Lady Cats aiming for sixth 31st District title, first region crown

By Tommie Kendall
  • On the opening day of practice Feb. 15, the Henry County softball players found themselves in an unusual spot — on the softball field.
Matt Wright, who was an assistant coach for the Lady Cats from 2006-08 and took over the head coaching position before last year, said he cannot remember a year when the players were able to actually get on the field that early, from day one, and he hopes the extra time will pay off. The weather usually plays havoc on these early-season practices, but this year has been the best in a while.

“Practice has been going well so far. The weather has been great and because of this we’ve been out more than the past,” Wright said. “We have more spacing to do things we need to work on when outside, and we’ve been able to talk about the little things that you don’t usually get the chance to talk about until you get out on the field. And we’ve been able to see live pitching earlier. I’m hoping that translates to being better prepared for these early games.”

The Lady Cats have been one of the top teams in the county the last six years, winning the 31st District championship each year since making the switch to the 31st in 2006. Last year, with Wright in charge for the first time, the Cats finished with a 23-15 record en route to winning the regular season and tournament district titles and the North Central Kentucky Conference championship, and were just one win shy of tying the school record for the most in a single season. They ended the year with a 11-5 loss to Grant County in the opening round of the 8th Region tournament.

The Lady Cats did have to fight through the injury bug last year, and are continuing to do so entering this season. It led to 14 different players starting and most of the players being juggled around to find the best lineup on the field.

Most notably, starting center-fielder Veronica Hornback was sidelined for a month with a leg injury; pitching ace Jessica Booher was unable to throw down the homestretch due to back problems; and third baseman Ally Vaughn had to watch most of the final game from the dugout after being hit by the ball on a shot down the third-base line.

Starting this year, Hornback is still struggling with her leg injury but is expected to go in the opener; Booher will not pitch these early-season games, being moved to shortstop instead; Vaughn will miss the first two weeks after she broke her finger during basketball season; Krista DeBurger hurt her shoulder during volleyball season; and Krista Rickert recently pulled a muscle during practice.

“I will say we do have one of the better teams in the region, it’s just a matter of getting us healthy and staying healthy,” Wright said.
What are the team goals this season? Winning that sixth straight 31st District title is first on the list, and reaching the 8th Region tournament finals is next. The Ladycats also picked 10 games on their schedule, against tough teams, to really focus on.

“We need to start with getting the top seed in the district tournament, so we really need to focus on these regular-season district games,” Wright said. “And we also picked 10 games against high-caliber teams that we want to focus on in the regular season as well. The main thing for us, though, is we haven’t gotten over that hump to get to the regional championship game. We want to make that move to get to state.”

Wright knows the talent is there this year to get it done.

Once all the players are back in the lineup, Taylor Cark will start at first base, Macie New at second base, Booher at shortstop, Vaughn at third base, Amanda Wilson at catcher, Shelby Frazier in left field, Hornback in center field and Rickert in right field. DeBurger will open the season in the pitcher’s circle, but Booher might eventually get there as the season progresses.

The Lady Cats opened the season at Carroll County on Tuesday night and hosts Assumption this Wednesday at 7:30 p.m.

They start out playing four district games within the first two weeks, and play in the Oldham County Spring Break Classic the weekend of April 1-2.

“We come out the gates strong with a pretty intense first couple of weeks,” Wright said. “Really, the biggest thing for us right now is trying to get healthy. If we can do that, we’ll be a very dangerous team.”
