  Welcome

Welcome to the Holy Cross High School Indoor Track website. Holy Cross is located in Delran, New Jersey and the indoor track team competes in meets sanctioned by the South Jersey Track Coaches Association (usually at Haverford College), the NJSIAA (at Princeton University), the New Jersey Catholic Track Conference (usually at Fairleigh Dickinson University, the 168th Street Armory in NYC,  the US Military Academy at West Point, NY, and/or the Jersey City Armory) and the Jersey City Department of Recreation (at Jersey City Armory). This website is maintained by the Lancer Track Club, a parents' booster organization founded to promote and support the track & field programs at Holy Cross. We also maintain a separate Outdoor Track & Field website . Our site is always under construction so if you have any suggestions, please email us. We hope you enjoy your visit!

GENERAL INFO FOR 2006 SEASON

COACHES
- This year we are pleased to have three coaches:
Jim Younglove - Head Coach (distance)
Ed Battaglia - Assistant Coach (sprints)
Bob Marsh - Assistant Coach (jumps, sprints and distance)

WARM UPS & UNIFORMS - The embroidered warmups ordered at the Parents Meeting in December are ready - most were handed out at the Pizza Party on Jan. 6.

The school provides uniforms for everyone.  Everyone gets new shorts this year.  For those who also want NEW tops (not the older school issued ones),  the Club has them for sale.  We have new singlets for boys and girls ($23) or lycra tops for girls ($34). .

T-SHIRTS - The new team T-shirts almost sold out at the Dec. 6 meeting.  There are a few still available in Cross' Corner (store bookstore).

RUNNING SHOES - Most serious runners have two or three sets of shoes for indoor track:

1) Training shoes - relatively heavy, well cushioned shoes used for everyday practice.  Can be purchased at local sporting good stores such as Dicks, Sports Authority, Modells, etc.  But beware, they are not all designed the same. Runners fall into three categories depending upon how their feet contact the ground:
"over-pronators" should have motion contol training shoes,
"neutral pronators" should have stability training shoes, and
"under-pronators" should have highly cushioned training shoes.
See this running shoe terminology page for a good explanation. Although some might, not all (general) sporting goods store salespeople know about that.  If not, you can always go to a speciality store (see below).  TIP - take an old pair of running shoes with you to the speciality store.  They will look at the wear pattern on the soles of the old shoes and help you choose the right new ones.

2) Racing flats - lightweight shoes with rubber soles used for competition.  Can be purchased at speciality running stores such as Haddonfield Running Company (in Haddonfield) or Fleet Feet (in Marlton).

3) Spikes - lightweight shoes with metal spikes on soles used for competition - to be used ONLY at the 168th Street Armory and the Jersey City Armory (NOT at Haverford and NOT at Princeton). Although there are "sprint spikes" and "distance spikes," many distance runners use racing flats rather than spikes since there is so little, if any, cushioning in spikes.  The metal spikes on the bottoms are usually either "pyramids" (fatter spike) or "needles" (skinny pin-shape). Most indoor venues that allow spikes prefer pyramids, since pins tend to cause more damage to the track.  A more or less standard size spike for indoor is 1/4" pyramids.  Spike running shoes can be purchased at Haddonfield Running Company or Fleet Feet.

Any of these shoes can also be purchased online, which is easy and cheap, BUT you can't try them on.  Try M+F Athletic or Eastbay or Road Runner Sports for starters.  Some have a return policy if they don't fit.

Keep in mind, this is all for runners.  Although many field athletes use running shoes (for example for high jump or long jump), some events require their own specialized shoes (shot put, etc.).
