Lafayette Captures Dramatic Win

WACO — The Lafayette Little League All-Stars certainly learned the value of never giving up in Friday's first game of the 2011 Southwest Regional Tournament in Waco, Texas.

First, Lafayette led 8-0 only to watch Midland scored seven in the sixth inning to tie it at 8-8.

Then Midland scored three runs in the top of the eighth to seemingly saddle Lafayette with a hard-luck loss.

Instead, Lafayette got a two-run single from Nate Cox and then a game-winning, two-run double from Cain Castille in the bottom of the eighth for a dramatic 12-11 roller coaster win.

The Lafayette All-Stars will now move on to their second pool play game at 6 tonight against Arkansas, followed by the third one against Pearland, Texas at 8:30 p.m. on Monday.

Lafayette somehow eight walks and five errors in the loss.

Before that late slide that forced extra innings, Lafayette's big bats were at it again. Cox walked ahead of an Austin Primeaux two-run homer for a 2-0 lead in the first.

That lead grew by a run with a Tyler Miller home run in the third, before Lafayette really erupted with five runs in the fourth for an 8-0 lead.

Castille doubled head of an Ethan Hines RBI single. Miller then added a two-run homer and Cox an RBI

single.

That appeared to be enough to support ace Haden Erbe, who allowed one hit, one walk and struck out five in four innings.

But Midland got one run in the fifth and then seven in the sixth to tie it.

Lafayette nearly won the game in the seventh, but a baserunner was thrown out at the plate trying to scoring on a passed ball with two outs.

Midland then got a solo homer from Jaxon Hallmark and a two-run blase from John Wuthrich in the eighth to seemingly take control.

Instead, Lafayette responded with the winning four-run rally, using six arms in the process. Midland, meanwhile, used five pitchers in the loss.
