2009/2010 TRAVELING BASKETBALL PROGRAM
REGISTRATION FOR the 2009-2010 season is closed, and traveling teams have been selected for the upcoming season. Players can expect to hear from their coaches by early October, and for practices to start by the end of October. The entire practice and tournament calendar is being finalized NOW, please watch this space for information.
General Information: The IBA Traveling Basketball program is more intense and competitive and is designed to give the top players in our community an opportunity to compare their basketball skills with other communities’ top players in 8 - 11 weekend tournaments and possibly also a weekly league schedule. Players are selected through a tryout procedure.
Traveling Basketball requires significant player, parent and financial commitment. Traveling Teams practice two nights per week with as many as five tournament and/or league games per weekend. Tournaments are located throughout the metro area and may include out-of-town tournaments. Dates, times and locations of tournaments are determined by the Board and coaches. Parents need to be prepared to drive and stay for their players’ games. Practices begin in October and continue through early March. Practice times are assigned by the Scheduling Director in September in cooperation with coaching staffs.
Eligibility: Boys and girls IBA Traveling Teams are comprised of players from the Irondale High School (IHS) attendance area for each grade level 4 - 8. (3rd graders can try out for 4th grade teams.) Players must have their primary residence in the Irondale High School attendance area or be open enrolled in an Irondale feeder school. Persons who wish to play traveling basketball who do not live in the IHS area must try-out for only one team, Irondale or their high school area, NOT BOTH. No exceptions!
Registration and Fees: Players must either pre-register by mail, online, or in-person on or before September 15th, 2008 for their grade level’s Traveling Program. Players must provide a completed registration form, including all signatures, the Medical Information Form, the signed Code of Conduct form, AND the appropriate fee at the time of registration.
Online registration: go to www.irondalebasketball.org, August 17, 2009 thru September 17, 2009.
In-person registration: Pike Lake Education Ctr, 2101 NW 14th St in New Brighton, during office hours: Monday-Friday 9:00am-3:30pm, August 17-September 17, and Monday-Thursday 4:30-8:30pm, September 8-September 17.
OR
Highview Middle School during Registration Nights/Warm-ups, September 10 and 15 from 6:00-9:00pm.
The registration fee for the Traveling Program is $125 for the 2009/2010 season ($250 maximum per family). Make checks payable to Irondale Basketball Association. No refunds for players that do not make a traveling team and still play in the in-house league.*
In addition to the program registration fee, parents should expect to pay an additional $200-250 per player for yearly tournament fees. Confidential financial assistance is available for those who demonstrate financial need. Families of players should also be prepared to incur other miscellaneous expenses at tournaments (admission fees, concessions, etc.). Teams also attend an out of town tournament, which involves transportation, food and lodging expenses.
Tryouts: ATTENDANCE AT BOTH TRYOUT SESSIONS IS MANDATORY. Please refer any questions regarding attendance to the Traveling Directors. Players should arrive 15 minutes prior to their scheduled tryout session. Players interested in trying out for the traveling program will do so at their own grade level. Players may not “play up” or “play down” (with the exception of 3rd graders playing for 4th grade teams). Evaluators may request a third try-out session for a grade level to better evaluate a group. In this event, some players will receive a phone call eliminating them from the tryout process after the second session.
Gym shoes must be worn at tryouts. Only IBA Board members, the evaluators, and the players will be allowed in the gymnasium during the tryout sessions. At least three evaluators will be present at each session. Evaluators rate players on basic skills, form, court presence, teamwork and attitude. Scores from the evaluators are averaged and players are ranked by scores. The first seven players are placed on the team. The remaining team slots are determined through consensus of the evaluators and the coach of the team. If the evaluators determine that there are enough players that demonstrate quality skills, “B” level-traveling teams will be formed. The decisions of the evaluators are final. Players who are not selected for the Traveling Teams will be selected to play on In-House teams.
Irondale Great Shoot-Out Tournament: The IBA sponsors this yearly basketball tournament. This year’s dates are November 7-8, 2009 for girls and January 30-31, 2010 for boys. All traveling team parents are expected to assist at the tournament as timekeepers, scorekeepers, or in admissions and concessions. Proceeds from the tournament help offset some of our equipment and uniform expenses.
*Exception: If a 4th grade player registers for traveling, but instead plays in-house, a refund of $30 (the difference in registration cost between 4th grade in house and traveling) will be given.

Traveling Players: Take Care of Your Uniforms!
Our uniforms are a major expense to the IBA and many of them wear out pre-maturely. You can help by only wearing your uniform to tournaments and by following these wash instructions:
1. Turn uniforms inside out and wash in cold water
2. Hang to dry (do not place in dryer)
3. Never use bleach!
