SHOWDOWN IN LEVITTOWN
The Hawks traveled to Levittown Sunday, October 22nd, to face the 7-1 second place Cardinals, for a 1st place showdown. The two teams lived up to the billing, as both games were decided in the last at bat of the game.
In game one, the Hawks battled back from a 4-1 deficit with Milt Tembelis pitching another solid game. The Cardinals led 4-3 heading to the 6th inning when Nick Colasurdo hit a towering double for the Hawks, to score Nick Scibelli all the way from 1st base, for a 4-4 tie. The Cards took the lead in the bottom of the 6th, but the Hawks rallied again in the 7th, as Milt Tembelis brought in Ryan Pfingst with the tying run at 5-5. But in the bottom of the 7th, with 2 out and the bases loaded, the Cards scored the winning run on a line drive hit to left field - Final, 6-5 Levittown. It was the Hawks first loss of the fall season. Doug Kraeger had 3 hits in the loss while Brian Trabulsi chipped in with 2 hits.
Game 2 was just as exciting for both teams - Alex Weingarten was on the mound for the Hawks and he brought his "A" game to the hill in this one. Alex had 10 strikeouts and allowed just 2 hits in 7 innings of work. He displayed a dazzling knuckle curve and a powerful fastball throughout the game. The only problem for the Hawks was that the Cardinal pitcher was also putting zeros on the board to match Alex. This game was scoreless after regulation and went to extra frames! Nick Colasurdo pitched two scoreless innings in the 8th and 9th. The umpires announced that the 9th inning would be the last inning due to the time limit rule. The Hawks loaded the bases with two outs in the 9th, but couldn't score the run to win it, and had to settle for a tie. Final, 0-0.

Eric Mandel had a bases loaded, 2 out, 2 run single, to cap a 5 run come from behind victory in the bottom of the 7th inning in game one. This coming after 5 walks and a Nick Scibelli blast that just missed going over the center field fence for what would have been a walk off grand slam on the 90' field at Whelan, in Malverne.
Milt Tembelis and Vin Sharky pitched well, but some untimely errors by the Hawk defense led to the Seminoles scoring 7 unearned runs.

The Hawks trailed 2-0 heading into the 4th inning when Tyler Bivona scored on a single off the bat of Nick Colasurdo to make it a 2-1 game. The Hawks tied the game 2-2 in the 5th, when Vin Sharky blasted a leadoff triple and Ryan Pfingst followed with an rbi line drive single. Meanwhile, Milt Tembelis was pitching another super game, and kept the Cardinals off the scoreboard for the final 4 innings. Milt struck out 4 and scattered 7 hits for the win. He also delivered the winning hit in the 7th inning when he doubled in Alex Weingarten who had been hit by a pitch to lead off the inning. Weingarten once again reached base 5 times in 6 plate appearances on the day.
Hawks win 3-2!
Game 2 was another thriller, as the Hawks fell behind early 3-0 in this one. The Hawks struck for 4 runs though, in the bottom of the 2nd, as Nick Scibelli powered an opposite field, bases loaded triple, to plate 3 runs. This came after Doug Kraeger was hit by a pitch to force in a run with the bases loaded. The Hawks trailed 5-4 heading into the bottom of the 5th, when with 2 out, Ryan Pfingst delivered a 2 run, bases loaded single, to put the Hawks on top, 6-5. The Cardinals tied the game in the last inning and the extra frame went scoreless.
The game was called due to the 2 hour, 15 minute time limit, Tied 6-6!
Nick Scibelli, Matt Testani and Vin Sharky all pitched well for the Hawks, on this 90 degree Fathers Day! The defense was strong all day with outstanding plays from Danny Donovan at third, a nice outfield assist from Dan Golde to nail a runner at third and smooth fielding all day from Vin Sharky at short.
Brian Trabulsi caught 5 innings in the heat in game two, and made some strong throws to slow the Cardinal running game down.

Hawks Drop Two Close Games to
Wildcats 8-7, 8-6
The 12 U Hawks resumed play in the "A" division of the NCYAA League Sunday, after an exciting tournament at Baseball Heaven last weekend.
It looked as though the Hawks would continue their winning ways when they scored three first inning runs on four walks and an Rbi single from Brian Trabulsi. But some sloppy defense behind pitcher Milt Tembelis and the Wildcats put up a five spot in their half of the first. Matt Testani knocked in two runs in the second inning to knot it at five all. The Hawks trailed 6-5 heading into the fifth inning but Tembelis banged out a two run single to put the Hawks on top 7-6. The Cats answered with two in the bottom of the inning and closed out the Hawks in the sixth, for the 8-7 win.
Game two was another see-saw battle all the way through. The Hawks trailed 7-6 heading to the last inning, with the Cats adding an insurance run in the sixth, for an 8-6 win. Doug Kraeger hit a solo Home Run in this contest, while Milt Tembelis knocked in three runs, one of his two hits a two run triple. Matt Testani had a two run single.
The Hawks look to rebound next Sunday against the Whitestone Wanderers at Newbridge Road Park in Bellmore - 1:15 PM.
