PLAYER OF THE WEEK
Hunter C

The final week of the regular season's POW goes to HUNTER CAMERON! Some kids dream about what Hunter was able to accomplish with one swing of the bat. It may be considered the biggest hit of the season because it was all about being part of a team. It was about one player picking another player. It was about the crowd cheering with excitement.

It was the top of the 6th. There were 2 outs. The Cards were trailing the Mariners 5-4. Jackson Pavitt stood on 3rd. One of the best pitchers in the league, Kyle Gould, stood on the mound. On an 0-1 count, Hunter came up HUGE with a deep line drive that bounced over the fence a ground rule double that scored the tieing run. Pinch runner Nick Stewart scored the go ahead run on a single up the middle by Jake Macaulay. Jack Grummett pitched a great game lasting 5 2/3's innings before Trey Williams came in for the save. Final score: Cardinals 6 Mariners 5

PLAYER OF THE WEEK
Kurt Pitching
This week's Player of the Week award goes to.....KURT VANDOR! In 2 games the Cards went 1-1, Vandor went a combined 4-8 with 5 RBIs and 1 run. Vandor has a strong .370 batting average for the season and 9 RBIs which leads the team. Equally impressive is his pitching. Kurt pitched in both games giving up only 1 earned run in each appearance. Overall for the season, Kurt is 1-0 with 1 save, a 2.73 ERA and an incredible 25 strikeouts in only 11 innings pitched. Way to go Smokin' Kurt! Keep up the great effort!

Vandor commented after the loss on Saturday versus the A's, "Offensively, I'm getting comfortable with driving the ball and not just making contact. As for pitching, I've been able to come in either mid to late game situations and throw strikes. I'm just happy Coach John has shown the confidence in me to pitch in key situations in the games we've played. But overall it's not about my individual stats, it's about how we do as a team. We battled hard against the A's and came up just short. Hopefully we can get in the win column at our next game."

PLAYER OF THE WEEK
Jackson P
This week's Player of the Week award goes to.....JACKSON PAVITT! In the 2 games the Cards went 1-1, Jackson went 3-4 with 3 runs, 1 walk and 1 stolen base. As impressive as his offensive statistics for the week were, it was Pavitt's great defense that earned him P.O.W. honors. He made several plays, including covering 1st base perfectly on a bunt attempt and making an incredible diving catch in the outfield that stopped a rally by the 1st place Mariners.

Pavitt, in his 2nd season in the Majors, commented after the win on Tuesday versus the Mariners, "We had 2 really good practices on Sunday and Monday and we were able to execute offensively and keep the pressure on the Mariners, especially stealing extra bases. As for my hitting, I worked really hard in the off season with the Midnight Suns program and it's a good feeling that I'm consistently hitting the ball on the sweet part of the bat. Coach John and Coach Andy have been working with us on hitting line drives down and it just goes to show, the more you practice, the more prepared you'll be for the games."

PLAYER OF THE WEEK
Tod B

This week's Player of the Week award goes to.....TOD BASEDEN! In the 2 games the Cards went 1-1, Tod went 2-6 with 4 runs, 2 walks and 2 stolen bases. As the lead off hitter, Tod is doing all the little things to be successful in getting on base. Even more impressive than the offensive production was Tod's hard work behind home plate catching. There were several times where the pitch was short and Tod would scoop it up with ease.

Baseden, in his 1st season in the Majors, commented after the win on Saturday versus the Phillies, "I was patient at the plate today but was able to get a hit when the pitch was in the hitting zone. If I can continue to get on base, hopefully our big sticks (Trey, Jack or Kurt) can hit me in to score a run. Today we really showed just how good we can be. Hopefully we can continue this momentum going into next week against the Mariners."

This week's Player of the Week award goes to.....Jake Macaulay! In the Cards 2 wins, Jake went 3-5 with 3 RBI's and a key defensive putout to end the game in a win versus the A's on Saturday, May 12th.

