| To: Inglewood Jr. All-American Football League Staff & Parents
Many of you are quite concerned about our field situation for this 2008 season. I regretfully inform you that all of our games will be played on the road. For the past 38 years, we have had usage of Coleman Stadium (Sentinel Field) and recently Morningside High School.
The field cost has increased drastically in the past 10 years. From 1999 to 2007 we went from $12,000.00 to $22,000.00, and these were discounted fees. We submitted our application to the Inglewood Unified School District this year in March. No response was given from the District until July, informing us that they would not be discounting the field this year due to their budget cuts. I tried to get an audience with Superintendent Powell but was told she was on vacation and not available to lower the field cost of $47,000.00 -- $33,000.00 for Coleman and $14,000.00 for Morningside. We then began looking for other locations to play. Several of my Board Members and Coaches jumped on this endeavor knowing that our deadline was fast approaching. Hawthorne’s Head Football Coach and Principal embraced our efforts to use their facility. However, their school district was not able to provide us with a permit until one week after the deadline for OCJAAF to get regular season games. We were fortunate to obtain play-off games on week 9 and 10.
Please join me in thanking Coach Thad Ballew, Lesli Tate, Coach Ronnie Aubert, Coach Rick Harris and William Roebuck for all of their efforts to resolve this problem. The final draft of the season’s schedule has not been posted, and once that happens, the Executive Board will revisit our budget to see what we can do to help off-set (if possible) the travel cost to the games the furthest away, example HB and beyond. We do need everyone to assist in this endeavor by carpooling to close locations. The cost for the usage of the Fields was approximately $22,000.00. In years past the cost ran about $10,000.00. The increase of the fields weren’t in the 2007 budget for $22,000.00. The increase set the league back approximately $12,000.00.
We enter this season 2008 in the RED with a cost of approx. $12,000.00.
To combat this increase this year we have had the Firework stand fund-raiser, and we will be hosting the play-off games during the post season of weeks 9 and 10, as well as the Super Bowl. Other fund-raisers scheduled for this season are: Get Acquainted Dance (September 20) and Monday Night Football at Chili’s (September 15 and October 27).
With the above events all being a success for 2008-2009 season, we will financially end the season in the BLACK or GREEN as one may say.
I am sorry for any inconvenience and hardship this may cause anyone. I give my word that next year will be different. Applications have already been submitted to ensure a home field for our 40th year anniversary.
Sincerely,
Linda Gibson
President
