Wrestle-Off Guidelines and Procedures
1 Wrestle-offs are a privilege and need to be earned. The coaches will decide who is eligible based on attendance, skill level … (beginners will practice separately and not be expected to compete for a varsity slot). 2 The coaches reserve the right to move (“bump”) wrestlers to different weight classes on the day of the match (exception basis) in order to obtain better pairings for the team as a whole. This maintains the component of wrestling as a “team” sport. 3 Wrestlers under the 100 pound weight classes should be no more than 1.0 lbs over the weight class they are challenging at the time of wrestle-offs. Wrestlers 100 lbs and over should be no more than 1.5 lbs over. Hanover wrestling does not recommend cutting weight. 4 Wrestlers will be “seeded’ according to common wrestling criteria. The Varsity wrestler after wrestle-offs will be considered the top seed for the next wrestle-off. 5 Wrestlers not attaining varsity level at their weight class may challenge up one weight class. However, if there are multiple wrestlers losing at a weight class, all may not challenge up during the same wrestle-off session. The wrestler who finished second gets preference over the rest of his weight class, and a wrestler who defeated another wrestler in that class is the next eligible. This avoids repeating wrestle-offs and conserves time to allow instruction. 6 There will be NO coaching during wrestle-offs (parents and teammates included). Parents are allowed to watch from the doorway. Coaches who are parents will be asked to stay at the opposite end of the room. Coaches will not referee or be otherwise involved in their Childs’ wrestle-off. 7 If a wrestler can not make the wrestle-offs/matches for any reason the position is open to challenge. This prevents someone from avoiding a challenge in order to keep their position. The coaches may, at their discretion, accommodate a special wrestle-off in some cases. 8 The frequency of wrestle-offs will be determined by the match schedule. Ideally, wrestle-offs will be held every other week. Due to the number matches and time it takes to complete wrestle-offs there would be no instructional time if they were done more frequently. There will be times when weeknight matches or snow/make-ups prevent wrestle-offs. This will be a coach’s decision. 9 League Tournament eligibility is determined by the number of matches wrestled and in the weight class they were wrestled. A wrestler who has won every wrestle-off may not be challenged for the tournament. A wrestler who has won the majority of the wrestle-offs will earn his tournament birth by beating his opponent in the first match of the wrestle-off. If the wrestler winning the minority of the wrestle-offs wins the first wrestle-off, it becomes a best of 3 series. A wrestler who has not won a wrestle-off is not eligible to challenge for the tournament. 10 As it is impossible to project every scenario and possibility, these aforementioned “rules” should be viewed as guidelines to treat each wrestler as fairly and objectively as possible. In the event that an unforeseen case arises, the coaches will have the final decision as to the method applied to solve the issue. Final Note – It is ultimately the wrestler’s responsibility to make the weight he challenges. Failure to make that weight causes the team to possibly forfeit that class and lose team points as well as depriving another wrestler the opportunity to compete. The coaches reserve the right to impose penalties at their discretion. Challenges should be made only at a weight class that is comfortable and healthy for each wrestler. Once again Hanover wrestling does not recommend cutting weight. The Wrestling Parent Parents in wrestling are courageous -- it's true; They feel all the pain that their boy must go through. At home, when he diets, they wish it could stop, Yet know he must do it to stay on top. Excuses for losing they will never endure, Don't blame the ref, son, because of the score. The coach, he will show you the best way to move, Keep working in practice if you want to improve. At dual meets you'll see them whispering a prayer, As their boy must compete with no one else there. Whatever the outcome, Mom cheers with deep pride, While Dad, you will notice, stands right by his side. They'll drive to a tournament; many miles away, To witness a son who's prepared for this day. Their boy, he has trained, with all of his might, Having hopes of becoming a champion tonight. But should he fall short, in his corner you'll find, A Mother and a Father, supportive and kind. They teach that through wrestling he'll learn about life, Yes, living is filled with both triumph and strife. Now if you are searching for people who care, Just look by a mat, they'll always be there. Such love for the sport is truly inherent, That's why we salute, The Wrestling Parent! author unknown |
