Click handouts to download the flier today!
Saturday, November 7
Special Thanks you to Falcon Organizers
The Eagles Board would like to thank Al Storch and Doug Hicks for keeping our Fall Falcons Program on track for 3 years. This is an important fall program for our team and the effort by these volunteers is one of the ingredients of success for our team during the regular season.
Both of these volunteers have seniors on the team this year. If this fall program is to continue it will need a volunteer willing to organize and coordinate efforts through the Coaching staff to run this fall program. Under MHSAA rules, Coaches cannot have contact with players in groups for any type of practice or workouts for any sport season prior to tryouts. The Eagles have been very fortunate to have willing volunteers to work this program to the benefit of our team. If you have a younger player on the team and are interested, please talk to one of these men, AL or Doug, or any Eagles board member for more information. Friday, November 6

Six Eagles Invited to Team West Michigan Tryouts
This past weekend, six Eagles players were invited to the Team West Michigan Tryouts in Grand Rapids. The tryouts were for experienced players and required an invitation to attend. This team had over 120 players trying for just 22 roster positions. Players were from over 22 different high schools located in Southwest Michigan (mostly Grand Rapids, Muskegon, and Kalamazoo area). This should be seen as a tribute to the growth of high school hockey in our area. Monday, August 3
Summer Hockey Finishes Strong
Congratulations to all the players this summer for a fun and exciting summer hockey season. The Eagles won every game but one this summer! A special thank you to all the parent volunteers who stepped up to fill in doing scorekeeping, time clock running and penalty box helper during the summer season. Parent volunteers are the heart of our organization and we are grateful for the many willing parents/guardians.
The 2009-10 season will be here before we know it. Scheduling is almost complete and workout times and events are being planned for the fall season. Our team manager, Lisa Miller, sent an email out to all summer players about the West Michigan Development League that is run in October. It is a fun and very competitive way for the players to be on the ice with other high school players from the Kalamazoo and Grand Rapids area. It is so good to have such willing parents to do behind the scenes work to support this team and its coaches! REMEMBER: Tryouts for the regular season will be the week of November 2, 2009. Due to unforseen problems at the league level; some game times had to be changed and Saturday, July 11 games had to be recheduled to July 18. Team manager, Lisa Miller, will update all team members via an email. The handout for the league schedule on this site has been changed to the most recent update from SWMHSHL commissioner, Frank Noonan. The schedule can also be found on the league website - www.swmhshl.org. Special note: no stats or team rosters are listed for summer hockey play. The team make up changes and stats are not even kept at the league level. These items are reserved for the regular season play. Monday, June 15

A complete summer schedule can be found on the league website (www.swmhshl.org). You can also click on handouts to your left and see the same schedule. Players and parents will be notified each week as to the time that their player will be playing. WATCH YOUR EMAILS - this is the way team info is given and it is an effective means of communications for our team.
Players are asked to make sure that Coach Brown in notified at least a week in advance if they are planning to be gone for any of the games. The league can only play until July 31 to comply with MHSAA rules. PARENTS: the team MUST have score keepers/time clock operators to play each week. An email was sent asking for volunteers to work. If you have not sent in your time to volunteer, please do so today. Without volunteers - we CANNOT play. This team's success is because of the willingness of ALL parents to do their part and make sure these players are supported on and off the ice. REMEMBER: summer high school hockey should be fun and is considered as recreational. Playing on the team for summer does not imply a position for any player for the regular season for 2009-10. Fall tryouts will begin the week of November 2, ice times and costs will be announced here as soon as they are available. SEE YOU AT THE RINK! GO EAGLES!! Monday, June 8

New to High School Hockey? Here is how it works!
Is your player entering high school in the fall? Or did your player play in another team for the last season and is looking to play high school hockey this year? Here is how high school hockey basically works:
How much does high school hockey cost? For the last few years, the cost is in the area of $1600-1800 per player. There are several areas of fund raising that can significantly lower this cost to families. Most specifically the league yearbook. This is similar to the KOHA yearbook program and is a significant source of funds to many parents on our team and in the league. Monday, April 20

