Highlanders Little League: F A Qs
Frequently Asked Questions

Who is eligible to play in the Highlanders Little League?

Boys and girls between the ages of 5 and 18 that live within the Highlanders geographical boundaries. Click  the "League Boundaries" tab on the website for a map.

If you live outside our official boundaries, you may still be able to play in HLL, but only if you are one of the scenarios below:

1) Your town does not have an Official Little League Baseball league

2) You used to live in HLL boundary and played baseball for HLL but moved and still want to play with HLL

3) You were a Manager, Coach or other Volunteer with HLL for two years, have moved, but still want to manage, coach or volunteer and still wish your child to play.

No other exceptions permitted. This is strictly enforced by Little League International.

Registration is based on residency, not school attended.

How do I register my child?

Registration is held online and in person in Dec and Jan. Click on "Registration Instructions" tab on the website for more information.

I registered, now what?

This depends on the age of your child. If your child is 5 or 6, your child will be assigned to a team in mid Feb and your coach will call you around the end of Feb. If your child is 7-12, you need to have them evaluated at the Tryouts. That info was emailed in your registration receipt, given to you at sign-ups or you can find it online under News. After tryouts, Majors and Minors coaches draft their players and then the Farms teams are assembled. Your coaches from those divisions will contact you around the third week of February. Practices begin in March.

What equipment will I need and where can I find it?

You will need to get cleats, a glove and an athletic supporter for your child. Athletic supporters are not required for Tball but recommended. We recommend the type that is like a boxer, it is more comfortable for the child. You may need additional uniform items like pants and an undershirt that will be discussed by your coach. We suggest Goetz Bros Sporting Goods on Broadway for your equipment needs. They are very helpful in selecting the right equipment for your child and sponsor our league. Tell them you are with Highlanders and get 10% off.

How do I become a coach?

All coaches are appointed by the HLL President with the help of the League Commissioner and approval of the Board of Directors. You can indicate your desire to coach during the registration process online or on the Registration form. Coaches should also fill out the Coach Application and Volunteer Application found under the "Forms and Flyers" tab on the website. Coaches are selected based on results from a background check, experience, performance in prior seasons and PCA Workshop attendence.

How do I become an umpire?

HLL utilizes both adult and youth umpires for the Minors and Majors Division games.

We have approximately 30 youth umpires ages 13-18 each season. In January/February, we recruit and train umpires. The season begins in April and runs through early June. We attempt to accommodate each youth's schedule and most games are Monday through Thursday from 5:15-7:30 pm and Saturdays from 9am-5 pm.

We send out letters in January to all 13-year-olds who played in HLL as 12-year-olds. If interested, the teens must mail back the application and a committee selects the most mature, responsible, knowledgeable kids to be umpires. Applications are also found under the "Forms and Flyers" tab on the website. We pay the kids between $20-25 per game and we expect them to treat this as a job, albeit hopefully a fun one!

If your son/daughter wishes to be considered for an umpire position and you do not receive a letter by the end of January, please email President Dan Gibson at danieljgibson@yahoo.com.

How do I find out if a game is rained out?

Your coach will call you if your game is rained out. If in doubt, show up.

When does the season start and end?

Practices begin in late February for Majors, all others start in early March; the exact date depends on the division. Games start in early April and end in early June.

For the Minor's and Major's division, your child may be chosen to play in the post season tournaments. These All-Star teams could potentially go all the way to the World Series which is in August.

Where do the teams play?

To obtain a list of all Highlanders Little League fields, click the "Locations" tab in the left sidebar. Most games are played on the fields that are within our boundaries.

How many practices and games are there in a typical week?

It depends on the division. For specifics, click on the Divisions tab.

Which divisions have tryouts?

All players league age 7-12 tryout unless you are a returning Majors division player. Tryouts examine ball safety skills and can include fielding, running and hitting skill evaluation.
