Fall 2013 Parents Meeting at KaHS on 8/26 at 6pm

The fall KaHS XC Parents Meeting will be on Monday 8/26 at 6pm at KaHS (the day before school starts).  We will be in either the lower Wrestling Gym or the Upper Gym.

This is also the first official day of practice; we are planning on holding two practice sessions that day, one at 7:30am at DHMS (same as all summer), and then one immediately following the Parents Meeting on Monday evening.

Note that it is EXTREMELY IMPORTANT that our runners attend at least one practice session every day from 8/26 until our first meet if you want to be eligible to run in a KaHS uniform.  Please try to plan your activities accordingly.  We will be holding a Saturday practice on 8/31 to help ensure that we have enough practices that count towards eligibility.

Runners must also have ALL of your paperwork turned into either Coach Suss or Coach Rexus before Monday 8/26 to be able to count the practice towards your eligibility.  This includes a current physical/doctor's clearance (completed within the last two years).  If you don't have a paperwork packet, please get one from Coach Suss or Coach Rexus ASAP.  You should also be able to download the forms you need from the following website address (note: be sure to open ALL of the folders and subfolders to get all of the forms that you need):

See you all at Monday night's meeting and practice.

2012 Summer Camp Update for Both Men/Women Teams

Here is the outcome from tonight's meeting for those of you who were not able to attend ...

KaHS runners who are interested in attending one of the two camps that we typically attend should sign up ASAP. Registration materials are available at the following websites:

Flathead (Bigfork, MT): http://www.fldrc.com/
Tollgate (Tollgate, OR): http://www.tollgaterun.com/

There are three sessions at Flathead, and two sessions at Tollgate; the second session of Tollgate is the "intense" camp, and is only recommended for the serious, experienced Varsity runner who can compete at the state/collegiate level.

Mary McCormick will be attending the 1st Session at Flathead, and Mark Gerboth will be attending the 2nd Session, as the "parents in charge"
Mark Gerboth will also attend the "regular" Tollgate Camp.

As previously advertised, the ladies are tryinig to attend Tollgate as their "team" camp, and about a half-dozen have also signed up for the second Flathead session - in case you want to run with teammates.

Once you have signed up your runner, please contact Heather Orren, secretary for the KaHS Distance Boosters, and let her know which camp your runner will be attending, whether you will be willing to drive, and how many kids you can take. Heather will pull together a list of who is going where so we can start sorting out rides. Heather's email address is: heatherorren@gmail.com Edit this addressRemove this address

Note that if you are volunteering for the trip to Bigfork, its a long drive, and you may want to plan on staying in Kalispell or Whitefish and taking in the sites (Glacier Park is not far away). Bigfork also runs a summer theater company that is quite good; it looks like there are some good musicals playing, and you can check out the schedule at http://bigforksummerplayhouse.com/

If you have any questions about the camps, please feel free to contact me either by email or call my cell phone: 509.942.8592.

Braves End 2011 Cross Country Season with Two Team Trophies

Saturday’s Washington State Cross Country Championships were a day of dramatic firsts for Kamiakin – as well as lasts.

Saturday saw the Braves bring home their first men’s team trophy in Coach Rexus’ twenty-four years of coaching the team, behind a phenomenal come-from-behind first place, course record finish (14:58.4) by senior Anthony Armstrong in his final race in a Kamiakin cross country uniform.  Not to be outdone, the Kamiakin women said goodbye to one of the greatest Braves of all time, senior Stephanie Rexus, who clocked a personal best of 18:15 for 5km on the tough state course to help spur the Lady Braves on to a fourth place team finish, and the first back-to-back podium finishes in the program’s history.

Overall, it was a great day to be a Brave, with Kamiakin’s 3rd place men’s finish and the women’s 4th place trophy making them one of the few schools to place both of their teams on the podium.

Although both teams had hoped to finish higher on the stand, nobody can say that they didn’t give it their all – especially the Braves who posted personal best times for the day. This included not only Rexus but freshman Natalie Cory (20:03.8) for the women, and brothers Garret Kraal (16:17.7) and Taylor Kraal (16:07.6) for the men.  Junior Michelle Fletcher contributed a season’s best performance (18:54.4).

A good end to a great season, as we say goodbye to the following seniors: Anthony Armstrong, Taylor Kraal, Jonathan Meng, Kevin Paulson, Kyle Paulson, Austin Richards, Phil Snyder, Chad Vickery, Sydney Blaser, Erica Colvin, and Stephanie Rexus.  Good luck to you all – and please don’t snicker too loudly as you pass us old folks on the local citizen’s race circuit!

Kamiakin Women Win 2011 CBBN/GSL Regional Title

The Kamiakin women threw down an impressive performance at the region meet in Spokane, winning the Region title for the first time in eight years with a decisive 31-63 showing over defending regional champions and state runners-up Shadle Park.  In a race that perfectly executed the team's strategy, the women placed all five of their scoring runners in the top 15 finishers, led by a 3rd place finish by senior Stephanie Rexus and a personal best performance (20:21 for 5km) by freshman Natalie Cory.

The Kamiakin men placed all five of their scoring runners in the top 20 and finished second, only only two points behind defending state and regional champions North Central of Spokane.

On the women's side, Kamiakin will advance to the state finals along with Shadle Park and Mt Spokane.  For the men, North Central, Kamiakin, and Mt Spokane will advance.  The CBBN and GSL schools and any individual runners who finished in the top 15 at the Regional meet will compete in a field of 16 schools from around the state at the Sun Willows Golf Course on Saturday, November 5th.  All meet details, including a listing of all team and individual qualifiers, race schedules, and a course map can be found at www.jcrawford.net

See you at State!!!

