ROONEY PARK UPDATE
During the past several years, plans have been in the works for a new Berkeley County Parks and Recreation Complex located behind the Tomahawk Ruritan Club on Tomahawk Road. With land donated by the Ruritan Club, 17 plus acres were set aside for 2 ballfields, a walking trail, a pavilion, and a fishing pond. The late Lee Rooney - a Tomahawk resident who originally sold the parcel in 1980 to the Tomahwk Ruritan Club, was a baseball fan and had hoped the land would become a park. In the fall of 2004, excavation began with the first ballfield - a 200ft Little League Baseball and Softball size field  as you see in the photo above. Hedgesville Little League also made a donation towards the new fence work that surrounds the new field and will continue to support this project in future years to come. A second baseball field is now currently under construction and will soon be finished giving our area and league 2 much needed ballfields for the 2009 season. This new facility is located 2.5 miles off Route 9 West on Back Creek Valley Road behind the Tomahawk Ruritan Club. The kids and parents of HLL would like to THANK the Tomahawk Ruritan Club, Mr. Garland "Mule" Bartgis, Mr. Fred Gantt, the Berkeley County Parks and Recreation Board, Mr. Steve Catlett, and the Berkeley County Planning
Commission for bringing this much needed park to the community of Hedgesville.

HLL IMPROVEMENTS
Over the past 25 years, our Little League has grown tremendously because of the efforts of many individuals in our league, and in our community. I have only been a board member of HLL since 2003; however, during this time I have observed many individuals put in an amazing amount of time and effort into making your league what is is today. Please visit our 2004, 2005, and (coming soon) 2006/2007improvement web sites to get a pictorial look at just a few of the improvements that has gone into HLL over the past 3 years.

If you're interested in managing or coaching a team, serving as an umpire, assistant coach, field maintenance, or anything that you can do to help our league grow, please email Nevin Kilmer at nkco5@verizon.net

Through an Umpires Eyes

Many of life's lessons are learned on a baseball field. For years, I have looked for a great example of how to explain the importance of the values that parents and coaches alike can have on our youth."Through an umpires eyes"is a touching story of how these lessons can be learned, by both parents and coaches, and also our children. Please take the time and read this entire story written by Donald Jenson. Mr Jensen was struck in the head by a thrown bat while umpiring a Little League game in Terre Haute, Indiana. He continued to work the game, but later that evening was placed in the hospital by a doctor. While being kept overnight for observation, Jensen wrote this letter.

Little League Child Protection Program
All local Little Leagues are now required to conduct background checks on Managers, Coaches, Board of Directors members and any other persons, volunteers or hired workers, who provide regular service to the league and/or have repetitive access to, or contact with, players or teams. Individuals are also required to complete and submit a Little League Volunteer Application to their local league. Select from the links below to learn more about this vital aspect of Little League’s mission.