Grand Haven Out Works Eagles
With the 2008-09 season winding down, the Eagles were hoping to travel to the Edge in Holland to come home with a win.
The game started pretty even, both teams hustling to pucks, skating through center ice and the Eagles were following the team theme - "Protect the House". With just over half of the period gone, the Grand Haven Bucaneers struck first during 4 on 4 play. Tom Grieves, in net for the first time in many games, did very well to give his team a chance to kick start their goal scoring. The start of the second was the undoing of the Eagles. The Bucaneers scored twice during the period, with one of those being a power play goal. The Eagles did manage to get one goal - Garrett Hudson sent a shot from the point to get his first goal as an Eagle. It was scored as unassisted. Ending the second stanza with the Eagles down 3-1. The third period was not much better for the team. Allow too many shots on Grieves and taking unnecessary penalites was the undoing in this game. The highlight of the final stanza was Levi Leversee getting a goal while down low, his first power play goal. The assists were credited to Kyle Pavlack and Zach Corliss. The Bucaneers closed out the game with 3 more goals in the third. The final score was 6-2 in favor of the home team. Grieves faced 29 shots, while the Eagles managed 15 shots for the game. The Eagles will attend their final tournament of the season March 6-8 in Grand Rapids. They are part of the Spring Showdown hosted by Big Bear Tournaments. Schedules have not been given, however, should arrive before the first of the week and will be posted here as soon as they are available. Team members will receive an email as well. Let's hope some well deserved time off this weekend and a couple of practices next week will be what the team needs - as many as 6 players are still battling flu-like symptoms. This team has worked hard to have a great record this seasaon: 15-10 overall.
Five Eagles Earn League Honors
After the disappointment of losing the championship, the league handed out the hardware to players in the league. Five Eagles players earned recognition by the league and Coach Brown was selected to share the 'Coach of the Year' honor!

We would also like to honor our seniors on this team - Captain-Zack Mutual, Asst Captain-Tyler Tankersley and Tom Muma! It has been a privelege to have you as part of the Eagles program! Our team is planning on a season ending party soon! As soon as plans are complete each team member will be notified by email of all details! Stay tuned....

Eagles Exhaustion and Illness a Factor in Championship Game
It was on everyone's mind...could the Eagles come back and win after the emotional win just 2 days earlier!? With several players battling flu like symptoms, it would be a mountain that this team would have to climb.
Within a few minutes of the puck drop at 7 pm in the Annex, it was clear that Joe Ballmer was going to have to be stellar in net again to help his team get going. Mattawan was skating hard and beating the Eagles to many of the puck battles in the corners and around the net. With over half of the first period gone, Mattawan found the chink in Ballmer's armor and found the back of the net. The Eagles held on but couldn't muster much of a fight for the Mattawan Wildcats that seemed to have the goal of winning the Tournament! The Wildcats scored 3 more goals before the end of the game. The lone goal of the night for the Eagles was scored by David Watson at the 10:14 mark of the thrid period, it was a power play goal. AJ Hammond got the assist. Ballmer did his best, by stopping 47 of the 51 shots he faced. The Eagles only managed 18 shots for three periods. It was clear that this team was not at its best - exhaustion and flu-like symptoms were a factor on this night. This team - its players and coaches - should be congratulated on a GREAT season! To be a contender on any given night in league play and to make it to this championship game is something to be proud of! With many players expected to return next year and only losing three players as seniors - this team has something to look forward to!! The parents and fans of these players and coaches are very proud of the effort, teamwork, and grace when losing that they have shown throughout the season! THANKS for a GREAT year!! The Eagles do have 1 more game next week, February 25 in Holland and a tournament March 6-8 in Grand Rapids before taking some time off to prepare for the 2009-2010 season! We would like to thank our fans, family and the students at the schools who have come to the games this year and supported these athletes and coaches!
5OT Win Stuns League Champs
After the marathon 3 1/2 hour game Thursday evening, all Coach Brown could say was "Amazing". This game was a test of wills and goal tending.
EAGLES WIN!!! CHAMPIONSHIPS HERE WE COME!!
While this game was not a MHSAA record, it was for the SWMHSHL game. Joe Ballmer faced 63 shots only allowing 1 goal for the game! The Eagles had 26 shots, with 2 goals. It was excitement for everyone that stayed until almost midnight to see the Eagles gain their first victory over league champion, Portage Central. It has been many years since the Eagles have had the privilege to play in the championship game and it will be played against cross town rival, Mattawan. These two teams have only met once this year, with the Eagles earning the win 2-1. Game time is 7 pm on Saturday, February 21, 2009 in the Annex. Friday, February 20
Eagles Defeat Goliath to Advance to League Championship

