John Finishes Third at Main Event
The 2003-Main Event Racing Series season came to a close at Columbus Speedway on October 19th. The 2003-Main Event Classic was presented by Carter Lumber. Due to a number seven pill draw, John Doering, Jr., the seventh fastest qualifier, had pole position alongside Donnie Hill. Surprisingly, when the green waved, the outside car of Hill took advantage and closed the door on Doering in turn one. Hill, definitely fast on short runs, was able to pull away from Doering in the early going.

The car everyone was keeping their eyes on was that of Columbus ace, Robbie Dean. Usually, at the year end Columbus specials, Dean struggles to qualify well enough to start towards the front, but always puts on a whale of a show to move through the field, as he did in 2001 when he started deep in the field and finished fourth. However, this past weekend, Dean qualified in the second spot, which put him sixth on the starting grid. As the early laps progressed, Dean raced the outside lane, his usual, and moved around the top drivers, one car at a time. Finally, several laps after starting his charge, Dean bulleted to the outside of Hill and took over the race lead.

Meanwhile, weekend’s top qualifier, Tim Ice, was struggling to move by some of his fellow racers. Ice was able to get by Don Whetnall in an early pass which resulted in some contact and Whetnall spinning. Later, he and John Grega battled it out in a top five race, but Grega never opened the door for Ice to get by. Ice’s car was still fast, but didn’t seem to have the setup it needed to make passes in the outside lane as Dean’s could.

As the race wore on, Dean showed no signs of losing control of the top spot. In the final stages, a yellow came out after Doering had caught him in lapped traffic, but when the green again dropped Dean pulled away with the hard earned victory. Following the Scott’s Wrecking/Dallas Services #77 of Darbydale, Ohio’s Robbie Dean were John Doering, Jr., John Grega, Tim Ice, and Donnie Hill. Brian Campbell, Tim Felver, Tim Yonker, Mike Stacy, and Jeremie Wiggins completed the top ten.

The 2003-Main Event Racing Series season is now complete. Rich Rohrer won the championship for the third time, while Ryan Tedesco, Tim Ice, Dino Long, and Gary Whipkey completed the top five in the series’ points. For offseason updates and news, go to maineventracingseries.com.

Doctors Orders John to Take Time Off
For the first time since breaking a leg racing motorcycles years ago John has had to take time off from racing. John picked up an infection in his foot that caused it to swell three times its normal size. Under Doctors orders John was told to wait for the healing process to take place or there was a possibility of him losing his foot. John is taking it day by day and is looking forward to getting behind the wheel as soon as his doctor will give him the permission to do so.

Get Well Soon John!
