VIVA LAS VEGAS!!!!
VIVA LAS VEGAS - HAWKS HAVE GREAT TRIP !!!

The Hawks 14 under players, with a couple 12's playing up to help us, had a terrific showing out West in their first venture outside since last October! The St Paddy's Day Tourney featured 24 teams - many with top finishes at ASA Nationals last year - amounting to 23 teams from California, Arizona and Nevada, plus our lone Midwest entry Hawks! Having played during the winter in domes, the Hawks were anxious to get out in the dirt and kick up some dust. They certainly came ready to play!

Game 1 saw the Hawks battle the California Nemesis and featured a walk-off single by Josie to drive in Stacie to win the game in their final at bat. Jori and Chelsea shared mound duties and the lefty righty combo scattered 3 hits along the way. The Hawks opened with Jess, Erin and Stacie reaching to open the first, then using their trick running game to tally 3 runs. The Nemesis battled back with 1 run in the 1st, 2nd and 3rd before the exciting winning hit from Josie to end the contest.

Game 2 was a battle with eventual tourney runner-up Arizona Desert Thunder, who had posted some impressive tourney tallies over the winter season. The Thunder scored first, then the HAWKS countered with 2 runs in the 3rd to take the lead into the last frame. Tess lead off with a walk, Maeve moved her to 2nd, Jess reached with a walk to set the stage for Erin's clutch hit to score 2. Chelsea and Jori again were masterful on the mound, until the Thunder scored 2 in the bottom of the 5th as time elapsed.

Game 3 in the pool round saw the HAWKS bats come alive to jump out to a 5-3 lead after 3 innings - then saw a terrific last inning walk-off squeeze bunt win the game 8-7. The Las Vegas Rage never gave up, but the Hawk win it at the end intensity pulled through another win - giving the Hawks a 2-1 record on the day and 2nd place in the tough pool. The first inning proved to ignite the Hawks once again as Jess, Erin, Stacie, Josie and Chelsea all reached scoring 2 runs. WIth no outs and the bases loaded, Jori hit a line shot to short who was in perfect position to tag the runner off 2nd and whirl and throw a strike to 3rd for the triple play! Not to lie down, the Hawk bat attack returned in the 3rd with 3 more runs as Mauve lead off with a walk, Jess singled, Erin reached on a fielders choice and Stacie followed with an RBI single. After the 2nd , Chelsea boomed a long double to plate 2 more runs. After a couple defensive lapses allowed the Rage to take a 7-6 lead into the bottom of the 5th and last inning, the HAWKS struck back to take the win. Mauve reached on a single, Jess followed with a fielders choice leaving both runners safe, Stacie plated Mauve for the tie, then Josie laid down an 0-1 count squeeze to win the tilt. Nice pitching by Chelsea, Vic and Jori in a team effort!

HAWKS QUAIN TAKE 12 UNDER TOURNEY IN MCCOOK!!!!
Great job by coach Kelly and his team as the Hawk 12's played 3 tough opponents and took home the crown in a strong 8 team field. The day started out with a complete effort on all counts and a defeat of the Oak Park WIndmills younger Red team. This set up a match with the WIndmills Gold 12's - with the Hawks getting great pitching, timely hiting and strong defense to move into the championship game.   The Hawks faced the Chitown Express, who had defeated the Hawk 11's in the semis - after consistently scoring each inning to build a 6-1 lead, the Hawks held on for their life with a 6-5 win as Chitown came within a few feet of the tieing run as a great defensive play on a runner at second beat the runner approaching home. Nice work for the Hawk 12's first play of the spring ... nice job from all 8 teams in the tourney!

HAWK 14'S FINISH 4TH IN HALL OF FAME BID QUALIFIER
A great field of teams competed Feb 23-25 in the massive McCook Center - with our young Hawks performing brilliantly and taking 4th place. After being shut out by the Oak Park WIndmills - who they had beaten in their last 2 outing this winter, the Hawks ran into a tough pitcher who shut them out 3-0. This set up a long Saturday - starting with reknowned and tourney favorite Aurelios in the 9 am opener. What a game as the Hawks jumped out 2-0, then trailed 3-2 heading into the top of the last inning - where the Hawks with 1 out were the recipient of a 2 run homer and a major upset of the talented Aurelios team. Next up was the Sparks Black - who battled back and orth before the Hawks pulled out a 3-2 sqeeker. Geting time just nough for a quick lunch, the Hawks faced the Chitown Express Silver team and once again came from behind to earn a very wll played 3-2 victory. This sent the Hawks into the dinal 4 - where Aurelios waited with vengeance and knocked off the proud Hawks 10-0 to end their ride. I am very proud of the effort our girls played this weekend - next up is the Bridgeview Dome and then our McCook invitationals in March. Waiting for us later in the month is the highly competitive ASA tourney in Las Vegas - best of luck girls!