A full article with game highlights will be posted tomorrow!! CONGRATULATIONS EAGLES!! League Championship is Saturday, February 21 at 7 pm vs Mattawan in the Annex at Wings Stadium. Eagles Begin Prep Work for 2009-10 Season
The Eagles volunteeer board is starting its work for the next season, first by electing new members and second, getting ready to do an early summer golf fund raising outing.
First, the Eagles current parents have elected the following individuals to serve as their volunteer board members for the 2009-10 season: Mike Corliss-President, Lori Vigen-Asst. Board Chairperson, Lisa Miller-team manager, Ron Pavlack-Athletic Director, Beth Grieves-Secretary, Dave Ballmer-treasurer, and Jon Mutual-member at large. We would like to thank the 2008-09 board for their service this year. While Lori Vigen and Jon Mutual will remain on the board in new positions, we thank Doug Tankersley for his service this year as our Athletic director. Without volunteers - the Eagles team could not support it's coaching staff and players. Second, the work begins on next season! Ron Pavlack is working to put together a team fund raiser - a golf outing! It is set as June 20 at the Prairies (on West Main St). With a lot of work to be done, only a few details are known at this time: Shot gun start for the four person team is at approximately 2 pm. Cost: $60-$70 per player. Championship Game a Thriller
The Eagles made it to the finals of the McMichigan Cup and put on a defensive battle that was exciting to watch for all the fans in attendance. Their opponent was the Rockford High School Rams.
The puck dropped at 3:30 and each team played a defensive battle to set the tone of the game and try to find a way to get the puck to the net. The first goal of the game was from Mitch Evarts from the point. He took the shot from the point and for once the Eagles got the lucky bounce off the goal tender and this game was 1-0 in favor of the Eagles. Just two minutes later the Rams tied the game while on the power play. The second period was total defense and goal tending. Each team managed low shot counts, Eagles 3 and Rams 6. However, the Eagles were the one to step up and break the tie. AJ Hammond found the puck just inside the defensive blue line and dangled his way through the defense to score in close. Less than a minute later, the Rams broke free on a breakway that found the puck in Joe Ballmer's glove! Eagles still on top after two periods. With the score in favor of the Eagles, the Rams pressed hard and often. Defense and goal tending were doing a great job. With just 2:26 left in the game, the Rams tied the game. The heartbreaker came just 13 seconds later - 3-2 Rams. Eagles Coach Brown called time out with 1:45 left on the clock. Getting the team a rest and giving instructions to get Ballmer to the net for the extra attacker. Once the puck was deep in the zone, the Eagles swarmed the Ram net, but to no avail. A loose puck was sent to the empty net, sealing the championship victory for the Rams. The Eagles only had 8 shots for the third period, finishing the game with 20 shots on net. Ballmer faced 14 of his 29 shots for the game during the third period, allowing only 3 goals for the game. This game also saw the Eagles playing tough defense while staying out of the penalty box, only 2 penalties were assessed to the team for the whole game, a total of 4 minutes. While this loss was a painful one, this team should be proud of its accomplishments this weekend. Coming away as 2nd place, playing total team defense and the preparation for the league tournament. - should be seen as 'Mission Accomplished'. Team motto ('Protect the house') was evident in each game, team work and communication was clearly the goal of each well played game. Coming away from the tournament would have been nice; Eagles pride and class were evident in each game. These tournament games should be well remembered as preparation for the upcoming league tournament to begin on February 16, back at the Annex at Wings Stadium. Game times and opponents of the Eagles will be announced by the league after the final league scheduled game (February 11). Check here for more information - it will be posted as soon as the team gets it.

