April 12, 2014 Henrico Baseball Field Dedicated in Honor of Little League Coach

Henrico Parks and Recreation dedicated the Highland Springs Little League Major League Field in memory of Reverend Robert “Bob” Spears, Jr. on Saturday afternoon. Coach Spears began working with Highland Springs Little League as a coach and manager of his two sons, Luewane and Darrell in 1979. Spears continued to coach his children until 1994 and continued coaching juniors and seniors for another 11 years after, because of his love for the game. Coach Spears returned to coaching in 2010 when his grandson, Jalen, was old enough to play ball. Spears coached for three more years until 2013, when he passed away. Coach Spears put in 30 years of service for the kids and the love of the game. Those at the memorial had only good things to say about him, including how he was a leader and had a tremendous impact in the lives of the influential youth he worked with. In 1991, Coach Spears and his Highland Springs Little League Junior All-Stars State Champions lost to Texas in Altamonte Springs, Fl., one game shy of the Little League World Series.