Congrats to the CHAMPION Oak Park Windmills - we have had several great battles this winter and we look forward to more encounters as the season picks up agian for you in June.

HAWK 14'S WIN MCCOOK 18 UNDER LEAGUE CHAMPIONSHIP
In an exciting CHAMPIONSHIP GAME - the combined 14 under Hawk teams defeated the Northstars - who had been undefeated - 4-3 to claim the crown. The Hawks opened with 4 runs in the first and had the Northstars respond with 3 in their half of the first - the game then went scoreless with clutch pitching and solid defense making up for a weak defensive effort in the bottom of the first. Thanks to Jim Mecha and his staff for hosting us these past 3 months.

HAWK 16'S go undefeated in the Eastern Michigan 18 under exposure event FEB 18TH! Great job impressing the colleges in attendance against sever high quality 18 under teams. The Hawks continue to showcase their athletes and the rewards and hard earned scholarships for our players continue to pile up. Work results in rewards and these girls are one of 11 Hawk teams showcasing their talents and determination to be the best they can be!

MORE HAWKS FLYING OFF TO COLLEGE IN 2007!!!
http://www.spysoftball.com/november_9_update2.htm

Former Hawk player and now Homer Hawk coach Hannah Carter will be signing next week with Robert Morris College and coaches Smith, Coach "K" and our very own Dave Snooks. Hannah is not only a terrific ball player - but she is an unbelievable coach and roll model for our 10 under team and I am very, very proud to have her in the HOMER HAWK program. She is what exemplifies a complete student athlete and our younger athletes are very lucky to have her with us!

BETCHER/TOPEL SQUAD---

More great news --- Congrats to Mari Topel for accepting an offer to continue her education and play softball for the University of Rochester!   This is a great academic opportunity for a terrific new member to the Hawk family this season!

Great news --- Jess Walsh just signed minutes ago with Robert Morris College!!!!!   Jess is another long time Hawk, coaches for me with the 12 under team, and has worked so hard to get this far! I couldn't be prouder, we had a little rocky road on the recruiting trail - but everything works out for the best in the long run! When they made this kid, they broke the mold, and I am glad we have had the opportunity to watch Jess grow and develop as a part of our program over the years.

Brittany Wilson has verballed to UIC and coaches Tom Gray and Sarah Fisher O'Malley --- this has been Brit's dream school for some time and her one and only choice on her list. She stuck to her guns while other schools came calling and got her dream! The Wilson's are ecstatic and I hear Brit has been on cloud nine since their meeting this week!

Nicole Costello has verballed this week with St Joseph College in Rensselaer and coach Frank Wilkins. This has been a match made for almost 2 years now - and St Joe fits Nicole's needs and goals like a glove -- Frank is thrilled to have Nicole join and the Costello's are very proud of this choice among many. This reunites Jess Lynch and Nicole once again! Nicole palyed with the Hawks from 11 under thru last year and is now completing her final year at 18 with our long-time friend and class act Jim Abbott for her final season.

Congratulations to both long time Hawks and for everyone else - let me know as you make your final choices here -- to think of so many of you as 7 and 8 year olds and now we are seeing one after another move on to college - this ole guys awfully proud of each of you.

Just heard the great news that Sarah Porzel will be attending St Ambrose University and become a Queen Bee!!! Sarah is another of my original Yankees, starting with us way back at 7 years old! Wow - 10 years with me and she is still sane! Sarah, congrats on all the work and dedication paying off in this opportunity, it has been a wonderful time and I am very proud to see you are moving on to the next level now!

Another signing for our young ladies as I am proud to announce that Steph Trapp accepted Lewis University's offer and has signed to play next year for George DiMatteo. The Trapp family was a part of the Hawk family for many years with their older daughter, and it is with great pride that we have Stephanie finishing her career as a Hawk this season with us. Russ and Colleen were great contributors and class people in helping make the Hawks what we are today. Remembering facing Steph and her mom as Bobcats in all those rec tourneys at 9 and 10 to seeing the day come when another of those "little squirts" moves on to college really makes me feel old! Congrats Steph!