Portage Central Outworks Eagles in Final League Game of Season
The final regular season game was all Portage Central Mustangs, with a final score of 4-1. The Mustangs came out with intensity and speed that the Eagles seemed to match up and work against during the first period. However, the second stanza was the Eagles undoing for this game. They found themselves on the penalty kill twice, which allowed the potent offense of the Mustangs to take a 2-0 lead. This game just was all Mustangs from that point on. The hard work and tenacity of assistant captain, Tyler Tankersley, broke the shut out for the Mustangs. With just seconds left in the game, Tankersley found himself in the high slot with a great shot at their goalie. The assists were credited to AJ Hammond and David Watson. This was credited as a short handed goal, as the Eagles were on a 5 on 3 power play. Friday, January 30
Eagles Back on Track
Wednesday evening the Eagles faced cross town foes, Portage Northern. With two recent losses on their mind, the Eagles came to the ice with one thing in mind: WIN.
The team came out with the team motto ('Protect the House') clearly part of the game plan. With team work and effort from everyone that touched the ice, this win was what this team needed. It took over 11 minutes for the Eagles to swarm the Huskies net and get the first goal of the contest Brian Storch found the puck loose on the left side below the goal line and headed toward the right with a wrap around goal between the pads of the Northern goalie. Defense then moved to the front of the priority list for our team. Joe Ballmer set the tone for the rest of the game by stopping a breakaway chance by the Huskies with just 45 seconds left in the first period. Both teams were concentrated on defense and moving the puck to their own zone. With the Eagles on a penalty kill half way through the second, Bobby Miller went to work. He stole the puck from the Huskies at center ice and dangled his way through both defenders to send the puck top shelf - SCORE! Four minutes later, also while on the penalty kill, Miller tried the moves a second time and they WORKED - Eagles 3 - Northern 0. Miller was later quoted that he dedicated this game to his late grandfather, William Miller, who had passed away just a week ago. The third period was a real test of wills and the ability to stay out of the penalty box. The game intensity continued to rise until with just 2:48 the Huskies found a way to break the shut out. The Eagles were not going to let this one get away and played their defensive systems as they have practiced and held on for the win. Joe Ballmer saw plenty of action that third period, facing 9 of the 22 shots for the game in the third stanza. The Eagles put up 28 shots on the Huskies net, scoring 3 times. While this victory was a total team effort and felt great, they were using this as a warm up for their final league game of the season vs the Portage Central Mustangs on Saturday, January 31 at 4 pm in the Annex at Wings Stadium. These two teams met at their first league games back in November, which found the Mustangs coming out on top 3-2. The Eagles will be working hard to hand the Mustangs their second loss of the season (the first was a week ago, when Mattawan beat the Mustangs) and the first for the Eagles to win over the Mustangs in recent team history. With a whole season to get ready, this game proves to be a crowd pleaser for all in attendance. FILL THOSE STANDS WITH LOUD EAGLES FANS!! See you at the rink.... Friday, January 30