KaHS XC Ends 2011 District Season on a High Note

The final three weeks of the regular season were a crescendo to a high note for the Braves.

In the final four races of the season, 59 of the 63 men and women on the roster posted either seaon's best or personal best times, with 52 of these being personal bests.

In their final appearance of the season, the JV Men dominated the District Championships.  In addition to a first place finish by Phil Snyder, the KaHS men went on to take not only the top 13 finishing spots, but 16 out of the top 20 slots, with all 16 finishing under 18:00 on the 3 mile course.  This performance was not only good for top honors for the JV, but also would have earned the KaHS JV a second place finish in the Men's Varsity race.

The JV Women were also clearly the class of the field at the District Championships, placing nine runners in the top 20 finishers, behind JV champion Jori Perrins.

The Varsity men cruised to District Championship victory with a perfect score of 15.  The Varsity women also won their District title, with a score of 26.

The team is looking forward to carrying this same intensity on to the Regional meet in Spokane on October 29th, where the Men will face off against Eastern Washington rivals North Central in what promises to be a very close match for the Regional championship. The Women will go up against reigning State 3A runners-up Shadle Park, and a resurgent Mt Spokane team for the Region crown.

Update - Tomorrow's JV Friendly Meet at Hanford Home Course
Sorry, this JV-focused meet was a late addition to our schedule, and crept up on me while I was busy with a few other things.  The races will be at 5:00pm for the girls, and 5:45 pm for the guys.  Those who are racing are encouraged to find their own rides directly to Leslie Groves Park - Girls to be there by 3:45pm, guys can get there a little bit later.  Those who are not racing will be meeting at KaHS at 3pm (normal time) and driving over to Leslie Groves to run a workout along the river.

At the Eastern Washington Regional meet, both our boys and girls teams were hampered by injuries and off-days for key runners; our girls finished 6th overall, and our boys 7th.  Two of the boys, Evan Fiske and Anthony Armstrong, qualified for State as individuals.

At State, Evan turned in a 15:56 for 5km, good enough for a 16th place finish overall and a trip to the Nike Border Clash meet at the Nike campus in Beaverton, where he finished 63rd overall.  Anthony finished 30th at state, with a time of 16:11 - an impressive achievement for a freshman.

Congratulations to all for a great 2008 season - and here's looking forward to 2009!

Updated Results - 10/1/08 to 10/19/08

Our boys and girls teams have closed out the Dual Meet season, both capturing 3rd place in the Big 9 with 11-2 records.  The boys finished behind Eisenhower and Southridge, and the girls behind Richland and Davis.

At the Sunfair Invitational (10/4), the Boys finished 11th out of 59 teams competing, and finished 10th out of 25 teams in the 4A division.  The Girls finished 9th out of 40 teams overall, and 6th out of 21 teams in the 4A division.  In five of the six flights where the girls ran, they placed a runner in the top 10 finishers.  This was an outstanding performance by both teams in this Northwest headliner event.

At the Richland Invitational (10/11), the Boys placed 10th out of 26 teams competing, and the girls finished 6th out of 23 teams.  This race provided both the boys and the girls with their first view this season of the course that will be used for Regionals.

At the final Big 9 League meet on 10/16, the Boys narrowly lost to Southridge by a score of 29 to 27.  The Girls achieved a landmark by having their front five runners all finish the three mile course with times well under the 20 minute mark!

Both teams are now looking forward to the Big 9 District meet, and the District 5/6/8 Regional meet.

Updated Results 9/20/08 - 9/30/08

Both our boys and girls teams have closed out a busy September.  At the Highlander Invitational on September 20th in Spokane, the Kamiakin girls Varsity took 4th place overall behind Davis, Deer Park, and Mead.  In the boys races, Kamiakin's Freshman took the top team honors, and came in 2nd overall in the Junior Boys race.  Pooling the top 5 times for each school in each of the boy's races (not an "official" score for this invitational's format), the Kamiakin boys were 3rd, behind Mead (last year's state champions) and Southridge.

On September 27th, the girls competed in the Bellevue Invitational, held at Lake Sammamish State Park in Issaquah.  Due to injuries, the team ran with less than the 8 varsity runners required for top placing with this meet's 8 runner scoring format; however, our girls still managed a 6th place finish overall, with at least one girl scoring in the Top 10 finishers in each of the varsity flights where we were entered.  Many of our varsity and JV runners also ran some of their best times for the year so far at this race!

During the September 30th CBBN League Meet at Eastmont, the boy's Varsity beat each of the three teams that they were scored against (Moses Lake, Richland, and Pasco).  The girls Varsity split against the two teams they were scored against, beating Moses Lake but losing to a dominant Richland team.

Next on the schedule - the Sunfair Invitational at Franklin Park in Yakima on October 4th, and the Richland Invitational at Carmichael Middle School in Richland on October 11th.

Results for Week Ending September 19th
Both our boys and girls got off to a great start this season.  Although the Capital Invite meet is not "officially" team scored, the girls came in second only to Gig Harbor by placing two runners in the top 15 places in each of the races they ran.  The boys finished behind Jackson and Gig Harbor, led by an impressive 1-2 finish by Anthony Armstrong and Austin Richards in the Freshman race.  Our strength in this meet was good enough for a 4th place ranking for the boys in the 4A Coaches poll for the week, and a 5th place ranking for the girls.  On a hot and hilly Sunfair 3 Mile course in Yakima, the girls finished second only to Davis during Tuesday's CBBN League meet, and the boys finishing second behind Eisenhower.  On to this Saturday's Highlander Invitational!