Yet another signing this week as Kim Malacina has signed her letter of intent to play for coach Dick Smith at St Francis! Kim is another of my original Yankees from 7 years old and it makes me so proud to see another life long Hawk moving on to college! Kim has taken the mound for us in so many key battles over the years and has always made me feel we had the upper hand no matter our opponent. If you want to see a picture of dedication and work ethic in the softball dictionary - just look for Kim's yearbook photo. From the day she decided she wanted to be a pitcher at 11 years old - I don't think there were many days where her and Dan have not worked towards this achievement as a team - congrats once again!

I just heard from Bob Topel that Brittany Hannigan has given an oral commitment to attend and play softball for Saint Xavier. Congratulations to Brittany and to the
Hannigans for this well-deserved outcome. Brit is new to the Hawks this year - but from the short time I have known her, what a determined athlete and student! Great job and CONGRATS!!!

Congratulations to Homer Hawk Sara Silke on her opportunity to continue both her softball career and her love of music by agreeing to attend Southwest Minnesota State University! Another student athlete living her dream and making the Hawks proud.

FRANZEN SQUAD----

Another Hawk excelling in the classroom and on the field as Hannah Lighty proudly announced tonight she has been accepted into the University of Chicago! What an academic honor for such a wonderful student athlete and hard worker!

Another Hawk selects her college !!! Hallie Gibbs also verballed to Syracuse and head coach Leigh Ross!!! Hallie will be entering her 4th year with the Hawks and is quite the 3 sport athlete in High School.

Also wanted to congratulate Megan Paradzinski from Ali's team as well on her selection to join Myra Minushkin at St. Xavier University. Megan is a terrific outfielder new to Ali's team this year and another quality student athlete!

FESTIN SQUAD ---

Just heard we have 2 more Hawks flying off to college next year to both continue their education and play softball for their schools! Congrats to both girls from Jeff Festin's 18 under team! Sam Griffith will be playing at Purdue North Central. She signed last weekend. Brandi Edwards will be playing at Clarke College. Great jobs girls for finding the right opportunities and for being proud members of the Homer Hawk family! The great news continues to poor in as I see many college and high school highlights filtering across my screen everyday - let's keep it up and get ready to roll this summer!

I would like to congratulate Lauren Panek on her decision to attend Saint Francis University and play for my good friend and great coach Dick Smith! Lauren is new to the Hawks this year with Jeff Festin's team - but I have known her and her family for many years back to our 11 under years playing vs her in several tourneys. Lauren is a quality shortstop and student athlete from Lemont HS.

More good news as Ali just informed me that Sarah Ottoman also verballed with University of the Ozarks in Arkansas last night.  I
don't know many details but she is super excited. Sarah started out with the Hawks many seasons ago, left for a couple seasons, and rejoins us now with Jeff Festin's squad! Great family and powerful, dedicated player - Sarah - congrats on all the hard work paying off! Another quality student athlete succeeds!

Another new Hawk is proud to announce she will be attending Robert Morris College! Congratulations to Claire Seaver!!!

BETCHER / AHERN ---
Another signing last night as CJ Rupsis signed with St Francis University. That's our 3rd player joining the Dick Smith Experience this year. CJ came to us 2 years ago and has been a leader since day one! Great job CJ and coach Smith is ecstatic to have you joining him. CJ's experience in recruiting turned sour in August with a misunderstanding with a college; but her class and determination created an opportunity for an even better opportunity! It goes to show if you deserve good things to happen to you; they will if you are patient and maintain the class that makes you the person you are! Congrats CJ!

ASA TOP 50 WATCH LIST
Amateur Softball Association announces Top 50 Watch List for the 6th Annual USA Softball National Collegiate Player of the Year Award

Oklahoma City---The Amateur Softball Association, the National Governing Body of Softball in the United States, has selected its initial “Watch List” for the 6th Annual USA Softball National Collegiate Player of the Year Award. This award, which is considered one of the most prestigious honors in women’s collegiate softball, is designed to recognize outstanding athletic achievement by female collegiate softball players across the country. Past winners of this award include UCLA’s Stacey Nuveman, Florida State’s Jessica Van der Linden and three-time winner, Texas pitcher Cat Osterman.

The 2007 Pre-Season Watch List is comprised of 50 players representing 33 schools and 11 different NCAA Division I Conferences. A complete list of the players with photos and links to their collegiate bios can be found in the College Corner on the USA Softball website (www.usasoftball.com).

The ASA will announce the 25 finalists on April 4. A player does not have to appear on the initial watch list to be considered as a Top 25 finalist, but once the Top 25 is named the remaining finalist must be selected from that list.

Just days before the start of post-season play, a list of 10 finalists will be named and released on May 9. The final three finalists will be announced May 23 while the winner of the 2006 USA Softball National Collegiate Player of the Year Award will be announced prior to the start of the 2007 NCAA Women’s College World Series in Oklahoma City.

