Yankees and Braves Merge

The Indianapolis Yankees and the Kokomo Braves have announced their merger for the upcoming 2006 IABL season.  After three seasons in the MABL, the Yankees manager Erich Rusie and Braves manager Jason Nelson, in his team's second season, brought the clubs together in hopes of fielding a more competitive team.  The Yankees, founded under Dustin McCallister in 2003, went 4-16 in their inaugural season, then went 5-15 in 2004 and  8-9 in 2005 under Erich Rusie.  The team continually added a higher level of talent with more players with college experience suited up for the Yankees and an overall depth was obtained with capable players filling out the entire roster.  However, with the IABL leaning towards a more balanced schedule and the addition of highly competitive teams to the league, the merger allows the team to continue to move forward instead of declining in production.
Most of the Yankees core players with take part in the merger.  Aces Matt Matheis and Bobby Reese will anchor the pitching staff along with workhorse Robbie Pattengale. The Yankees starting infield will make the transition alot easier with the only known loss coming at first base as power hitting Ricky McGraw signed a professional contract with the Evansville Otters.  Second basemen Steve Gentry returns, as does Steve Owens at the hot corner.  Fernando Ramirez, picked up from the MSBL Cubs will accompany Josh Church in the middle of the infield.  The outfield will be a platoon of players from both squads fighting it out for playing time as the team will be two deep at each outfield position. Erich Rusie will step down as manager and relinsquish head coaching duties to Jason Nelson. Rusie will remain on the team as a catcher along with Dave Willis from the Kokmo club. The merger was followed by some bad news as two Braves' stars left to begin an expansion team. Hugo Pena and Matt Burke departure opens the door for other outfielders to step up and log major innings.  Overall, the merger will consolidate the two teams amassed talent under an organized program that should be more competitive.
