Welcome to the 2007 Horsepower wrestling club. The Horsepower Wrestling Club was started in 2002 to expose the sport of wrestling to the Highview, Okolona, and surrounding areas in Louisville Kentucky. The club gives those who haven't entered high school a chance to learn and competively wrestle. It also gives high school wrestlers a chance for off-season practice and competition. The club is for youths aged 6-18.

- Sign-ups are on February 28th and March 1st from 6:00pm to 8:00pm at Moore Traditional School around the back side of the building by the garages in door 13. Wrestlers under 18 should bring a parent to sign-ups. If you miss sign-ups you can sign up at any practice on Wednesdays and Thursdays. SIGNUPS LAST ALL SEASON LONG.

- Practices are on Wednedays and Thursdays at 6:00pm to 7:00pm(K - 8th) and 7:00pm to 8:15pm(9th-12th)in the wrestling room (door 13)starting on Wednesday March 7th. The club runs until May 17th and then trims down to open mat hours throughout the summer. For more information contact Mike Thomas at (502)749-2515.

Hanging next to door No. 13 behind Moore Traditional High School on Outer Loop, a nondescript sign points to "Wrestling Sign-ups."

On Wednesday and Thursday evenings, a dozen or so middle and high school wrestlers train inside, surrounded by banners and photos showcasing Moore's 30-plus year wrestling history.

Most of them, however, aren't Moore students.

Mike Thomas, Moore's wrestling coach, opens his Horsepower Wrestling Club each spring to any youth wrestler. "The main goal is to get my guys off-season work from coaches other than myself," said Thomas, who uses volunteer wrestling coaches to help run the club. "But it will also help Jefferson County out a little bit -- get the younger kids involved."

Thomas, a wrestler himself who graduated from Moore in 1998, said he hopes the influx of wrestlers of elementary, middle and high school ages from other schools in the city will help build a better foundation for the sport in Louisville. Because Moore is a grade 6-12 traditional school, it has the only true middle school wrestling team in Louisville, Thomas said.

Right now, he's got wrestlers coming in from eight other schools, including Fern Creek, Manual, Southern, Valley and Fairdale High Schools. He's also hoping to draw middle and elementary school athletes interested in wrestling, something that would increase the city's high school experience level as the younger group grows up.

"We're just trying to get the word out about wrestling," said Zack Michael, a ninth-grader at Moore who has wrestled for three years.

Manual freshman Travis Terranova, who lives in Okolona, has been heading straight from football practice to the Horsepower club on some afternoons this spring. His father, Matt Terranova, wrestled at Moore in the late 1970s.

"It's a fun sport," Matt Terranova said. "When most kids get introduced to it, they stick to it. It's an individual sport that they can exceed at."

Thomas Hall started going to Horsepower in March. He said he didn't know anything about wrestling when he walked into the gym, which sports a sign that reads, "No medals for practice, no medals without."

"It's been fun though," said Thomas, an eighth-grader at Iroquois Middle School. "We've learned the basics and techniques."