12 U Hawks Split 4 Game Series At Baseball Heaven
Despite heading out to Yaphank missing two important players, Alex Weingarten, (injury), and Vin Sharky, (prior commitment), but with the addition of power hitting Nick Scibelli, the 12 U Hawks had a very successful weekend of baseball.
If the Hawks were able to turn back the clock on two innings in their first two games on Saturday, things might have turned out differently. They gave up fifteen runs in these two innings and in the other ten innings of play, they only allowed a total of four runs.
Sunday was a completely different story for the Hawks- A winning one!
Doug Kraeger's 7 inning, 5 hit, 6 strikeout performance led the Hawks over the North Babylon Bulldogs 5-4. The Hawks took an early 4-0 lead, the key hit a triple off the bat of Nick Colasurdo, but the Bulldogs tied it up and the game went to extra frames. Ryan Pfingst led off the 7th with a single, Dan Golde then laid down a perfect bunt and everyone was safe. Dan Donovan then knocked in the go ahead run. It looked as though the Hawks had taken a 6-4 lead on Matt Testani's Sac fly, but the umpire ruled that the runner left early from third base. Kraeger didn't need the extra run as he struck out the first two Bulldogs and got a game ending pop out to short for the 5-4 win!!!
Game two on Sunday was just as exciting as Matt Testani pitched a complete game, 4 hit, 6 strikeout gem. The highlight of this game was a 300' opposite field home run blast by Nick Scibelli. That was the only run in the game through 4 innings of play. The Hawks put 3 runs on the board in the 5th inning-Brian Trabulsi ripped a leadoff double into the left field corner to start the inning. Dan Golde dropped another perfect bunt to put runners on 1st and 3rd. Ryan Pfingst smacked a base hit between short and third for an rbi single. Dan Donovan reached on an error that scored a run, and Matt Testani nailed a sac fly to give the Hawks a 4-0 lead. The LI Blue Sox plated a run in their half of the 5th, but it was all Testani on the mound for the Hawks, and their 2nd victory of the day was sealed with Testani retiring the Sox 1-2-3 in the 6th. Hawks win 4-1!!!
The defensive highlight of the season came in the last inning of this game as Milt Tembelis somehow made a diving bare hand catch to retire the leadoff hitter while playing the catcher's position. Milton caught both games on Sunday on a very hot, humid day at Baseball Heaven. Great job Milt! Tyler Bivona had an outstanding weekend at shortstop and made every play look routine.
Phillip Borroni had a bases loaded diving catch on Saturday in right field to keep the Hawks in the game.
It was a great weekend of baseball- thanks to everyone!
Hawks Split Another Wild Doubleheader
The 12 U Hawks seem to love to play close and exciting games each Sunday this Spring in the NCYAA League. Sunday, May 21st, at Cherry Valley Field in Garden City was no exception.
The Hawks made 5 errors in game one that didn't help the fine 7 strikeout pitching performance of Doug Kraeger, and dropped this one by a score of 11-8.
Both Kraeger (3 hits) and Matt Testani hit Home Runs but it wasn't enough to overcome the Wildcat run production. Testani's Home Run was a 3-run blast in the 6th that made it interesting. Milt Tembelis chipped in 2 hits.
Game 2 was an extra inning affair that kept everyone on the edge of their seats and under their umbrellas for the entire game. Milt Tembelis had one of his best games ever. Milt was cruising along on the pitchers mound and the Hawks had a 1-0 lead heading into the 4th inning. That's when the Wildcats put 3 runs on the board, but the Hawks answered back with 3 of their own in the top of the 5th. Nick Colasurdo singled, Ryan Pfingst walked, Dan Donovan laid down a perfect sac bunt, Dan Golde singled in a run, Brian Trabulsi singled, and Tyler Bivona and Vin Sharky both singled in runs. Both teams put up runs in their half of the 6th and we moved to extra innings, tied 5-5.
This is when Tembelis struck with one swing of the bat. With two out and a runner on 1st, Milt crushed a high fastball over the fence to give the Hawks a 7-5 cushion heading into the bottom of the 7th.
Milt was mobbed by his teammates at home plate!!!!
The Wildcats scored a run in their half, but the Hawks win 7-6!!!!!
Tyler Bivona and Vin Sharky each had 2 hits in this contest.
The 12 U Hawks are now 6-4 in the Spring NCYAA League "A" Division. The Hawks will play next weekend in the Memorial Day Tournament at Baseball Heaven in Yaphank, NY.
4 Games guaranteed - doubleheaders on Sat. and Sun.
Playoffs on Monday-
GO HAWKS!
Hawks Split A Mothers Day Matinee With
Brooklyn Bonnies
Led by the strong five inning pitching performance of Doug Kraeger, some timely hitting, and a flawless defensive game, the Hawks beat the Bonnies 7-4 in game one of their doubleheader on Sunday. The Hawks fell behind 3-0 early in this one, but roared back with 6 runs in the first two innings, and never trailed again. The key offensive blow coming off of a 2 run double in the 2nd inning from the bat of Milt Tembelis. Vin Sharky and Doug Kraeger both chipped in with 2 hits each. The Hawks turned a couple of defensive gems as both Phil Borroni and Ryan Pfingst made run saving diving catches to keep the Bonnies off the scoresheet in the late innings.
