When it comes to pitching - Don't overdue it!
Attention coaches, parents and pitchers:

The American Sports Medicine Institute (ASMI) conducted a recent study of youth arm injuries related to baseball and found the following:
- About half of the pitchers reported either elbow or shoulder pain as some point during the season.
- An increase in the number of pitches thrown per game and per season resulted in increased risk of shoulder or elbow pain.
- The risk was higher for those pitchers who threw breaking pitches.

Based on those findings the ASMI made the recommendations shown below for pitch counts and types of pitches thrown based on age. Note that the research indicated the number of pitches rather than number of innings was the critical factor.

Pitch Limits (Age followed by max pitches per game assuming a max of two games pitched per week)
Age: 08-10, Max Pitch Count Per Game: 50
Age: 11-12, Max Pitch Count Per Game: 70
Age: 13-14, Max Pitch Count Per Game: 75
Age: 15-16, Max Pitch Count Per Game: 90
Age: 17-18, Max Pitch Count Per Game: 105

Types of pitches (recommended age for learning pitches):
Fastball: age 8
Changeup: age 10
Curveball: age 14
Knuckleball: age 15
Slider: age 16
Forkball: age 16
Screwball: age 17

For more information see http://www.asmi.org/SportsMed/youth/baseball-youth.html . Note that this web-site also has some good information on how to evaluate a pitcher's motion with regard to proper mechanics, which will also help reduce the risk of injury.
