Hanging next to door No. 13 behind Moore Traditional High School on Outer Loop, a nondescript sign points to "Wrestling Sign-ups."
On Wednesday and Thursday evenings, a dozen or so middle and high school wrestlers train inside, surrounded by banners and photos showcasing Moore's 30-plus year wrestling history.
Most of them, however, aren't Moore students.
Mike Thomas, Moore's wrestling coach, opens his Horsepower Wrestling Club each spring to any youth wrestler. "The main goal is to get my guys off-season work from coaches other than myself," said Thomas, who uses volunteer wrestling coaches to help run the club. "But it will also help Jefferson County out a little bit -- get the younger kids involved."
Thomas, a wrestler himself who graduated from Moore in 1998, said he hopes the influx of wrestlers of elementary, middle and high school ages from other schools in the city will help build a better foundation for the sport in Louisville. Because Moore is a grade 6-12 traditional school, it has the only true middle school wrestling team in Louisville, Thomas said.
Right now, he's got wrestlers coming in from eight other schools, including Fern Creek, Manual, Southern, Valley and Fairdale High Schools. He's also hoping to draw middle and elementary school athletes interested in wrestling, something that would increase the city's high school experience level as the younger group grows up.
"We're just trying to get the word out about wrestling," said Zack Michael, a ninth-grader at Moore who has wrestled for three years.
Manual freshman Travis Terranova, who lives in Okolona, has been heading straight from football practice to the Horsepower club on some afternoons this spring. His father, Matt Terranova, wrestled at Moore in the late 1970s.
"It's a fun sport," Matt Terranova said. "When most kids get introduced to it, they stick to it. It's an individual sport that they can exceed at."
Thomas Hall started going to Horsepower in March. He said he didn't know anything about wrestling when he walked into the gym, which sports a sign that reads, "No medals for practice, no medals without."
"It's been fun though," said Thomas, an eighth-grader at Iroquois Middle School. "We've learned the basics and techniques."

The Horsepower Wrestling Club is about teaching wrestling to as many youth as possible so we decided to reward members a refund based on referring new members to sign-up. For every member that signs-up and list you as the person that referred them, you get $5.00 back off membership. There is no limit. If you so happen to get 9 members to sign-up then you get all your money back. Members, persuade your peers and classmates to sign-up. Parents, persuade your kids to get their peers and classmates to sign-up. You will save money. That is always good.
We accept donations from companies, businesses, and personal donations. If you donate from a company or business we will put you on our sponsor link. Please donate and help us establish our wrestling club. Click here to donate online.