The 2007 ESPN.com/USA Softball Collegiate Top 25 Pre-Season Poll will be announced on Tuesday, January 30.

I know it's early, but by the time we get your info back, brochures out to you, the holidays come and go, February will be on top of us before we know it. Hope to see you there.

HAWKS COLLEGE RECRUITING NIGHT!
For a couple years now I have wanted to present this type of program for our Hawk families - a night that the parents and older girls can spend with college coaches learning about the recruiting process and getting their questions answered!

The night has come -- please let all you parents know about WEDNESDAY NOVEMBER 15th --- a NIGHT WITH 2 COLLEGE HEAD COACHES who know the recruiting process and will share their thoughts, information, facts and answer your questions.

WEDNESDAY NIGHT - NOVEMBER 15TH
HOMER JR HIGH CAFETERIA
7 PM - DICK SMITH - UNIVERSITY OF ST FRANCIS
8 PM - TOM GRAY - UNIVERSITY OF ILLINOIS - CHICAGO (UIC)

This event is tailored to our 14 thru 18 under teams and players - but is also open to any Hawk parents on our younger levels as well. We will hold future events as well - but for those of you on the 14 thru 18 under teams - this is a great chance to understand the process and begin to prepare if you have not already.

It is completely free - would be great to have 1 parent from each family and our high school players - these 2 men are superb speakers and their knowledge and thoughts is well worth it for any players thinking of playing in college.

HAWK MANAGERS - PLEASE PASS ALONG TO YOUR PARENTS

HAWK 18'S OFF TO SCHOOL FOR4M THE 2006 CLASS
The Homer Hawks Organization is both pleased and proud to recognize the graduated Seniors who are now competing on a collegiate level. The primary goal of our organization is to provide a platform of exposure that focuses on all aspects of our players abilities.

Ali Franzen’s 18U team is 7 for 7.   This is testimony to the level of respect accorded Ali, and the Homer Hawks, on a local, as well as a National level.   At the beginning of the season 4 players had signed Letters of Intent;

1.        Amy Solava, Loyola University (Lincoln Way Central H.S.)
2.        Angie Funston, Loyola University (Lake Central H.S. IN)
3.        Chaleen Rumpf, Southern Illinois University, Edwardsville (Lincoln Way Central)
4.        Brittany Snorek, Augustana College (Sandberg H.S.)

Upon competing at the Nationally prestigious NFCA “Fireworks” College Exposure Tournament, in Aurora, Colorado, 2 players were signed;

1.        Jocelyn Gray, Bowling Green University (Lincoln Way East H.S.)
2.        Julie DePolo, Western Illinois University, (Lincoln Way Central H.S.)

The team then competed at the ASA 18U Championships in Owensboro, KY, having qualified by winning the 2005 ASA Northern Nationals, and finished an impressive 9th out of 144 teams. A walk-on invitation was given to;

1.        Heidi Daumen, University of Iowa, (Waubonsie Valley H.S.)

All 7 athletes now proudly wear the colors of their college teams, but will always have purple and black in their hearts.

Coach Franzen brings a unique perspective to our program. She has successfully competed, as a pitcher, on both a collegiate level as well as several seasons as a Professional. She has a “waiting list” business of pitching instruction and has trained the top pitchers in the area. Her coaching experience includes several years as a head coach on a collegiate level and is the current pitching coach on the Lincoln Way Central team. She appreciates and understands all the factors involved in being a successful Female athlete and creates an environment where all her players can excel.

Ali, along with her Husband Chris, and their two children, look forward to an even more successful 2007.

HAWKS ROLL AT ASA METROS!!!
GREAT DAY FOR THE HAWKS ONE=CE AGAIN AT METROS - WITH THE 10's finishing a storng 5th after knocking off Sparks and Naperville Diamonds on Saturday!

The 12's rolled to 3rd place playing 5 games SUnday to reach the final 3 beore being handled by a fresh and talented Wasco Diamonds. The HAWKS had to to defeat in order Sunday - after a midnight finish Saturday, the Chitown Black, Lady Tigers, Frankfort Flames and then Stone City Goldfish in consecutive games. Wasco and Orland A were palying the championship game.

The 14's Narotsky took 9th in Rockford ...Eliot repoarted the following - We placed 9th at Metro's finishing ahead of a lot of good teams. IL Powerhouse (who beat us in Michigan) and Chi-Town Black (sent home by the Windmills) left before us, as did the Crete Quest. Two teams who we have beated before, the IL Chill and the Naperville Diamonds, finished ahead of us. There are a lot of competative teams.

