Amy Atteberry Story: Post Dispatch Apr 4,2002
By Leslie Knueppel
Post-Tribune correspondent
WHITING —Number 5, Amy Atteberry, steps up to the plate, taps it with her
left foot, and squats down.
This is the usual game ritual of the senior Whiting Oiler, who is arguably
one of the most underrated catchers in Northwest Indiana.
Last year, Atteberry put together a great offensive season —hitting .389
with nine triples.
It added up to first team All-Lake Conference selection.
“She is one of the quickest catchers I have ever coached,” Whiting Coach Paul
Laub said.
“Not only can she run, Amy has a strong inside/outside swing which allows her
to hit the ball hard into right field.”
Atteberry has played softball since age 5. A dedicated player, she spends the
summer playing for the AAUIndiana Slammers, the latest of list of traveling
teams she has played for.
Laub credits the almost year-round play with helping her improve her game.
“Amy is willing to sacrifice,” Laub said. “Even in 85-degree temperatures,
Amy will strap on her catching gear and get out there and play.”
He also thinks facing some formidable opposition in the offseason has made
her even more formidable to the teams on Class 1A Whiting’s schedule.
“Because she plays outside of the community, she can go face the best
competition.”
Laub said that experience helps her handle difficult situations.
Atteberry doesn’t have any problem playing for a smaller school.
“You do hear more about bigger schools, but I’m still getting to play, so I’m
happy.”
Teammates think of Atteberry as a motivator, Laub said, another benefit of
playing as many games as she does.
And the closer the game, the more vocal she becomes, coaxing and coaching her
teammates.
“I really like it,” she said of being able to lead in clutch spots.
“There’s really no pressure ever. Even in intense situations, it’s still
fun.”
