Coach Pete
Tuesday, August 9
Coach Pete Nielson announces his retirement.
Coaches

After many years of coaching at a high level, Coach Pete has announced that he is retiring from coaching softball for the Tucson Impulse franchise.

What an honor it has been for these players and parents to be associated with Coach Pete, son Scott and daughter Kelly as well as other coaches that have helped over the years (Marvin McEwen, John Jaurez, etc.).  The Tucson softball community is losing one of the original good guys and one of the elite coaches this community has had.

He leaves having put all 7 of his departing players (Sarah Gaalswijk, Chelsea Gourdin, Kayley Willingham, Amy Victoria, Anissa Lopez, Chelsea Harris and Courtney Tennyson) on college scholarship. In addition, other younger Impulse players already have scholarship offers in hand. The list of ex Impulse players that have played at the collegiate level is long and illustrious including daughters Randy (Marshall) and Kelly (Pima/Marshall). Winning tournaments was an expectation and the team won 3 ASA tournaments just last season.

Impulse Player videos located on the 'Links' page.

December - Sarah and Courtney commit to Paradise Valley CC. Chelsea G. is committed to Pima CC, Chelsea H. to Dordt College, Kayley to Ouachita Baptist College and Anissa to Paradise Valley CC.

November 21 - Successful fall season continues for Impulse in the Thanksgiving Fiesta tournament in Phoenix. The tournament started well as Impulse jumped on the Outlaws Gold team for 5 runs in the first behind rbi's from Chelsea H, Courtney, Shelby, Sarah and Kayley and that was all Sarah needed as she threw a no-hitter on the way to a 7-0 win. Game 2 also went well as Impulse scored 9 in the 3rd inning on the way to 11-1 win over the Diamond Devils behind Courtney's pitching. The big inning was highlighted by a Kayley homerun blast over the centerfield fence. Game 3 was a struggle as Impulse fell to the Suncats. Bracket day started with an exciting game against the Krazy Kats. After a early 3-0 lead, a 3 error inning allowed the Kats to tie before Impulse retook the lead 6-3. Another error in the 5th allowed the Kats to tie it once again and force extra innings. A sweet double play by Chelsea G and Amanda ended the Kats threat and then a single by Savanah with 1 out and the bases loaded in the bottom of the 6th ended the game before a torrential downpour ended the tournament prematurely. Sarah went 6 innings, giving up 5 hits and 1 earned run. No information on if/when the remainder of the tournament will be played.

November 14 - Impulse plays in the Julie Reitan with mixed success. For the first time in the fall of 2010, Impulse lost on Sunday. The tournament started with Impulse defeating Scramblers 5-4 as Amanda Miller drove in Chelsea Gourdin in the bottom of the last inning for the win to back Sarah's 3 hit pitching. The team struggled defensively in that first game but fought their way through it. In game 2, Impulse ran into a Bandits team playing their best softball of the fall and lost with a un-inspiring performance. Game 3 saw Impulse move out to a 5-2 lead but then saw Desert Thunder rally in their last at bat to force a game ending tie in a dissappointing finish for Impulse. Bracket day started with another matchup with that very good Scramblers team. A pitching duel ensued with Impulse coming out on top 3-1 when they got 2 runs in the top of the 7th inning to back Sarah's 5 hit gem where she struck out 10. Impulse struggled at the plate and only got 3 hits but they were critical hits by the Chelsea's and Hailey to get the runs home. Game 2 of bracket play saw Impulse's 14 game winning streak on Sunday come to an end as early difficulties were too much to overcome in a tough loss to the tournaments eventual champion and their Sunday record fell to 14-1.

November 18 - Impulse would like to welcome Hailey Keith to the team.

November 9 - Impulse would like to welcome Savannah Fuller to the Impulse family. Savannah officially joined the team this week.

November 1 - Impulse  goes to Las Vegas and comes home with a 4-1 showing.  Impulse had a sluggish start in a 2-0 loss to California Stealth where numerous things went wrong. As is Impulse fall 2010 tradition, the team turned it up a notch after game 1.

Game 2 saw Impulse take out California Quickturn 7-2  after falling behind 1-0. Amanda had a shot to the fence in the 4th to jump start the offense while Courtney struck out 6 and gave up only 5 hits. Shelby's single in the 5th broke the game open.

In Game 3, Impulse took on a Colorado Stars team in a well played game with Impulse prevailing 6-2. Sarah's homerun blast got the offense going in the 3rd and 4th inning singles by Anissa, Cassandra, Kelsi and both Chelsea's broke open the game. Anissa went 2-3 with a triple. On the mound, Courtney went the first 2 and then Sarah went the final 4 allowing just 2 hits for the win.

Saturday started against  a overmatched Lil Rebels team and Impulse wasted no time putting this one away in scoring 7 in the first on the way to an easy 17-1 win. Hitting was led by Chelsea G's 3-3, 3 runs scored and a walk as 8 players had hits with Chelsea H and Sarah getting 2 each. On the mound, Courtney mowed the rebels down, going 4 innings giving up only 2 hits and an earned run.