Macaulay, in his 1st season in the Majors, commented after the A's win, "Well, Coach John has been working really hard with me in the offseason with my swing and I'd have to say in our first 3 games of the season, it is paying off. I know Nick (Stewart) and me are the 2 young kids on the team, but we really want to show we belong here and want to give 110% to helping the team try and get a W. I'm just happy Coach John has given me the opportunity."

Cards Start The Season 2-1
Kurt at 1st

Less than 10 days into the 20 game regular season, the Cardinals have already proven that they are improving with each game. The Cards are currently in 1st place of the East Division with a record of 1-0 and a record of 2-1 overall. After losing their 1st game against the Phillies 3-0 against a classic pitching dual between Ryan Kelly and Jack Grummett, the Cards were able to capture wins in their next 2 games, beating their division rival Angels 12-9 on May 8th and then winning again against the A's 8-6.

Against the Angels, the Cards showed a lot of heart, character and determination. Trailing 9-4 in the bottom of the 4th, the Cards were able to put together an offensive rally to take the lead and hold on for the win. Hits by Fred Collier, Dylan Johnson and Jake Macaulay proved to be key in mounting a big offensive surge. With bases loaded, Jack Grummett capped it off with a hard grounder past the shortstop that made it all the way to fence for a bases clearing triple.   After taking the lead, Kurt "Nuke" Vandor came in to pitch in the 6th and slammed the door on the Angels by capturing his first save of the season and the first win for the Cards with a final score of 12-9.

On Saturday, May 12th, the Cards again put up impressive offensive numbers by taking the lead for good in the second and never looking back by beating the A's 8-6. Trey "T Money" Williams went 2-4 with a double and 2 RBI's, Kurt Vandor went 2-4, Jake Macaulay went 1-2 with 2 RBI's and Dylan Johnson with 2-3 with 2 runs. In the bottom of the 6th, the A's were able to close the lead to 8-6 with Jackson Lehnhart hitting a bases loaded inside the park grand slam. The Cards showed their toughness and determination by not giving up and making key infield plays by Johnson and Macaulay in getting the final 2 outs and securing the win. Vandor picked up the win (1-0, 1 save) and Jack Grummett picked up his 1st save (0-1, 1 save).

After Saturday's game, Coach John commented "I'm liking the direction the team is heading right now. We still have a lot to learn and mistakes will be made along the way, but as long as the kids give us 110%, that's all we can ask. I'm especially happy with how the kids bounced back from a 5 run deficit against the Angels the other day. That showed me that they won't quit during the game. It's a long season and we still have a long ways to go, but if the kids continue to improve with each game and have fun along the way, I'll be very happy."

(Answer - A baseball team!! Congrats to Fred for getting the correct answer.)

Tuesday, May 8
PLAYER OF THE WEEK
George G
Player of the week goes to...(drum roll, please)....GEORGE GRUMMETT! Although the Cards came out on the losing end of the 1st game of the season 3-0, George showed he was tough as nails. In the top of the 5th inning he was hit by a hard pitch in the upper left arm. George got hit, sucked it up, dropped his bat and ran down to first. It takes a tough player to brush off the pain like George did. Way to suck it up GEORGE!!!

When asked after the game about getting hit, George commented, "Yeah, Ryan Kelly throws some pretty good gas, but hey, it bounced off my big guns like a fly hitting a window. I wanted to get on base and score to cut the lead down to 3-1, unfortunately things just didn't go our way today. But I've got to give credit to Ryan, today he showed why he is one of the best pitchers in our league."

Boring right? Everybody wants to hit live, right? Just remember, if players in the major leagues swear by using the T to improve their hitting, why not you? The great thing about the T is that you get a perfect strike with every swing, something you can't say about the soft toss hitting drill or even live batting practice. Just remember, it's all about focus, imagining that perfect swing and then executing. Here's Nick showing the perfect follow through and keeping his head from shoulder to shoulder...
