The Knights of Columbus annually hold a Free Throw Contest including rounds at the Council, District, Region, and State levels. This event begins in January of each year and is open to boys and girls age 10 through 14 as of the first of the year. Participants shoot in one of ten groups by sex and age.
Each Council that holds an event will crown one winner in each of the ten groups (boys 10, girls 10, boys 11, girls 11, etc.). Those winners are then eligible to participate in the District Round (typically including winners from about six Councils). District winners are then eligible to partipace in the Regional Round (typically covering the Archdiocese of Cinncinnati for us). Regional winners move on to the State Round. Finally, scores are ranked among the many State winners by age group to crown an International Winner.
The St. John Council held their first Free Throw Contest in 2006. Since that time, we have had the good fortune to have two shooter win every round including the State level. One of those was also crowned the International winner. There is plenty of good shooting at St. John!
