Tim's Trot a Lesson in Community's Heart

By Keith Regan, www.holliston.patch.com

When Holliston High School Junior Max Athy needed to identify a leadership project for his National Honor Society application, his first thought was to find a way to help the Timothy O'Connell Foundation

After a summer of planning, organizing and fundraising, that thought led to this Saturday's Tim's Trot, a 3K run/walk at Holliston High School to raise funds for the foundation.

Athy's younger brother was a classmate of Timothy, who died in 2008 after a battle with acute myeloid leukemia. He had just turned 10.

Before his death, Tim had been adopted by the Panthers football team.

"Being part of the football team, we always remember the way he battled and when we think we can't dig deeper, we know we can dig 10 times deeper," said Athy, a running back/receiver and linebacker on the Panthers. "I thought this would be a good way to help the foundation out and give something back."

Tim O'Connell's battle with cancer moved many in Holliston and Max Athy was among them, said his mother, Cynthia.

"Something really hit home for him," Cynthia Athy said. "Not a day goes behind that he doesn't leave the house without least one of his Timmy bands," she added, referring to the wrist bands created in his memory.

Since being formed in 2008, the Timothy O'Connell Foundation has distributed nearly $100,000 for cancer research causes and granted $10,000 in scholarship funds to graduating HHS seniors.

Athy knew he was taking on a major task in organizing the 3K run, but got some tips on how to get started from a friend. Then, with help from Tim's mom, Joanne O'Connell and the foundation, he proceeded to raise more than $4,000 in sponsorships alone. "I'm really grateful for them allowing me to learn as much as I have about managing something like this," he said.

As of Tuesday, some 100 runners, walkers and teams had signed up to take part in the event, meaning Athy will be turning over a substantial check to the foundation.

Along with Joanne O'Connell, Athy credits his own mother with providing invaluable support, especially since school and football both resumed.

While one of the short-term goals of the project has been achieved, with Athy being accepted into the National Honor Society--"I found out this week," he said.--Athy is already thinking bigger picture and hopes to see Tim's Trot become a yearly event.

Athy said he has learned plenty about organization, fundraising and managing events, but just as much about Holliston's heart.

"It's been great to see all the heart that is out there and watch how the community comes together," he said.

The first Tim's Trot takes place on Oct. 1 at 1 p.m. Race-day registration and check-in will begin at 12:15 p.m. at noon at Holliston High School. The $25 entrance fee benefits the foundation. A registration form and additional information can be found on the Timothy O'Connell Foundation Website.

The first "Tim's Trot" a 3K road race will be held on Saturday October 1st starting at 1:00 PM at Holliston High School.  Organized by H.H.S. Junior Max Athy, a member of the football team.  The race is to benefit the Timothy O'Connell Foundation which is a 501(c)(3) not-for-profit organization, established in 2008 in honor and loving memory of Timothy O'Connell, a friend and inspiration to all and our honorary team captain.

Tim courageously battled acute myeloid leukemia between May 2007 and his death on September 9, 2008, just two days after his tenth birthday.  Tim's warm smile and his gentle loving spirit, his boundless hope and his incredible physical and emotional strength will forever live with those who were lucky enough to know him.

Tim Ties

To My Holliston Football Family:

As we are about to start our upcoming 2011 season as defending Super Bowl Champs, I am championing an effort to strengthen our “ties” to The Timothy O’Connell Foundation. As we all know, Tim is our team’s #7 and he fought a courageous battle against acute myeloid leukemia until his death on September 9, 2008, just a couple of his days after his 10th birthday. With the O’Connell Family support I will be selling red and white checkered ties that Tim had designed to our Holliston Football Family. The ties are a tax-deductible $20.00 (cash or checks payable to The Timothy O’Connell Foundation). My dad and I will have them available for purchase at the upcoming Kick-Off Cook-Out as well as throughout the season.

These ties would look great for the end of the season banquet as well as any team oriented event or just show your team’s true colors by supporting the community and Tim’s Foundation.

Thank you in advance and am looking forward seeing you and having a great season ahead.