We beat Oak Lawn Ice White 3-0 and Prairie Hurricanes 15-8 in Pool play. Our first seed had a bye to the round of 16 where we beat Oak Park Windmills 6-5 by scoring 4 in the bottom of the 7th. Lost to Aurelios 9-1 in 6 innings after being up 1-0 for a while. Lost to IL Chill 3-2 in the losers bracket. We have beaten them twice - this was their day.

GREAT JOB HAWKS -- THE 16 AND 18's take over next weekend in Alsip and Lemont respectively!

HOMER HAWKS 12 U WIN ASA NATIONAL BID
Great victory in international of the if game that ended in the wee hours last night produced a championship for out 12's and a trip to the ASA NATIONALS! In a battle of many talented teams - the HAWKS found themselves on Sunday having to beat the Orland Sparks (3-2 and 5-1) twice and then the Wasco Diamonds in 2 straight after Wasco had knocked off the HAWKS IN THE undefeated game earlier. The Hawks were shut out by Wasco 4-0, then battled back to the finals where they posted a 9-2 victory to force the decisive game. The championship was all it was billed = as the teams battled 0-0 for 5 1/2 innings, till Wasco scratched across 1 in the bottom of the 6th. The never say die Hawks responded on a bang bang play in the 7th at home to tie the game - then exploded for 5 runs in the 8th to take home the title.

Kudos and respect go out to both our opponents - we spent the weekend not only playing but stayin with Wasco at our hotel - what a class organization -- John and his team are first class all the way !!! See you at Metros I am sure!

CONGRATS
Providence's Modelski earns high praise
Thursday, April 27, 2006
By Jason Paha, The Star
Providence Catholic senior Lauren Modelski likes to consider herself a fairly cool customer.
Her self-assured persona will be put to the test this June however, when she is forced to give a speech in front of her classmates.
Such is the price she must pay for being an accomplished academic.
Modelski, you see, was recently named the Providence Class of 2006 Salutatorian, the award given out to the student ranked second in their class, and as a result, she must offer a five-minute (or so) oration at her class graduation.
"I'm happy that I'm the Salutatorian, but I'm a little nervous about the speech," Modelski said. "I'm not thrilled about public speaking."
Not many are.
However, if Modelski puts her mind to it, she will undoubtedly enjoy a substantial amount of success with that speech. After all, everything else she applies herself to seems to come up aces.
Take for instance, her studies.
Aside from the fact that she's ranked second in her class (thanks to a robust 4.622 grade point average on a 4.0 scale), Modelski also scored a 30 on her ACT.
Add to the fact that she has, at different times during her stay at Providence, been a member of the National Honor Society, been an AP Scholar and an Illinois State Scholar, been on the first honor roll all eight semesters at Providence, earned a Providence Entrance Exam Scholarship as a freshman, and was a peer tutor, and one can't help but realize how impressive her resume is.
And that doesn't even include the fact that she's been a four-year varsity softball starter (she plays center field) for the Celtics.
"It's hard (to balance such a loaded schedule), but you just have to get your priorities straight," Modelski said. "I don't have much time but I'm not too stressed. Softball really helps take my mind off my problems. It lets me use my energy through something else."
Modelski has been playing softball for as long as she can remember (her family is very diamond-oriented, what with her older and younger brothers being involved with baseball), and she doesn't take a break during summer, thanks to her involvement with the Homer Hawks travel softball team.
"Softball eats up a lot of my time, but I love it," Modelski said.
Another thing she loves is her time spent in high school. With that said though, Modelski is primed for the next phase of her life, as a student at the University of Illinois at Champaign, Urbana.
"I am so ready to leave high school," Modelski said. "I'm really looking forward to college. I'm looking forward to meeting new people and having new experiences."

10 UNDER TIE FOR 3RD IN SPARKS ASA NATIONAL QUALIFIER - 11'2 and 13's DO WELL ALSO!
The 10 under Hawks had a very solid weekend after going 1-2 in pool play - they came out to win an exciting 1 run contest over the Lightning to get them into the semis - then falling to a very very solid 10 undr Naperville Diamonds team.

The 11's came out of a tough pool on Saturday with a 4th seed - but proved the game is played on the field as they battled back from a 5-0 first inning deficit to upset the #1 seeded SParks in opening tourney play Sunday- with a booming bases loaded sac fly with the bases loaded in the bottom of the 6th to grab the victory. The 11's were then sent home in a loss to the Chitown Express Black team.

The 13's were undeafeted in winning their pool but then came out Sunday and lost in the 2nd round in a close battle. Good showing on the weekend!