In the tournament final, Impulse got to play Team Force for the 5th time this fall and for the 4th time, Impulse won. Cassandra's 2 out 2 run double as time expired gave Impulse a 5-3 win and 2nd straight last at bit heroics victory against Force by Cassandra, who also won the last tournament with a 2 out single against this same Force team. We're thinking Force doesn't want to see Cassandra at bat late in a game again. Kelsey and Cassandra both went 2-2 to back Sarah's 1 earned run pitching performance. For the tournament, Sarah and Courtney went 23 innings and gave up just 5 earned runs. Another impressive tournament for this Impulse team. Way to go ladies!!

October 17, 2010 - Impulse does it again as they win the 2010 ASA Cactus Slapper 18u tournament for their 3rd tournament title of the fall season. What an impressive performance overall. After an opening loss where mistakes ruled the day, Impulse got on a roll. Led by Courtney's pitching, Impulse stopped the veteran Scramblers team 5-3 and then dismantled the Roadrunners 14-1 in pounding out 18 hits to support Sarah's pitching. Bracket day started with Impulse matched up with Tucson Shockwave. After falling behind 5-4, Impulse rallied for a 8-6 win. Leading the way for Impulse was Chelsea G's 3-4 with a walk and 3 runs scored and key rbi's by Amanda and Courtney. Shelby went 2-3 to help back Courtney's pitching.

Game 2 saw Impulse taking on Desert Thunder. In a well played game, Impulse pulled out a 4-3 win on a 2 out rbi by Chelsea in the 5th inning that gave Impulse the lead for good. Chelsea and Amanda both went 2-3 with Amanda having 2 rbi's to back Sarah's 5 hit, 1 earned run performance.

In the title game, Impulse rallied from 2 down with 2 out and no one on in the bottom of the 7th to defeat Team Force 6-5. After getting a botched call that allowed Force to take the lead with 2 unearned runs in the top of the 7th, Courtney, Kayley, Sarah and Cassandra all had great at bats in creating the rally with Sarah's hit generating a panic'd throwing error that scored 2 and Cassandra's hit then ending the game and getting another championship for Impulse. On the hill, Sarah went 7 innings allowing 5 hits and 3 earned runs and for the tournament went 23 innings giving up just 2 earned runs. Courtney went 3-4 and Kelsey and Chelsea G had great catches in the outfield to help lift Impulse to the exciting win.  Impulse is now 11-0 on Sundays this season. These players showed heart, drive, teamwork, camaraderie and effort. Wow.

October 10, 2010 -  Impulse travels to Phoenix for the Future Stars tournament and gets 3 wins. The tournament started well for Impulse as they edged past the New Mexico Renegades 1-0 behind Sarah's 3 hit shutout and 8 strikeouts.  2 tough losses followed that win as Impulse was edged by the Hotshots and Desert Ice. Sunday changed things back to winning ways as Impulse defeated the New Mexico Sol behind a 2 run single from Chelsea H and 2 ground out RBI's for Amanda as well as single RBI's from Shelby and Courtney to back Sarah's pitching. In the tournament final, Impulse exploded for 15 hits in routing the Desert Cobras 11-1 as every player in the line-up had a RBI with Shelby and Kayley getting 2 each to back Courtney's pitching. Good job ladies.

September 26, 2010 - Congratulation again to Tucson Impulse for winning their 2nd tournament of the fall when they won the Fiesta De Tucson 18U softball tournament today. Awesome job all around once again. Courtney had her best pitching day in a year. Amanda and Kayley went yard (Amanda twice) and the hitting was outstanding as a whole, Sarah gave up only a lone earned run in the title game in a stellar outing, great defense by Chelsie H at 3rd and both the infield and outfield were all over the park defensively making plays when we needed it. Slappers Kelsey and Chelsie G set the table all weekend at the top of the order. There was great hustle by all.

The day started very slowly as Impulse fell behind a huge 7-0 in their first game after 2 innings but surged back for a 10-7 win over the Bandits behind stellar hitting including Kayley's blast and Courtney's s solid relief work. They followed that with a 6-3 win over Team Force behind Courtney's 6 hitter and a Amanda bomb before dispatching an outstanding Elite team in the final to get that 2nd Championship behind Sarah's 3 hit complete game and doubles from Chelsea H (2) and Cassandra and a dynamic defense. !!!!!!!  Great job ladies

September 12, 2010 - Congratulations to Impulse for sweeping through bracket play in the 2010 Belan Camacho softball tournament to claim the 18u Championship.

Impulse beat Tucson Mountain Heat, Impulse-93 and Elite to claim the championship.

The days started with a 14-2 pounding of Tucson Mountain Heat behind a slew of hitting stars. Courtney drove in 4 runs while Anissa had 3 rbi to lead the way. Chelsea H was 3-4 and Courtney, Cassandra and Anissa went 2-3.

In the 2nd game, Impulse needed to go 9 emotional innings but pulled out the win behind key hits from Courtney, Cassandra, Kelsi, Hannah and Shelby. On the mound, Sarah went all 9 innings, giving up zero earned runs and allowing only 6 hits in a dominating effort.

In the title game Chelsea H had 10 putouts at 3rd base and finished a dominating defensive weekend at 3rd base. Shelby and Sarah each had 2 run singles in the 3rd to break the game open and Kelsi, Amanda and Shelby had doubles in the 5th to put the game awy. Courtney allowed 6 hits and 3 runs in 6 innings on the mound as Impulse defeated Elite 7-3 to take home the championship.

Awesome job ladies!!!. You showed everything this weekend, great pitching, great hitting and outstanding defense.