Visiting Utica-Stevenson played the Eagles a tough contest that found them in the losing column for their second straight loss. United Defeats the Eagles on Saturday Evening
On Saturday, January 17, the Eagles suffered a painful loss to the Kalamazoo United, 3-1. Both teams fought hard and on this night, the Eagles didn't get the bounces they needed for the win.
Defensive zone breakdowns and less than crisp passing by the Eagles on this night, allowed the United capitalized and scored first in this game. While at the end of the first, the United were up on the score board, this Eagles team needed a quick goal to tie the game at the beginning of the second. Brian Storch provided that goal on a low shot in the slot area. Zach Corliss gave Storch the puck on a nice pass deep within the United defensive territory. Joe Ballmer seemed poised to back stop his team to another league win this season, however the feisty United team had other ideas. Both of the teams started the third stanza with one goal in mind - score first and stay ahead. Eagles gave the United an opportunity to get their first win by allowing too many men on the ice with just 5 minutes gone in the third and the game tied at one. Coach Brown again pulled Ballmer with 29 seconds left in the game. However, a well placed puck found the net and sealed the game for the United. Ballmer faced 30+ shots in this game. While this loss was painful to this team, coaches and its fans - the United earned a long awaited victory in league play. Congrats to them! The Eagles next game is Friday, January 23 vs Utica Stevenson at S2 (formerly known as Twin Star) Ice Arena. Let's fill those stands with Eagles fans and get this team back in the WIN column!! See you at the rink.... Monday, January 26

This event is set up to respect and honor the alumni of this league that are currently serving or have served in the USA's armed services. An email was sent to all known members of the Eagles that are serving (or have served), and those gentleman are invited to attend this evening. All Eagles alumni names that are known will be read at the pre-game ceremony. Known Alumni that are currently serving: Dave Browning (Army), Josh Browning (Army), Grant Johnson (Marines), Justin Thompson (Marines), Cole Warner (Coast Guard), and Tom Vigen (Marines). This league has many, many members that have gone on to serve this country. We have also seen a few lose their lives while defending the freedom that all Americans enjoy. The Wildcats lost a friend and alumni - Jimmy Arnold, Army - a few years ago while he was serving in Iraq. This event is sponsored by the Wildcats and KU Warriors. Current Eagles players are expected to attend the brief ceremony (30-45 minutes), wearing team warm ups and sitting together. This event takes place directly after the practice on January 7. January 12 will be Parent Night and Skills Competition for the players. This event will be held in Wings Stadium and will begin promptly at 6:15 pm. While details of the event have not been sent to respective teams as of this note being posted, all players/parents will be notified as soon as all the details are sent out. This evening is being billed as a great time for all players and should provide some great High School Hockey entertainment.

Disappointing Loss to Manistee
With the Christmas paper still in the recycle bin and tinsel still on the tree, the Eagles traveled to Grand Rapids to open the Lowell/Caledonia Christmas Tournament against Manistee. The first period was a stalemate in scoring for both teams. Defense was key and Joe Ballmer did an excellent job keeping his team in the game. When the second period started, the team was on a mission to get a goal on the board. While on the power play at the 45 second mark, AJ Vigen got the puck at the face off dot on the right side deep in the defensive zone. He saw Bobby Miller was not being covered at center ice and sent him a pass that allowed him to put the puck in the net. Miller then stole the puck just 3 minutes later; his shot provided a juicy rebound for Brian Storch to send to the back of the net through the pads of the Manistee goalie. Manistee controlled most of the play in the second period, but only managed to score once. Shots at the end of 2 periods were: Manistee 22, Eagles 12. The Eagles came out a little flat for the final stanza and found themselves on the losing side of this game, with a final score of 3-2. Ballmer faced 31 shots for the game, while the Eagles only had 19 shots on the game. This loss was only the third loss for this team this season. The Eagles will face the Northwest Warriors on Saturday, December 27 at 4 pm in the Consolation game for the tournament. Monday, December 29
Eagles Still in Win Column
Just 3 days before Christmas, the Eagles continued their winning ways against South Christian with a final score of 9-2. Monday, December 22
Eagles Blank Kalamazoo United
The Eagles continued their winning ways Saturday evening by defeating the Kalamazoo United Warriors in a shut out 4-0.
The third period was all Eagles, out shooting the Warriors 12-5 with two unassisted goals from Bobby Miller and Paul Townsend. Just over 2 minutes into the third, Bobby Miller picked off an errant pass by the Warriors and went to the net. His 'snipe' was the 3rd goal of the game and was scored on the power play. The final score of the night was by Paul Townsend that came with half of the third period to go. Townsend took the shot from the side boards and sent it top shelf to finish the scoring for the game.

