Indiana Baseball Club Opens 2011 Season With 2nd Place Finish @ Indiana State University
IBC rolled to 4 straight wins by a combined 34-8 score to open the Syamore Invitational @ Indiana State University before falling in the Championship game in a 1-0 pitcher's duel to the Indiana Blazers.
A strong offense, particularly in the first four games, was led by Jake Weimer (4 HR's, a double, and 13 RBI's), Logan Coughlin (2 HR's, a double, and 8 runs scored), Mitch Roberts ( HR, .444 BA), and Grant Benefiel (a double, .444 BA).
Strong pitching was also key for IBC. Jason Catron tossed a 3 hit 5-0 shutout against the Blazers in the tournament opener, Jordan Deal followed with a 10-0 shutout win over the No. KY Panthers, giving up only 2 hits, and Jake Weimer gave up only 3 hits in taking the decision in a 10-1 win over Team Drive Performance in the third win. Taylor Scott started against the Indiana Venom and Weimer returned to the hill in relief to pick up the W as IBC rallied from a 7-0 deficit through three innings with a 4 run 4th highlighted by hits from Mitch Roberts, Jeremy Jones, Patrick Hobbins, and Taylor Scott, an RBI Sac fly from Grant Benefiel, and runs scored by Logan Coughlin and Jake Weimer. The comeback was completed with another 5 runs in the last to top the Venom 9-7. The big finish started with a leadoff double by Coughlin, a 2 run dinger by Weimer, a double by Benefiel, another single by Scott, and was capped with a 3 run walkoff HR by Jordan Deal .
The title game was scoreless through 5 innings before the Blazers came up with a run scoring double in the top of the 6th inning of the well played, error free game. Jordan Deal started on the mound, scattering 6 Blazer hits in a well pitched, complete game effort. Weimer, Deal, Benefiel, and Scott had IBC's only 4 hits on the day.
