STANDARDS FOR MAKING THE 2012 TEAMS
The King High XC teams have a minimum ability level requirement for making the squads in 2012.
Throughout the summer camp, there will be a weekly series of 3 mile "time trials". The final one will be held on August 21st. Athletes must achieve their required mark on any one of the time trial days. Summer camp is not required, however, it is recommended in order to be physically fit. Students who opt out of the summer camp, must contest the time trial on August 21st in order to be considered for the team.
On a flat course, three miles in length, athletes must achieve the following:
9th and 10th grade rookies:
Girls must run 25:45 or faster on the course (8:35 per mile pace)
Boys must run 22:45 or faster on the course (7:35 per mile pace)
11th and 12th grader rookies:
Girls must run 24:45 or faster on the course (8:15 per mile pace)
Boys must run 21:45 or faster on the course (7:15 per mile pace)
Returning runners -- those who were on the team last year, must run with 75 seconds of their three-mile PR or faster in order to qualify. Click here to see the chart and target times. (If a returner's 2011 times + 75 seconds is slower than the rookie requirement, that returning runner must achieve the rookie standard)
In addition, athletes must:
Display a Consistent Positive Attitude - toward excellence, toward the sport, toward teammates, coaches, the community. This includes internet communication, facebook postings, twitter statements and any other "electronic" forms of displaying a negative attitude.
Display a Consistent Quality Effort in Practice. Issues that are viewed as lacking in effort include inconsistent attendance (missing lengthy periods of time to injury or non-particiaption may result in dismissal), paces in practice, inability to finish workouts, staying on a prescribed workout route, and walking in practice.
This judgement is applicable to the season specifically, but will be addressed as a concern during summer camp if the need arise.

A CHANCE TO GIVE BACK
Alec Fillmore, a King XC grad, is planning a great adventure this summer to help raise awareness and funds for the Hall Steps Foundation. The foundation is a non-profit group started by Olympic Marathoner, Ryan Hall, and it works to provide funding and support for social justice needs around the world while helping to eradicate poverty.
Alec and a friend of his are planning on running from LA to San Francisco, logging between 30 and 40 miles a day. Given his love for training at an intense level during his days at King, this sounds doable!
He's asked for our support and here's a link for you to join in the cause and donate some money. http://www.crowdrise.com/highway1runtosanfrancisco.