Winning Tradition Continues Against Mattawan
When the puck dropped on Saturday, December 13, the Eagles had one thing in mind...WIN AGAIN! The Eagles began their winning tradition against the Mattawan Wildcats 3 years ago on the exact same date. The 2-1 Eagles win was the same score as it was that night three years ago as well. This win was not going to be easy. However, it took the Eagles just 2:42 to score short handed. Tyler Tankersley read the play and took it down the ice, allowing Paul Townsend to get set up in the low slot area to score the first goal of the game. For the next several minutes, Joe Ballmer made some highlight reel saves to keep his team in the lead. With less than a minute left in the first period, the Eagles created traffic in front of the net and Zach Corliis scored their second of the night. The second period was a test of defense and stellar play by the Eagles netminder, Ballmer. Team effort and communication on the ice were the keys to this game. Mattawan scored their lone goal of the game just 1:15 into the game. The final stanza of this game was a wild one and great fun for the fans to watch...definitely not sitting down! The Eagles played excellent defense, even killing a 4 on 3 halfway through the period. With just 2:09 left in the game and a Wildcat in the box, the Eagles went to work on the power play. At the 1:37 mark the Wildcats pulled their goalie to equalize the ice in hopes of scoring a goal to tie the game and force overtime. Ballmer completed his stellar play by facing 4 shots during that time. Allowing the Eagles to storm the ice and enjoy this hard fought win. Ballmer faced 39 shots for the game - allowing only 1 goal; while the Eagles only put 15 shots on net. The first two shots on net resulted in goals for the Eagles on this night. The Eagles will face the Kalamazoo Blades for the first time on Wednesday, December 17 at 8:00 pm in the Annex. This game is a warm up for the January 10th game - RIVAL CUP - between these two teams. (Game time for the Rival Cup is 8 pm in the Annex) With the Eagles coming off a very emotional win, the team hopes to feed off the hard work and total team effort to continue their winning ways in league play. League record is 2-1. The Blades will look to put forward a better effort after a long game following the Eagles last Saturday, with a 4-3 late overtime win against the Kalamazoo United. Show your support of these athletes and coaches - fill the stands with NOISY Eagles fans!! SEE YOU AT THE RINK! Monday, December 8
Eagles Defense Leads Team in Scoring

Eagles Get First League Win vs PN Huskies
Wednesday the Eagles got their first league win against the Portage Northern Huskies in the Annex. Both teams started this game with tough defense keeping the first period scoreless and the fans on the edge of their seats. With just 29 seconds left in the period, Eagles net minder, Joe Ballmer, made a save during a Huskie power play to keep his team from falling down by a goal. The defense was stellar during the power play, allowing only 2 shots. The second period was plenty of defense as well, until the 5:40 mark when Bobby Miller intercepted a pass at center ice while on the penalty kill and took it to the goal. The rebound went directly to Matt Hicks stick in the slot to score the first goal of the game. With just 1:19 left in the period, Paul Townsend read the center ice play and stole the puck and raced to the goal. The Husky goalie, Bill Naylor, gave another easy rebound to Zack Mutual in the slot area which he sent to the back of the net. This put the Eagles up 2-0 to end the period. The Eagles had to come out for the final stanza and play tough defense to protect their lead. The Huskies were not going to back down and got their only goal of the game at the 13:38 mark. With 1:50 left on the clock, Joe Ballmer had to come up with a great glove save to keep his team on top. With less than a minute left on the clock, the Huskies pulled their goalie and the defense had to go to work. They held on and won an important game in league play. Joe Ballmer faced 23 shots on net. While the Eagles posted 33 shots on Portage Northern for the evening. Total team effort and communication on the ice between players and their net minder is what this team exhibited to get this win. The team is looking to continue their winning ways on Friday evening at Southside when they play Wayland for the first time this season. Game time is 9 pm. Hope to see you there!! Fill those stands with Eagles fans! Friday, December 5

GO EAGLES!!

