2009 Western Divisionals
Western Divisional May 13-15th 2009 Richland, Washington Our State team showed up to defend their impressive win from the year previous. This was going to be no easy task. The competition from the division is fierce as is the desire to win !!! Day one brought some trouble with some lost weight due to late arrivals. After locking down to another section of the river making it back in time was interrupted by a barge, which on the Columbia River, has the absolute right of way. Day two brought about an even bigger challenge. Competition was cancelled and would not be made up. At this point it was now all about the top weight for Idaho. Anglers focus shifted slightly to try for the 1 spot our team would get at the IBFN Championship in Florida. At the end of it all Wade Denny and Owen Lounsbury TIED with 22.01 lbs!!! what a dramatic moment. We all sat anxiously waiting to hear the tie breaker results. Owen had caught more fish over the two day event which gave him the win. I can only imagine the rush that went through his mind as he heard the announcement. Concradulations to Owen for an impressive win. Owen Lounsbury State Champion Sam Chavez & Dillion Edes Jr. State ChampionsWestern Youth DivisionalMay 15th 2009Richland, Washington This year brought a new format to the Junior Bassmasters program. As with anything in life we see updates, modifications, and changes continually. In an effort to more closely align the Junior Tournament Trail with the Adult Trail, the Junior Divisional has become integrated with the Western Divisional as one tournament. I will explain. This year the Western Divisional started on the 13th of May and finished up on the 15th providing advancement for the champion as normal. The big change for this is that the Junior Divisional is actually held in conjunction with the Adult tournament on the last day. The Juniors were required to weigh their fish separately, however the weigh became a part of the State Team’s total weight for the divisional. WOW, talk about a lot of pressure on some young anglers. They could make or break the State team. It was quite an event. Sam Chavez and Dillion Edes showed up Wednesday ready to go. The plan included a pre-fish on Thursday to find a few great fishin holes in this new water. Mother Nature did not agree to this plan. With winds up to 40 MPH, the tournament director cancelled all fishing for Thursday. It was a let down to say the least. Going out Friday we had one place that Dillion had pre-fished the week before. He said they had good fish so off we went. The fishing was very slow, but for hours Dillion and Sam beat the shoreline waiting for those fish to come up. With just 1 fish in the boat they finally decided to move on. We bounced around hitting whatever spot we could find that looked good, but to no avail. It was a long hard day of fishing and I can say that these two young anglers put in more effort than a lot of adults would have. Great Job Dillion and Sam !!!
