When the name John Grega is mentioned in racing circles many things come to mind. If you ask some of the top short track racing stars such as Gary St.Amant, Butch Miller, and Mike Garvey they will tell you he is one of the top chassis builders in the country. Many drivers specifically request John to build their racecars. His employment with Port City Racing for the last 24 years has helped him earn this reputation. Others would attest that he is one of the best Dirt Late Model drivers in the State of Michigan. With 16 Track championships on the clay tracks of Winston Motor Speedway and Thunderbird Raceway you can see why people associate him with his Dirt Track racing skills. Many also see John as one of the best asphalt late model drivers in the Midwest. His track Championships at Auto City Speedway in 1994 and 2008 along with his "Dixie Cup Series" championships at Dixie Motor Speedway in 2006, 2007 and 2008 reinforce these thoughts. Throw in wins from touring series like the Iceman and Main Event Series and you can understand why people recognize him for his efforts in his Asphalt Late Model racecars. John also holds the distinction of winning the largest purse ($20,000) in Michigan Late Model history when he won the Chris Bradley Memorial Race at Berlin Raceway in 2002. In 2003 John was inducted into the Michigan Motorsports Hall of Fame. His uncanny ability to be successful on Dirt as well as pavement makes him one of the most respected drivers in West Michigan.

We welcome you to take a look around in the John Grega Web Site as he tours the Midwest in the Port City "House Car" Late Model and hit shows around the state in his dirt late model

Grega 2 For 3 In Dixie Cup Series

It may have been Friday the 13th, but it was a lucky night for several drivers as round 3 of the A+ Supply Dixie Cup Series entertained a huge crowd. There was also a Celebrity Go Kart race sponsored Kokomos’s of Saginaw , benefiting the City Rescue Mission; an organization that helps rescue missions in Saginaw and Bay Counties .

Track record holder Harold Fair, Jr. set fast time for the Outlaw Supers with a 14.590. The 100-lap A+ Supply Dixie Cup Series main event saw Fruit Port , Michigan ’s John Grega muscle his way past pole sitter Jerry Artuso for the early lead. The Hall of Fame driver put some distance between himself and the field as those behind him were battling for position. The cream began to rise to the top as veteran Steve Sauve and young gun Johnny Van Doorn worked their way forward. Sauve was brutal on the competition as he picked off numerous cars on restarts. Unfortunately he brushed the frontstretch wall as he got by John Doering Jr, which may have ended his hopes of a win due to knocking the front end out of whack. Van Doorn, who had won the last Dixie Cup Series event, was out to prove it was no fluke as he worked through the field, catching Grega with 25 laps to go. The two cars fought their way around the bottom of the 4/10-mile oval with Grega nursing a leaking left front tire. Van Doorn was faster but could not make his car work on the outside, having to settle for the runner-up spot. He joked afterward that since Grega is his boss at Port City Racing, he didn't want to pass him. But Grega had his hands full with the youngster, who is one of the up-and-coming drivers in the Midwest . Grega put an exclamation point on his win by doing a NASCAR-style burnout from the flagstand to the backstretch. Artuso ran a smooth race to finish third followed by Sauve and Jay Reinbold. Rounding out the top 10 were Fair, Todd Rosebrugh, Mike Luberda, Jr., Claude Plante, Jr. and Lenny Roberts. Sauve leads Grega by a mere 4 points for the Series Championship with Fair out of second by only 1 point.

Grega Claims Dixie Cup Series Win

Dixie Motor Speedway
Friday, May 25, 2007

BIRCH RUN, Mich. -- John Grega demonstrated why there's no substitute for experience as he cruised to victory in the opening round of the A+ Supply Dixie Cup Series at Dixie Motor Speedway on Friday, May 25th. Despite not having the car as fast as he usually does, he bested a field of the best outlaw hotshoes in the Midwest.

Twenty Eight Outlaw Super Late Models timed in for the 100-lap event, with Harold Fair, Jr. setting the pace with 14.576. At last year’s “150”, Saginaw's Norm Davis had the car to beat until a flat tire ended his chances for the win. This time he “messed up” during qualifying but said the car was good as he won the 15-lap Last Chance race with Canadian Jerry Artuso in tow. Series defending Champion John Grega uncharacteristically started on the pole with Auburn’s Brent Jack along side. To the surprise of the strong Memorial Day Weekend crowd, Jack got the advantage on two straight starts and put some distance between himself and Grega but his engine quit just 3 laps in with apparent ignition woes, handing the lead over to Grega. Michigan standout Steve Sauve moved into second and applied plenty of pressure on the restarts. Meanwhile, Angola’s Scott Hantz and Fair were being held up by David McManus in the #5 Zent/Hudson machine. Hantz made a run on the outside of McMannus off of turn 4 but McManus drifted up to the wall, nearly taking out both machines, Fast-timer Fair was ready for the opportunity as he made a move by both of them to get the third spot. Back at the front, the two Hall of Fame drivers stayed in front with Grega taking the checkered flag. In the face of an overheating problem, Sauve, who had not been up to his normal form the past 2 seasons, was pleased to have a good run coming home in 2nd in a tough field. Rounding out the top 5 were Fair, Hantz and Davis who survived an early altercation to finish 5th.