After Thanksgiving Tradition Continues...Too Much Turkey??
The Eagles continued their after Thanksgiving 'tradition' in losing a heartbreaker in OT to Jenison on Friday 3-2. The day after Thanksgiving has not been kind to the Eagles for the last 4 years. The Eagles came out and played tough defense against a bigger team - the average size of players from Jenison was 20-50 pounds heavier and 3-6 inches taller than most Eagles team members. While the Wildcats struck first, the Eagles didn't wait long to light the 'juice lamp'. While on a power play, Kyle Pavlack sent a cross ice pass to fellow defenseman, Mitch Evarts, who took a shot that had a direct rebound to the tape of David Watson's stick while he was camped out at the top of the crease. The first period was a battle of defense and will for both teams. Ending in a 1-1 tie. The Eagles started the second period short handed by 2 players for a minute and fifteen seconds. They managed to kill off that and play consistent defense for the remainder of the second period, with the hopes that the third would be the start of good things. Less than 5 minutes into the period, Captain Zack Mutual read the pass coming across the center on a dump in for the Wildcats. His goal (unassisted) put the Eagles on top 2-1. Unfortunately for the Eagles, the Jenison Wildcats were not going away quietly. They scored with 5 minutes left in the period to tie the game and send it to sudden death overtime. The Eagles fell in OT just 20 seconds in...'tradition' continues. Goaltender Tom Grieves faced 23 shots, while the Eagles put up 21 shots on Jenison. The Eagles face a new team from Benzie County, the Northwest Warriors, on Saturday at 1:00 in the Annex to play for the 3rd place trophy. SEE YOU THERE!! Sunday, November 23
Portage Central Game a Penalty Filled Fiasco
With the SWMHSHL kicking off, both team came out ready to play an intense game with lots of action. Within just minutes, both teams were racking up penalties and trying to find a way to win the game. Eagles were sent to a 5 on 3 defense less than a minute into the game. With good defense keeping shots away from goaltender, Joe Ballmer, and quick feet, the Mustangs were only allowed 2 shots during those first two penalties. The Eagles drew first blood in this contest at the 6:32 mark when Bobby Miller, Matt Hicks and Zack Corliss took advantage of an odd man rush. Miller stuffed the puck in the five hole for the first goal of the game. Not to be outdone, the Mustangs scored their own goal just 1 minute later. This period was finished with defensive coverage at our blue line. Tyler Tankersley worked hard on the blue line and created a 2 on 1 short handed opportunity that went just wide of the goal with just 2:30 to go in the period. The second period started the revolving door of the penalty box for both teams. Most of the rest of the game was spent by special teams seeing most of the action. With a 4 on 3 advantage and the Eagles set up to shoot - AJ Hammond fired a shot in close from a quick pass from Brian Storch and Mitch Evarts. The revolving door at the 'sin bin' continued allowing the Mustangs to capitalize 2 times before the period was over and the Eagles down 3-2 to end the period. The third period was a disaster for both teams and didn't allow for much flow to the game. With just 1:23 left in the game and the Eagles on a power play, Joe Ballmer headed for the bench to give the team the extra attacker. While the effort was there, the puck stayed out of the net and the Mustangs remained undefeated in league play. Final score was 3-2. Joe Ballmer did an outstanding in job net, facing 24 shots and only allowing 3. The Eagles did get off 17 shots, however only getting 2 in the back of the net. The next game action for the Eagle will be the day after Thanksgiving at the Kalamazoo United Tournament. While we are not sure of the name of our opponent for the first game, we are schedule to play at 1:00 pm at the Annex on Friday, November 28. The second game of the tournament will be on Saturday, November 29 at 1:00, the opponent of this game will be determined by play in the first game. The Eagles look to get back in the win column this weeekend and ready for their next league game on December 3 vs Portage Northern. See you at the rink....GO EAGLES!! |
