Bob Magee "Mr. Sparta"

Bob Magee - Club Secretary Since 1981
Bob Magee was born in Liverpool England in 1924. He was educated at the Liverpool Institute where a generation later, Beatles Paul McCartney and George Harrison also attended with John Lennon at the Liverpool School of Art next door. Bob attended the institute from 1935 until the start of World War II in 1939. Bob enlisted in the Royal Navy Fleet Air Command from January 1942 to June 1946 where he saw service in the Pacific and East Indies.

Bob became active in local amateur soccer where the standard was, like all soccer activities in the Liverpool area, abnormally high. He became a member of two teams in the Sunday morning “Pub” leagues where he learned how to “juggle” fixtures. In 1957 Britain again faced economic ruin so Bob decided to take his family to Canada for a fresh start. There was no active youth soccer club in the East End of Hamilton in the early 1950’s so Bob decided to place his two sons in the Roxborough Park Police Minor Baseball Association. During this period Bob was a player for the Brantford Ex-Imperials in the Southern Ontario Soccer League.

In 1965 along came a third son and partly to accommodate him, Bob started the East Hamilton Soccer club in 1976 with Bill Johnstone and Bill Bradley. Pele was active in New York with the Cosmos and suddenly soccer was the place to be, particularly in youth sports activities.

In 1981 the Ontario Soccer Association was told the best way to obtain government funding was for youth and senior organizations to amalgamate. Throughout these early years Bob became the first President of the revised Hamilton and District Soccer Association, a position he held for three years. During this time Bob met Dennis Zimmer the founder of Hamilton Sparta and John Bremner the first Hamilton Sparta Club Secretary. It took little persuading from them to convince Bob to change his direction and become part of the Hamilton Sparta hierarchy where he has been ever since.

Over the years Bob has become a founding member of the Ontario Soccer League (Senior) and the Ontario Youth Soccer League and served on the board of the Hamilton and District Old Timers soccer League where, in addition to his duties with Hamilton Sparta he is currently manager of Hamilton United.

This is the summary of a man dedicated to the game of soccer. Although Bob was unable to reach the heights of glory of the game he committed himself to the sport for the “Love of the Game”

John Bremnar has been a part of Hamilton Sparta since 1970, involved as a player, coach and executive director. John’s first commitment to Hamilton Sparta was as a player signing with the Senior Men’s team in 1970. In succeeding years John became the Club Vice President in 1973 then took over the role of Club Secretary from 1974 to 1981. In 1982 John again took on the role of Club Vice President until the Club’s founder Dennis Zimmer died in 1992 at which time John was elected Club President.

Before emigrating to Canada John player his youth soccer is Scotland being actively involved in the County Rep program at the Elementary and High School Levels before signing with the Postal Union in the full age amateur division. The following year John signed with the Arniston Thistle under 21 Juvenile team John’s home village. The Arniston Thistle Juvenile team went on to win the Scottish Cup in addition to 6 other major Cups over the next few years. While signed with Arniston John played 3 games with the “East of Scotland“ Rep Team followed by two years as a semi-pro before emigrating from Canada.

While in Canada John played for Sulfrga, British Imperials, Burlington United, Hamilton Apollo and finally Hamilton Sparta. A point of interest throughout John’s career, Arniston Thistle, East of Scotland and Hamilton Sparta colours were all Maroon and White.

Hamilton Sparta’s success over the years is due in part to the commitment of people like John. Thanks you for your support over the years John you will be missed. I’m sure we’ll see you throughout the summer at Mohawk Sports Park or Sackville cheering on the old Maroon and White.

With Thanks the 2003 Hamilton Sparta Executive Committee

This photo is from the 1970 Sparta Senior Men's team. The Club has come a long way over the past 30 years. Some of the players are still involved in active Club work. If you look closely YOU WILL recognize some of the players. I will try and find the names of all the players and post them on our Web Site. One player I do know is in the front row third from the right, our current Club Vice President John Bremner. Reported by Dave Edgcumbe

Many of these original team members are still activly involved in the Sparta organization today. Take a look the pictures they may bring back a few memories. We will try to feature these members on our Club page from time to time. As usual send your comments to the Club WebMaster or post them on our message board.