2011 Football & Cheer Program
Dear Football Families:  The Holliston Panther Football program is excited to let you know that we will again produce a quality game program to be distributed to everyone attending home games at HHS during the Panthers' 2011 season, similar to the program produced last season. The game program will be printed and ready for distribution at the Panthers’ opening home game against Auburn HS on Friday, September 16, 2011. The program will include photos of the Varsity Football team and Girls’ Cheerleading squad, photos of team coaches and captains, rosters for all HHS football teams, and the 2011 game schedule. The cost of designing and printing the program will be covered through sale of sponsorships, and the support of football and cheerleading parents. A copy of the flyer describing program sponsorships is below this article for you to view and download. If you know of any businesses or organizations that might be interested in sponsoring the game program, please ask them to contact Jonathan Baker at jonathan.baker@worcesteracademy.org. Jonathan can also be reached on his cell at 508.735.8151. The program will also include a section for parents/families to express their support under the heading "Best Wishes For Another Great Season - GO PANTHERS!", and will list the names of FB parents who want to support the game program. For those who would like to be included in the program we are asking for a $25 contribution to help pay for the program. Please contact Jonathan Baker to let us know (1) that you want to be included in the shout-out section and (2) how you would like your name(s) listed. (A check for $25 made out to Friends of Holliston Football, it should be mailed to Friends of Holliston Football, PO Box 5816, Holliston, MA 01746.) WE NEED TO HEAR FROM YOU NO LATER THAN FRIDAY, SEPT. 2 IF YOU WANT TO BE INCLUDED!

As always, THANKS for your support!

Holliston Cheerleaders Shine at USC Elite Camp

By Sean Jacqauet, holliston.patch.com

In addition to receiving the Leadership Award, HHS cheerleaders swept the competitions, winning all three camp championships.

Holliston High Shcool's varsity cheerleaders won the leadership award at the Universal Cheerleading Associations's elite camp at Mount Ida College.

The Leadership Award recipient is selected by the cheerleading squads attending the camp on the basis of cheerleading skill, spirit, cooperativeness and friendliness.

In addition to receiving the camp's top honor, HHS cheerleaders swept the competitions, winning all three camp championships. The Panthers brought home first-place trophies in the home pom, cheer and Xtreme dance routine competitions.

Holliston competed in the elite division against 27 varsity squads from Massachusetts, New Hampshire and Canada. The Panthers also claimed numerous “superior” ribbons in their evaluations in addition to winning spirit sticks each day. The squad also won the Top Banana tradition award the first day of camp.

Three Holliston cheerleaders were named All-American cheerleaders after tryouts for the honor: senior Courtney Chester and juniors Anna Dellicker and Tori Vitali.

The members of the Holliston squad are: seniors Lina Calhoun (captain), Caity O’Toole (captain) Courtney Chester (captain), Brittney Galeaz, Carly Leonard, Emmy Jones, Syd Collari and Emma DelVecchio; juniors Rachel Kampersal, Anna Dellicker, Kristin Danner, Gabi Garvey and Tori Vitali; sophomore Leandra D’Angelo and freshmen Marisa Rose, Eaden Seavey, Melissa Swartzel, Miranda Cox, Julia Rossini, Riley McCallum and Maddie Ratcliffe.

Golf Tournament

We are gearing up for our 2011 Panther Cup Golf Tournament & Social on Friday, July 29th and we need your help.  This event is the primary fundraiser for the HHS football program that finances the basic operation of running the program yearly and also many of the things that make this program so successful and competitive for our kids every year (football equipment, Video and scouting software equipment, summer work out equipment, scholarships funds, etc to name a few).

It is an event for parents, alumni and friends of the program opening with a day of golf and then concluding with a special evening social with raffle & auction. Please see the details on the attached form.

How can you help?

·
Play golf (as a single or get a foursome)

·         Sponsor a hole (families or businesses)

·         Attend the dinner (if you are not a golfer)

·         Donate any raffle or auction item(s) or service.

·         Work with a group to put a basket together.

Anyone with a player will receive this email from  your class liaison. Please get back to them ASAP on what you can do to help. Anyone else wishing to help please contact hollistonfootball@comcast.net.  Any service or item (big or small) is welcome.  Also,  in the past many families have banded together to create a theme basket.  Perhaps you would like to just donate a few dollars towards a basket with other friends if you are busy :-).

Lastly,  Please consider participating and/or contributing to make this a special event.  The lessons and experiences our children receive from this football program go well beyond the football field and it is the generosity of the incredible families of Holliston which fuel its success and enable Coach Kiley and his staff to continue to help shape these kids each year.
