons, volunteers or hired workers, who provide regular service to the league and/or have repetitive access to, or contact with, players or teams. Which LALL Division is Best for my Child? Throughout signups and tryouts, many parents have asked, "Which division/age group is best for my child?" The LALL Board of Directors would like to respond to these inquiries with the following statements. First of all, we want all players to learn how to play and enjoy the game of baseball. To ensure players continue to be developed appropriately as they grow, we have supplemented Little League International’s games rules with additional local game rules that we believe recognize players’ skill levels and levels of understanding as they move up through the various divisions. The vision of Little League International is that by the time your child is age 11, he or she should be ready to play in the Major Division. The general ages for each division are indicated in the chart below. Age Make-Up By Division
In support of the Little League’s vision, it is the LALL Board recommends that the following path of development would work best for the majority of the players in our league. Recommended Development Path
This is the guideline we use to balance the competition in each division so that your child has a successful and fun season. (Note, too, that our league also follows the recommended division progression in terms of selecting players aged 9 through 12 for post-season All Star and tournament play.)
We believe that holding players back from our recommended path leaves us in short supply of children playing in the appropriate skill level, leaves an uneven balance of competition in each division and potentially decreases fun for the players involved. Ultimately, requesting a specific division for your child is your decision as a parent. However, we have found that over the many years of experience managing this League and working with the kids, that the prescribed path outlined provides the maximum amount of learning, challenge and rewards for the kids.