In game two the Bonnies threw their ace starting pitcher and he kept the Hawks off the scoreboard. The Hawks were held to just three hits by the excellent pitching of Jose Sanchez. Two of those hits came in the last inning.
The Hawks are now 5-3 in the NCYAA "A" division and remain tied for 2nd.
Hawks look to bounce back next Sunday, May 21st- 1:30 PM @ Cherry Valley Field #1 in Garden City vs. the Wildcats in a doubleheader.
Hawks Hold On To Gain Split With Thrilling Nightcap Victory
The 12 U Hawks traveled up to Westbury through a maze of traffic detours, during the running of the LI Marathon, to face the Salisbury Hurricanes on Sunday 5/7 @ 1:15 PM. (The games actually began close to 2:30 PM as the umpires were an hour late in arriving. Thanks to all the families that sat at the field for what turned out to be a 6 1/2 hour day of baseball!)
The Hurricanes won game one 10-7 but the Hawks bounced back in game two and won by a score of 10-9.
The game one offense was led by Nick Colasurdo- 2 hits and 2 rbi's, Tyler Bivona- 2 hits & 3 runs and Alex Weingarten- 2 hits, including a triple. Doug Kraeger pitched 5 innings, struck out 6, but a couple of Hawk errors and some timely Hurricane hitting gave the Hawks a game one loss.
Game two was a wild one-
The Hawks came out firing on all cylinders and took an early 8-1 lead after two innings with 8 hits and 3 walks. The defense was also sharp as Dan Golde and Tyler Bivona turned a perfect 6-4-3 double play in the third. The defense was key again in the 4th as Golde snagged a rising line drive to shortstop and fired to third for another double play to end the inning! Milt Tembelis was cruising along on the mound and the Hawks took a 10-3 lead into the last inning. Milt caught the first game and was probably getting a little tired. The Hurricanes put up 6 runs and Vin Sharky was called in to pitch to the Hurricanes big cleanup hitter with the tying run just 75 feet away on third base! After an 8 pitch battle, Sharky got a pop-up and the Hawks won a wild one 10-9! The key play of this inning was a throw from Phil Borroni in right field to nail a runner at the plate with Matt Testani blocking the runner from reaching home! Doug Kraeger led the offense with 2 doubles , a triple and 3 rbi's. Vin Sharky and Dan Golde had 2 hits apiece and Milt Tembelis knocked in 2 runs to help his cause.
The Hawks are now 4-2 in the "A" division of the NCYAA 12 U league.
HAWKS SWEEP TOUGH LEVITTOWN CARDINALS!
Strong pitching, solid defense, and timely clutch hitting gave the Hawks 12 U team a two game sweep over a very good Levittown Cardinals team Sunday, by the scores of 4-3 and 10-6. Milton Tembelis pitched 4 strong innings and allowed just 1 unearned run in game one. The Hawks trailed 1-0 though heading into the 5th inning when Danny Donovan cracked a 2 run double to give the Hawks a 2-1 lead. The Cards answered back with 2 runs in the bottom of the 5th. But the Hawks never gave up, and rallied with 2 out and nobody on base in the top of the 6th. Brian Trabulsi singled and Phillip Borroni walked in front of Tyler Bivona who then smacked one down the left field line that the Cardinal outfielder couldn't make the play on, Trabulsi and Borroni scored to put the Hawks on top 4-3. Doug Kraeger was summoned out of the bullpen to close it out for the Hawks, and he did just that. Hawks win 4-3!
Game two was a close one throughout the entire game and once again the Hawks found themselves down by a run heading into the bottom of the 5th. They trailed 6-5 but put up 5 runs on 8 hits in the inning, all coming again with 2 outs! Milton Tembelis had the Hawks first Home Run of the season. Alex Weingarten had 3 hits - Trabulsi, Bivona, Tembelis, and Kraeger, had 2 hits each in the 15 hit attack. Hats off to Danny Donovan who was called on to pitch the final 2 innings after an injury to Nick Colasurdo. Danny struck out 2 and didn't allow a hit in his 2 innings of work!
Hawks win 10-6 to complete the sweep!!!
Great games today by every player!!!!
Opening Day Split with College Point Warriors
The 12 year old Valley Stream Hawks opened up the 2006 Spring season on Sunday, April 9th, in the "A" division of the NCYAA league, against a scrappy College Point Warrior team, at Seamans Neck Park in Seaford.
The Hawks won the first game of the doubleheader by a score of 9-1, behind the strong combined pitching effort from Alex Weingarten and Milton Tembelis. The duo struck out 6 and allowed 4 hits.
The Hawks played a solid defensive game and took advantage by walking 7 times and stealing 7 bases to score their 9 runs in this opening game rout!
The second game was a see-saw thriller, but unfortunately the Hawks dropped this one by a score of 8-7. The Hawks walked 11 times in the game but couldn't hold on to a late 7-6 lead as the Warriors scored 2 runs in the bottom of the 5th and held on to win it.
