Justin Sheftel Memorial Scholarship Application

Justin Sheftel Memorial Scholarship Award-- This year there will be two Scholarships of $7,500 each awarded to a graduating boy and girl, application Deadline is April 3, 2009.

Justin Sheftel was tragically killed by a drunk driver while celebrating Senior Week. We are awarding this scholarship to honor Justin, his life and keep his memory alive. The ideal candidate would possess many of the characteristics and qualities that Justin exhibited in his life.

One of his best friends presented the scholarship last year, and put into words the type of candidate that would best meet the qualifications.   “This award is an un-common award.  What makes this scholarship unique is that when looking for the most deserving candidate, one must take a step back and recite the acronym “WWJD”- What Would Justin Do? This scholarship is intended for those individuals whose choices and passions reflect those of Justin Sheftel.  Some words I can use to describe him include cool, and calm. I remember him as reserved and pensive at times, but also openly silly and he had a great sense of humor.  He worked hard in everything he did and received good grades, Sat scores, but it didn’t stop there.  He worked hard for everything, and even if he wasn’t a natural, he worked to develop his skills- not only in sports but in all aspects of life.  He was the first of my friends to ever hold a paying job.  The Justin Sheftel Memorial Scholarship rewards those individuals who have the humility to be a team player, and yet possess the passion to keep on going even when the best is out there playing. It rewards the ones who might be rendered invisible when only the best of the best are considered on paper, but who in reality, have just as much personal drive as the greatest who ever played.  I remember hearing about Justin not making the baseball team his freshman year of high school team, but I’m pretty sure that reaffirmed his love and passion for the game.  And individuals like Justin keep on going even when there might be someone better out there, because they possess the optimism of self betterment and the enjoyment of living every single day of life. “   Alex Ullman, 2005 Emmaus High School Graduate, Univ. of Penn.   So we are looking for the uncommon hero, hard worker, friend and good student who demonstrates these characteristics.    Interested candidates must:
  • Be a senior who will be graduating from Parkland in June 2009 and attending a College or University in the fall of 2009
  • Have been active in a Parkland Athletic Club or Team for a number of years
  • Have a cumulative GPA of 3.6 or better
  • Be involved in extra-curricular activities either in the Parkland School District, or in the community, (a job would be considered extra curricular)
  • Complete the attached application  (download)
  • Submit three letters of recommendation pertaining to the applicant’s character and personality, at least two should be from teachers or a guidance counselor.
  • A one page essay should be attached, see below for subject matter

Tell us about yourself; how you feel you best portray those characteristics that were recognized in Justin by his peers.  Explain how you have a passion for something and have continued to pursue, learn and explore to become better at what you do and love.
Download a copy of the scholarship application, the application must be in by April 03rd to Eric Roberts at PHS.  Go to the Handouts section to view and download.
